Mikey (the bassist) is Gerard's younger brother, it really hits when you can see Gee scream his name when he gets shot. Also, if you do The Black Parade, Mikey has a medal on his jacket for dying in action...

The story of the song itself is kind of hard to explain on its own. The album that it comes from, "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge," is a concept album, and it ties into the narrative of the album. Gerard Way, the singer of MCR, is also a fantastic writer with several comic books to his credits. "Three Cheers" is of "the story of a man and a woman who are separated by death in a gunfight and he goes to hell only to realize by the devil telling him that she's still alive. The devil says he can be with her again if he brings the devil the souls of a thousand evil men and the man agrees to do it, and so the devil hands him a gun" (from an interview with singer Gerard Way). The couple, "the Demolition Lovers," are kind of a Bonnie and Clyde type duo (the last song off of their first album is about them.) At this point in the album, the man is already knee-deep in killing and starting to lose hope in completing this mission to see his love again. This song is about him feeling sorrowful for not being there for her and for starting to regret taking on what seems like an impossible task.

yea this is the point in the album where the man starts thinking that maybe he's killed enough people as penance and doesnt need to complete the whole list, and its kind of a duet where in the chorus the woman is singing to him and the "could i, should i" is him considering suicide

The song is not actually about war or anything, but rather about loss and dealing with things associated. Their first two mainstream albums, and especially “The Black Parade”, are filled with themes of that subject and the mental health issues that can be caused by them. This band helped a TON of people get through things. Myself included. If you haven’t already, you should check out “Famous Last Words”. It is not as heavy on the themes, but is an absolute unit in terms of energy. Great “feel good” song. Love what you do, Van! 🙏

As a firefighter/paramedic, I have had terrible nightmares of having to pull my family out of fires, and my pets. The dreams some times are way too realistic. You can literally feel the heat on every square inch of your body and you can feel the weight of your equipment. Or you can dream of dismembered people we pull out of car crashes. Too vivid, you can smell the burned engine oil, and melted plastic.

Paramedic here as well. I've had coworkers commit suicide from trying to deal with what they've seen. I just realized I distance myself from people so I don't get too attached. It must be how I cope with all the horrible stuff I've seen. PTSD is severely under diagnosed in EMS, every day is a war zone. This song always destroys me

I never got into MCR at all, I kinda liked their song Helena, but that’s about it. Never saw a show, never bought an album, never streamed a song… but I happened to come across this one one day and it really hit me. The video, the song, the meaning behind it, just wow. It’s about the loss of a loved one. The video, portraying sort of themes of storming the beaches of Normandy, was likely one of the biggest sources of exploring that devastation people had to deal with. It’s sort of a beautiful romance between a handsome young soldier and his sweet blushing girl. Then it’s mixed with scenes of these kids, many of whom barely 19 or 20 years old rushing full on into machine gun fire. Another scene shows the singer comforting his brother at the bar whom likely just heard the news of a death and is drinking his sorrows down. The girl in the video, the last time you see her she seems to have terror in her face as if it’s the last time she’ll see her lover. The band playing are fading away into a blur, a distant memory in the end… Then the lyric You’re never coming home All the things you never told me All the smiles that are gonna haunt me Never coming home I just think this is about the loss of a loved one all together. From the man’s perspective, he loses her in dying memories in his last moments on that battle field all the same.
@sp0ngeb00b7
@sp0ngeb00b7 2 жыл бұрын
I know this comment is a month old but if you look, the singer's brother who he is comforting at the bar is the man who dies on the field, which is interchanged between shots of the guitarist (medic) trying to patch his wounds and the singer screaming for his brother, before holding the final shot of the singer's eyes, dissociating from the situation in the shock and pain of grief. This music video is one of the most expensive rock videos ever filmed, I have no idea who decided to put the faith in them for this budget, but those awesome transition shots and costumes wouldn't have worked with the efforts of any other band, because Gerard and co are just true artists and their performances here are what seals the deal. If you haven't gone on to check out any of their other music, I highly suggest listening to the album this song and Helena are on front to back :) Or if you're less into the chaotic punk sound, The Black Parade is widely regarded their magnum opus

For a lot of my friends who grew up as military brats, including myself, this song hit so hard. I was 10 when 9/11 happened and we all had multiple experiences of watching one or both of our parents leave to go to the East. When this song dropped, my ex-wife's father was on his first, of four, deployments to Iraq. My parents went to the Middle East two times each.

Your comments about mental health are especially sweet and respectable, I am not a vet or family of anyone serving or previously part of the military but, mental illness affects billions of us and things like neurodivergence (autism, adhd) can add so much more to the plate. On the subject of the consequences of war, PTSD is also something people can acquire from trauma outside the world of the battlefield, in so called "every day life", but is dismissed due to its heavy association with the military and our surviving soldiers. So, I'm not sure in what way you're acquiring information about mental illness and the human psyche, but it is incredible to hear of someone willing to learn about these very personal issues for the benefit of those around them and those they may encounter in life. Thank you for being a spectacular person, and have a fantabulous weekend :) 💞

I’ve always taken “Can I? Should I?” To be a response to PTSD. CAN you come home from trauma? If you have survivor’s guilt, SHOULD you let go and return to “normal life”? Your mental health shout-out is awesome-yes, you can and should “come home.” Fight your battle and your demons to stay sane and well. Great response.

My interpretation is based on the lyrics synchronized with the music video. The song itself is about loss in general. But I think when he says "she" its in a narrative perspective. This woman losing her love to war. The first 2 verses say "I never said I'd lie and wait forever. If I died we'd be together now" indicating that she is dwelling on the memory of her lover and how she misses him and how if she died they would be together and this pain and longing would vanish. Then in the chorus he sings "could I? Should I?" Which in my interpretation, meaning that she is contemplating suicide. Suicide has connotations to being a sin. So could I commit this act and should I commit this act if it meant seeing my love sooner or will it just damn me to Hell and I never see him again; Even in death. I also can see the chorus being about his friend witnessing his friend being killed in battle. That being the last thing he sees is his friend never coming home after the war. And the verse that goes "at the top of my lungs in my arms, she dies, she dies" is the soldier who lived and had to come home and tell his friends girl that he didnt survive, and she breaking down in his arms from hearing the tragic news and both embracing each othwr whilst weeping in pain for both of their huge loss

The video is aaaaawesome, but also like a different story from the actual song,though heavily connected and it sounded like you got that part. 7:45 that point was it, not to be preachy to anyone and if you choose not to serve, that’s your prerogative and is totally fine, especially at a time without draft, when it is totally voluntary, not everyone should serve, as it isn’t for everyone. Hell it may not even be for some who do choose to volunteer. But to my point, especially for those of us who deploy, some of us get off easy and never see a day of violence, but some of us don’t, some of us had to, or will have to experience an absolute violence, get wounded, or worse a friend gets wounded or killed, and we’ll live with that, and, some better than others, learn to deal with it, but it takes time. It takes talking, even. I found it, comforting, I guess, to talk amongst fellow veterans, hear their stories and share mine. Talking is the very first step to resolving mental anguish. It hurts, and you may hate it, but get it off your chest or it will eat you. To anyone who’s served and had to experience the darker sides of battle, or the aftermath, talk it out. Find a friend, contact a buddy, do yourself the favor and work it off. Don’t bottle it.

The thing about Gerard Way's lyric writing that needs to be understood is that they jumps around in perspective constantly. "You're never coming home, never coming home" is the mourning, alive lover of the dead woman, and "could I, should I" is the dead woman (in my interpretation at least). This song also fits into the whole motif of the entire album in that the alive lover is mourning the dead woman throughout this whole song. Throughout the album a story is told. It's a loose rock opera. Basically a Bonnie and Clyde like duo gets into a gunfight with cops. The "Bonnie" of this duo dies, and a Devil tells the "Clyde" that he can bring his "Bonnie" back from death by killing 1,000 evil souls. Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge is the rock opera telling this tale, and that is the album that this song comes from. The closest thing that I have to compare this kind of story telling to, at the tender age of 32, is American Idiot by Green Day. Green Day went 100 times more literal then MCR did when it came to their story telling though. You've got to read between the lines and listen to each song in order to get the whole story when MCR makes a rock opera, which is three and 1/11 out of four of their studio albums. I say 1/11 because the last song on their first album, Demolition Lovers, was a prelude to the "story" that was being told throughout Cheers. There's also the fact that a lot of this album was inspired by the grief that Mikey and Gerard and the rest of the band felt about Gerard and Mikey's grandmother's death.

This music video cost about as much per day to film as the Omaha Beach scene in Saving Private Ryan did. 1 million for a 2 day shoot vs 12 million for 4 weeks.

stemming away from the album concept and more towards the war meaning behind this song, i think the "could i should i" could be if he wants to go home after the war. he wont be the same, and many spouses of veterans say theyre partners never really returned so it could be about that. like if its worth putting them thru that

The thing with this music video is that the roles are kinda reversed, and that the lyrics aren't really that much like the actual video. To understand the lyrics you have to kinda know the whole story behind three cheers for sweet revenge. Because in the video it is those who go to war that die but the lyrics arent even about war, theyre about a guy who lost his love and is trying to get her back. The story and the lyrics to all the songs on the album is really awasome and deep and i think you should totally search the story upp and try to piece together the lyrics.

I used to see them play to a room of 100-200 what seemed like every other weekend. We used to have a great venue in Poughkeepsie, NY. It was called The Chance. It was probably only 1.5 hours from where MCR were from so they were constantly playing there. I remember one show there was maybe 25 people tops. Nobody knew who they were. But then I was also lucky enough to see them play festivals like Warped and Taste of Chaos and Bamboozle where in some of those instances, probably had 50K people singing along to them.

Hell yes, y'all! I got to see them in '04 with The Used. Definitely less than 100 people there at a small venue. They blew my mind and I'm still a fan to this day. ❤️

I understand the people saying this song has nothing to do with war. But at the same time, they did the video like this for a reason so that people can relate as well. And if not, all songs are made for you to take and relate how ever you want to. No right or wrong. On another note, my brother struggles with that very thing you mention. Not only losing his friends over seas, but he also feels guilty. Like why did HE make and they didn't? Alcohol is taking him and it's tough.

Technically the part when he says "Could I? Should I?" is connected to the phrase "Ever coming home" so it should turn out like this: "Could I ever come home? Should I ever come home?" Because after all he has seen he doesn't know if he's fit to live like he used to do before.
