I think there are enough food items, but in Minecraft status effects are such a sadly-underused mechanic. This presents a clever way for those basic items to give multiple effects in unlimited combinations. And this game is all about combining basic elements in creative ways!

The hunger system is too basic, to the point that only golden carrots and cooked pork/steak are good food options. Everything else just becomes early game food or filler.

This is super super cool I really love this idea and I want to try and make some suggestions that I think would really bring some depth to this; The fact that the output is completely randomly decided while fun and gives reason to the recipes, will probably make the player feel disconnected from the cooking and not really care all that much with experimenting, especially that you put three whole ingredients in and get one out, but with the recipes being so rare without the guarantee of it actually being something really useful i can see putting off people who want control over what they make I would like to suggest maybe, as a way to introduce more player agency and better implement the creativity of making a new meal is giving you options on how to prepare your ingredients, which in turn decides which ambient effects, activated effects and effect criteria are prioritised when they are put into the cooking pot. For example, mashing an ingredient (using a tool like a shovel with it) would make the ingredients ambient effect take priority when put into the pot, whereas chopping an ingredient (using a tool like an axe or a sword) would make the activated effect take priority. This would introduce some depth, where you can selectively choose which ingredients to prioritise to learn which ingredients give what effects in which situations, and much further incentivise exploring and experimenting with this feature as the player has control over it. I think maybe after cooking a meal, you would have to first recreate it once more to get it into the cooking pot, and then once you've remade it you can use some sort of craftable or lootable empty recipe page on the pot to write the recipe down which removes the requirement of preparing the ingredients so you can easily remake your useful meals you've spent so much effort into mastering to perfection. With these changes the lootable and tradable recipes would absolutely have to be buffed, as getting villagers to max trade level is not at all easy and you cant change the trade once you've gotten them to max level so there should be a guarantee its something worth your effort. I think when you prepare an ingredient it should also give you more items from that process which cant be eaten on their own for very much at all but still counts as one item in the cooking pot, reducing the cost of making them as using a whole 3 food items for one meal would probably put players off from using their food on it, especially since food is really valuable if you're playing on anything higher than easy. Hope you consider my suggestions!! Otherwise I really love this and can't wait to get my hands on it because I agree cooking really needs some improvements!!! P.S: I forgot to mention I think introducing the empty recipe pages should include a recipe book you can put all your created and found recipes into and select them and use them on the pot rather than cluttering chests and your inventory full of them, especially since they don't stack!

You should make an addition called "The Void Pot", and you would need 4 pot shards, 3 void blocks, 1 void, and 1 cake. Void ore would be a rare ore found on the bottom side of the end islands, and you would get a void shard. you craft 9 void shards together to get a void crystal, but if you are lucky you could find a void cluster that would give you a void crystal instead of a shard. Shards could be found in end cities as rare loot. You would craft 9 crystals together to get a void block. To craft a void, you would have to find a void core which is an extremely rare item in an end city chest, and you would surround it with void crystals to get a void. The pot just holds and infinate anount of things in it and if you right click it it will show you what and how much of something is in it. The pot would look like it has a black hole in it.

God damnit. This is exactly the main idea behind the modpack ive been working on for a few months now. Certain structures would give you recipies for both technology AND foods you can make with the new tech. There was an entire idea of finding interactions between foods and mods to complete automation goals to get to the nether, aether, and end. Eventually youd find a "fever dream" of infinite creation and a "black pit" of endless destruction that youd need to use together to complete the pack and get home. Even down to lifting the mechanic from Qud, HECK. Guess that idea might be gone now :
