Hey Courtney I want you to notice how excited our soldiers are because they’re able to show the public what they can do and they were very excited to let him on the airplane and show them the process of what they do how many other countries would allow their civilians to get on their planes and do exactly what he did you know if you can pass a background check you can go on that same plane and do exactly what he did

Sam is no longer at Langley, and his assignment with the demo team has long been over. He is now a deputy PAO at Scott AFB. His commitment in the USAF will be done in less than a year. Whether or not he stays longer is up to him. I think since he shoots his videos as if he were a civilian he may make his exit into full time creation. His videos are quite good. I thank him for his service, and can't wait to see more.

I THINK I heard you ask what AC stood for (though I could be wrong...that part was hard for me to hear). If I DID hear correct... The C in C-130 stands for "cargo." This is an AC-130, which adds the A for "attack."

Different variants of the AC 130 are equipped with different weapon systems. Some have Gatling guns of different calibers, bofor guns, and 105 mm howitzer. The Bofor guns design go back to World War II . Commonly seen shooting down kamikaze’s from Allied ships.

One thing they didn't mention was the lack of Oxygen. You've have about 87% of the Oxygen at 10,000 feet (~3,048m) above Sea Level than you have at Sea Level. Doesn't sound like a lot, but if you're doing things like lifting 50 pound objects and turning around as you take a few steps, it really does change your performance!

I thought was less than that...guess also depends on altitude/Temps...never thought of that but since those guys are not going full 8th AirFroce WWII style....having to hang out openings in the side of the B-24, B-17s firing 50cals @ 18K-20K ft...non-pressurized...Temps -40 'F to -50'F....most lose their oxygen bc of the hectiness when attacked...I couldn't imagine...but these are at least semi pressurized if not fully pressurized...even so, they could not pump in 100% O2 due to simple static "electricity" from rubbing gloves together would cause an immediate combustion....Now I have to do research...Thanks...

From June 1972 to June 1973, I worked on the LORAN navigation systems of the first generation of these (AC130As) in Ubon, RTAFB (Thailand). When they loaded the 105mm shells onto the aircraft, the truck with the ammo pulled up to the aircraft and then TOSSED the 105mm shells from the truck into the plane where they were caught and put in those racks like tossing 10-pound canned hams around. Scared the crap out of me knowing about the primer and one accident and it's over.

I had the opportunity to see the SR-71 Blackbird today and meet a pilot. As a Marine myself, I just interrupted the fanboy questions with an extended hand and a thank you…. He was taken aback, he asked me about my service, but a man with balls of steel big enough to fly at those speeds under that danger, he has all my respect of how spooky the missions were. I love that you are so passionate about US Military and knowing you chose a Marine, how can you be unlikable. I love your patriotism for the US. Semper Fi!!!

I find the development of military technology like this fascinating. I used to play a TTRPG called Traveller, which was a science fiction game set in the future. Among its included charts I found interesting were timelines predicting the development of different technologies, including weapons. Some of them we've already surpassed. Some like mass drivers and lasers, we are developing now. Who knows what we'll have ten years down the line?

Check out the HIMARS/MLRS videos to see precision strikes that includes radar and Surface to Air defense systems that allows our planes to fly unchallenged. It’s a weapon system I’ve worked with and one that’s proving vital in Ukraine, especially since they don’t have a strong Air Force. Artillery is still King of Battle.

I crewed on A, E/H- model AC-130's, and they were night/day different from the J-model. Earlier 'ships had more weapons, but were on fixed mounts, and the P.I.C. (Pilot In Command) aimed them using a heads-up display on the L.H. side cockpit windows, and fired them. The "weapons systems officers" (fire control officers, when I was in) located targets on the ground, and lit the H.U.D. for the pilot. Also, we had as many as 7 weapons on board, - and occasionally racks on the wings, though that configuration changed over the years. Originally, there were 4 gatling guns (two .30 caliber, and two 20mm), 2 40mm Bofors guns, which had a variable rate of fire, and a 75mm gun in the rear door, which eventually became a 105mm gun, and was moved to the port side in later models. The U-model was just a testbed when I was in, and its basis was a A-model that had been modified to what we really wanted - guns on trainable mounts - but we couldn't get the systems to work right at the time (1980's). Nice to hear that the 105 only pushes the aircraft 6 feet these days: when it was first moved to the port side, it pushed the aircraft 90 feet!!! Needless to say, they've dramatically improved the buffer system. I started to feel old when my H-model was retired, and I REALLY started feeling old when they began retiring the U-model 'ships just a few years ago - they were only an idea when I was in, and they had the shortest service life of all the 'ships, so I guess, now they have a much better budget for the program! (Really, the guns tend to rattle the airframes apart, and the aircraft undergo a LOT of maintenance, as a result)

Thanks for that information. I thought I lost a couple more brain cells. I went to an air show several years ago and the Air Force had a gunship parked for display. You could walk in check out the guns and the cockpit. I was doubting my memory (I've reached that age milestone) I swore I put my hand on a Gat, a 40 and the 105. Then i watched this video. So thanks for commenting or I would have up my meds. And thanks for serving.

@@eddiehaskell1957 Not a problem. The aircraft you saw was a U-model gunship, the first to have only 3 weapons on board. They have two models in service now, the J-model, and the W-model: the latter is mainly a short-range anti-bunker missile platform, though in order to still be considered a gunship, it does still have a few weapons on board! (The original concept was to not have any - then, many of us asked "Why call it a gunship if it has no guns?") Again, I was kind of shocked when I heard the U-model (or, "U-Boat", as we called them) began to be retired a few years ago: A and E-models entered service during Vietnam, and the A-models were retired about 4-5 years after Desert Storm, while the E/H-models were just retired within the past 5 years...they began their lives as gunships in 1970. (They started as E-models, and were upgraded to H-models) Fun fact: the first A-model gunship was named "The First Lady": I didn't find out until 10 years ago, or so, that "The First Lady" was also the very first C-130 built! She was the actual prototype aircraft, the first of many, and when she went into active service, Lockheed replaced the prototype nose, with a standard production nose, so, many of us never knew! Fun fact#2: Air Force Special Operations is/was (dunno how they are now...) a different bunch, compared to the rest of the Air Force. It's commanders run it with a different style. Hard to explain, but once you're assigned to that unit (now - those units!), you tend to not want to leave. We had one Sgt., that became a crewmember on one 'ship as it entered service in '69/'70, liked the work so much, he remained a crewmember on that same aircraft throughout his career, and didn't retire until the aircraft was retired! Fun fact #3: before AFSOC came into existence as a command in the USAF, it was part of TAC (Tactical Air Command), back during the Cold War days of SAC, TAC, and MAC. During that time, the aircraft wore various camouflage patterns/colors, based on what operations were being conducted, and were the aircraft were being deployed. The standard gray used today works great, but to me, it just looks a little too "standard". As for my service, I had fun!

This is the newer version of this aircraft, as opposed to the Angel of Death. The older version had a gatling gun, autocannon and howitzer, this is minus the gatling gun, presumably because it is unnecessary given the two larger guns. This is great advertising for young people to volunteer for the USAF ;-) Over the decades, my family has been USA, USN, USMC and USAF.

The C130, the basis fir the AC130, has been in service since 1954. Over the last 6 plus decades it has been overhauled numerous times to keep it in service. To the best of my knowledge the only other plane to fly longer is the B52, it's been in service since 1950. With planned upgrades they expect it to remain in service until 2050.

I like the video for the a130 because he had guns on both sides with sensors on both sides of the aircraft and it featured Gatling guns also With twice the weapons weight Wise you going to carry less ammunition and you going to use more fuel so you going to be on location for a shorter duration of time even if you carry reserve fuel tanks. I was very surprised not to see a Gatling gun on the j130.

I then said as we were walking off the plane " let's ask this young lady...can my granddaughter fly a plane like this? She doesn't think she can because she is a girl" the luitnetant replied " as long as you study hard and keep good grades you can fly a plane just like this. Do you know how I know?" My granddaughter shook her her head the luitnetant replied " I know this because this is my plane...I fly it all the time it goes nowhere without me flying it". My granddaughter `s eyes got real big and she said " one day I am going to fly a plane". And she did she was accepted into a special after school course about planes and math and at the end of the course those that graduated was invited out to the airport to fly a Cessna with a pilot but mostly the kids did the flying including l the plane and taxing to a complete stop. I took her to the air show she was about 6 yrs old...she flew the plane in 6th grade.

This is the best support ground troops can get. Sadly it's got denied use in devastatingly US losses. Politicians never make good battle leaders.

The GAU--23 fires 2100 rounds per minutes not 200. 200 RPM would be very slow.
