That's better known as perimeter (from the center you have 8 chunks = 128 blocks where no mobs can spawn), and it's possible to do it in something like 10 hours using TNT dupers.

I've mined a chunk twice. Once with a friend in a 100x 100x survival but I did most of the work. Another time in survival with a few friends but I did 70% of the work. Very fun.

Yeah, I can't say I've ever done it without diamond tools and my absolute largest single hole was done in modded with a quarry but I have done a lot of chunk destroying by hand. And not just chunks, but generally mines. My current main world has an approximately 600K block mine dug out from 21 to bedrock originally. The central part of which, which is a little over four chunks by four chunks, was extended to -16 afterwards to accommodate more structure. At which point I learned that their conversion of bedrock to deep slate did not work correctly everywhere because the new area that I dug down happened to have some bedrock in the wall right where I was going to stop anyway. This world also has a quadruple slime chunk farm so it's about four and a half chunks wide each way which was dug down from about 65 to bedrock. And behind that is another lore based build connected to the farm. That area behind it was a little hillier, so the digging started somewhere around 75, and it goes straight down to current bedrock being almost five chunks wide in both directions. I did use a little bit of moss in this section, but not that much, because I was only looking to fill up eight barrels in my storage and it just so happened to be that the new sub-bedrock generation was a lush cave in this area.
