Please don't listen to anyone telling you this isn't rock music. There are many subgenres of rock music, this is one of them. Some people are just snobby about it. This whole album is really good and is a concept album around the main character dying from cancer.

It’s also inspired by 9/11 - the leader singer witnessed it

@@Rbb0828 Slight correction; this song isn't specifically inspired by 9/11, but the forming of MCR as a whole was. Gerard Way was working as a graphic designer just across the Hudson from NYC, and so saw the attacks first-hand. MCR was how he and his band-mates sought to channel their anger and despair over that terrible hate and violence into something positive. Way, being a comic-book nerd from way back, continued his writing and illustrating, creating the comic "Doom Patrol" that was turned into an excellent TV series not too long ago (still waiting on the next season, guys!). The show also served as something of a launch-pad for Brendan Fraser's renewed acting career, pre-"The Whale".

I always kinda liked this song, but 7 years ago I went to visit my dad in the hospital and we learned he had advanced liver cancer. When I got in my truck to leave I turned on the radio and this song started, like insane perfect timing. My dad died three days later at home and this song gets to me every time I hear now. Love it and miss you Pops!

I didn’t fully understand this song, arguably this entire album, until my mother got breast cancer. I’d always loved this song, but I connected more to the lyrics of other MCR songs. But after her diagnosis, everything suddenly clicked.

One thing many people miss in this video... I did too for a long time... In the beginning, when the patient is dying. The nurses are there, but no loved ones... No family. The album that this song is from (The Black Parade) is a concept album. Every song in the album tells a part of the story of the patient coming to terms with his imminent death from cancer. Through the songs you learn why he is alone at the end. In this song, he is at the point where he finally accepts his fate. As he crosses over, Death comes to greet him in the form of his favorite memory. That of a parade he saw with his father. In this parade he is finally joined by other souls and is no longer alone. Then Death tells him that... Although his life wasn't perfect... It was a life worth being remembered. And his memory will live on. Admittedly I may not be 100% on point with it all... But from what I have gathered from listening to the album quite a few times and from interviews I have heard with the band... I think I am pretty close. As for those who say it isn't rock?!... Well it is a sub genre and it isn't for everybody. Emo... Or maybe Emo Rock... I am actually a good bit older than most people into this kind of music (born in 1970) and only discovered this band a few years ago... But this band... More specifically this album.. is among some of the greatest stuff out there in my opinion.

Wonderful . My English is not so good, but I'm early 70s child also and got the same conclusions . Intensely loving MCR since 2006 and apparently will never stop. Very good comment you did, had to respond.

Born 1967 and started listening to MCR a few years ago. It definitely carries meaning for people long past their teens and 20s. Most recently, I've been working to put in place more of the kinds of things that will help prevent my life from becoming, as another song on this album puts it, "a lifelong wait for a hospital stay."

🖤 love you steph n jay!! This was a big song when I was in High school in the UK and people were bullied for being "emo, mosher, goth" or anyone who felt they didn't fit in. We took pride in being different. It's sort of our fed up anthem 🤣

I find it fascinating how many people default to this is a song about dying happy and without regrets. That is a common hopeful message but that isn't what this is about. This is about a person who struggled through life, made poor decisions, turned their back on loved ones and hated the world for their cancer. This song is about accepting their death even though they still want to live. It's about their most precious childhood memory of going to see a matching band and that becoming an allegory for death, then the voice of death reassuring them that their memory will carry on, and even while they're accepting these words they still scream I don't care showing their struggles to accept death. At least that's what I think.
