My son was in Iraq in 2008, and wasn't in a situation that needed the A-10, but he did see it in action less than a mile away from his base. Some of his fellow soldiers were actually being pinned down by sniper fire coming from a building that they were going past. So they called in air support and the A-10 came in and destroyed the building completely. 3 passes by the A-10, 2 using the cannon and 1 for a rocket that blew the building to hell!

@@vjetar2822 I could ALMOST buy into your oil angle ... except that the West didn't much bother Iraq until it invaded Kuwait ... and now the West is deeply involved in Ukraine ... because it too was invaded ... and Ukraine doesn't have oil (does it?) or poppies for that matter. So there seems to be something to the claim of protecting the Territorial Sovereignty of Nations, regardless of whether or not they have oil (or poppies!). The poppies are in Afghanistan ... and any Country which is dumb enough to shelter Terrorists who were foolish enough to attack The U.S. on 9-11 deserves 20 years of U.S. Military occupation as punishment. That said, you have a point about the money. There's boat-loads of money being made from those opium poppies ... and where is the money going??? Now that the U.S. Military is no longer there ... or the Russians before them ... or the English before them ... where will all of that money go? There's a high probability it will once again go towards funding Islamic terrorists ... which will (also once again) give some bigger, stronger Country a legitimate excuse to move in and take over ... again! Who will it be this time? Is it China's turn??? This cycle of occupation by other Countries almost leads one to think that all of that opium is keeping the Afghanis from learning how to get along with the rest of the World. Trust me, Americans have no desire to be in Afghanistan. It's a shit-hole. A shit-hole which could be a paradise if they spent their opium money sensibly! The best hope for the rest of the World is that they keep fighting amongst themselves and leave the rest of the World alone. They can't even get along with each other! No wonder other Countries keep moving in and setting up shop!

I was a combat engineer in the U.S. Army and we trained with these plains to fight USSR in the 1980s. These planes would fly so close to the ground so fast that by the time you finally hear them they were already passed you. They used to drop 500-pound bombs and shoot the cannon just over the ridgeline for training. When they shoot close to you on the ground the gun vibrates your vision so bad you will see double or triple. I have always loved these planes since seeing them in action supporting us in the field.

The rounds hit the target before the sound of the gun does. Most combatants hear the telltale sound of the Warthog's engines, and they run away. 04:46 Kim Campbell was at the time one of only two Warthog pilots to have ever successfully landed a Warthog in Manual Reversion mode. The other pilot got the plane on the runway, but ran off the side and crashed.

This beautiful sturdy gal needs to stay in service. If they shelf this jet, so many soldiers are going to have bad days. We called for CAS so many times we got familiar with the voices of a few pilots. "Bushy" was our favorite. She was a tough-ass firebrand that could fly that A-10 like she was riding a goddam unicorn. Except this unicorn shit 500lb bombs instead of rainbows. She had this smooth Virginia accent, and when we heard her voice say "Rolling In", every damn Marine fell in love with her. The A-10 is very feared by our enemies who have seen it in action. You commented about the sound it makes when firing it Canon. That sound is very distinct. It is without a doubt the best sound our troops could hear while pinned down during battle. It basically means the enemy is dead and the ones lucky enough to have an encounter with the warthog and live to tell about it loose the will to fight immediately.

The GAU/8 Avenger auto cannon. The plane was built around the weapon while other planes add weapons to fit the plane. In the Discord, the photo comparison side by side showed the GAU/8 as larger than a VW Beetle. Every round that is fired, the empty 'brass' is collected inside to prevent its own flight hazard. Depleted uranium ammunition, larger than beer bottles, is self-sharpening as they penetrate targets. System redundancies add to the robust design. If the Warthog takes fire, the fuel tanks seal any holes. If the primary flight system is disrupted, the controls are switched to the secondary parallel function, and if that is affected, the fly-by-wire old school controls allow for continuing controlled flight. If the avionics package goes off-line, the pilot can still aim and fire the GAU/8 Avenger or drop dumb bombs. A-10s have returned from missions missing wings or missing an engine, no problem. They can land and take off from more unimproved strips than most planes in military inventory except VTOL craft. Apparently, the latest upgrade for A-10 will allow them to synch up with paired drones and act as forward control, giving them additional missiles and ordnance while loitering over the battlefield, leaving the GAU/8 in the pilot's hands.

When I was in Jr.High and High School, I was an Aerospace Explorer Scout. Our leader was a retired Air Force Major, so he was able to arrange some unique tours for us. Among them was a trip to RED FLAG, the U.S. Air Force equivalent to the Navy's Top Gun, located at Nellis, AFB in Nevada. While walking down the flight line to witness an exercise between 5 F-5 (aggressors) and 3 F-15 Eagle (good guys), I witnessed an example of the A-10's survive-ability. Sitting in a hanger, being inspected by mechanics, sat a battered A-10 that hed just returned from a mission in Central America. There were bullet holes all over the aircraft, holes in the wings, flight controls, and tail, and TWO FEET of his right wing tip was missing. The engine on that side was sitting on a stand with external and internal damage that looked like it grenaded after being pierced by bullets. The tire on that side was also flat. The mechanic said that the pilot was able to fly it home (from Central America to Nevada) on it's back up hydraulic system and one working engine. The flat tire was a surprise to him and he ended up in a ditch during landing. The crew chief said, 'Don't worry, we'll get her flying again. She ain't done yet.'

When you plan your next US trip, try to schedule it around an Air Show. This is when the Air Force opens up the base to everyone to see the toys they have. Depending on what is in the program, you can see the F-16 Demo Team (the Thunderbirds), A-10, B-52, KC-135, and several other aircraft. They will sometimes invite civilian airlines to bring in a couple of their aircraft so people who never have flown to see those aircraft as well.

I was in AFJRROTC in High School, and; being in Southeastern Virginia, we went to Open House at Langley quite a few times. But the best trip there was a bit different. Reserve pilots have to put in a certain amount of flight time annually, and generally fly empty. But arrangements were made, and a small group of us got to ride along in a C-130. Being Operations Officer on the Squadron Staff, I was one of the 2 or 3 who were able to go to the Cockpit and look around, check out the view from above, and try to recognize landmarks. Damned near impossible when you've never seen things from that viewpoint. But then we were all strapped in again, and some crewmember (Cargo Master?) with a big headset on walked to the rear of the plane. We were cruising along around 3500 feet, and this guy rode the rear hatch down as they opened it up ... and the Pilot descended, and bounced the plane off of the runway, simulating a touch-and-go Cargo drop. It was quite a unique experience!

I worked weapon systems on this plane for the first four years of my 31 years in the AF. I was totally awed the first time I saw them lined up on the tarmac......just a bad ass machine of war, a flying tank, and the most lethal, manned, flying weapon platform in the AF, still.... Back in the 70s/80s, A-10 pilots were mercilessly ragged for flying a plane that suffered bird strikes from behind (impact with birds, but because it was so slow, the birds would supposedly hit them in the ass.....hyuk-hyuk, etc). The first Gulf war changed that crap with a quickness and there were NO more jokes!; zoomie pilots (fast planes like F-16, F-15, etc) understood that, not only was this platform absolutely bad ass and could kill you in multiple ways, anytime, any weather, but it would do it TO YOUR FACE, then immediately do a figure eight in the sky, come back and kill you some more! (unlike zoomies who skirt the clouds and lob crap from a much safer distance AND speed, and then scoot away)......which further demanded mad respect for the pilots who fly these awesome machines, often at treetop level and below the peaks of mountains to get close enough to look into the eyes of their targets......before annihilating them. Yeah, THESE pilots stare right down the barrels of the guns that are blazing at them, so......even the female pilots (yes, there are some) have HUGE brass balls. And finally, ask any ground pounder (Army or Marine infantry) who has experienced direct combat what they think of the Air Force's asinine attempts to get rid of this plane and they will howl.....because this plane is even more effective at eliminating threats than the best helicopters the Army or Marines have. NOT kicking those platforms or their pilots AT ALL.......they're ALL bad ass......but they just don't have the firepower of this machine. First aside: Back when I was working on them, they had NO Air-to-Air capability (no AIM-9 missiles), so, other than the gun (which was very limited), no way to protect itself from an airborne threat ......its been interesting to see all the upgrades over the years. Second aside: In the early 2000s, I had occasion to visit the AF Museum at Wright Patterson AFB near Dayton Ohio (HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend it if ever you can). Imagine my shock when I walked up to an A-10 on display that I had worked on 20 or so years earlier. Standing in that museum, staring at a plane I'd worked on......was the first time I actually felt old. Time waits for no one......it will roll over you and keep rolling as you stand up in it's tracks and wonder....."WTF just happened?" I still have a polished (powderless, of course) 30mm round sitting on my dresser (presented before I moved on in my career). Looks a bit like a rude adult toy or some sort of phallic symbol, but its always a nice conversation piece.....lol. Loved this plane.....still do.....and miss working on it. Peace out....

Mentioned this several times on various videos and platforms. The A-10 was desgned in the 1970's; here was the world. The Cold War was on an "Europe" was the ~ 200 miles between the Alps and the Ardenne; the Fuldo Gap. THe Warsaw Pact had over a million men, 50,000 tanks, and 100's of thousands of armored personnel carriers and mobile artillery at the starting line. The tactic was Blitzkrieg on Steroids and Hope-Like-Hell the French would stay on the fence with their nukes while the rest of Europe was immolated. The A-10 (and to a dgree, the AH-64 Apache), was desinged with one mission: carry enough whoop-ass to effectively take out a batallion of Warsaw Pact armour in the 10 seconds of combat that the pilot would survive. It was brutal caculus for a brutal war that, thank God!, never happened.

Hi Courtney, the story I heard about how the A-10 got it's nickname of Warthog goes back to earlier fighter aircraft produced by Republic Aircraft. Apparently, the early models of the Republic F-84 (The "Thunderjet") had an unfortunate habit of having it's nosewheel collapse on the ramp for no reason. The ground crew nicknamed them "Hogs" because they looked like pigs rooting through their stalls with their noses down in the dirt. Later models of the F-84 were greatly improved with swept wings and of course the nose wheel issue addressed. These were called "Super Hogs". When the A-10 came along, it was nicknamed the "Warthog" following tradition and the fact it is kind of ugly. I've also heard that the F-84 was nicknamed "Hogs" because with a full bomb load they took forever to get off the ground. They finally took off when they smelled dirt at the end of the runway, like a hog would smell dirt. I'm sure there are other stories out there, but I like the first one the best. Stay warm!

Courtney, the other interesting aspect of the Thunderbolt II, Named after the Thunderbolt fighter from WWII, Is that the pilots talk to the troops on the ground while making their attack runs. The ground forces can call out where they need fire from the A-10s directed and let the pilots know where friendly troops are to prevent friendly fire casualties. Troops on the ground know that machine guns sound and know that they have air support. Oh, and the enemy also knows the sound and knows they are in trouble when they hear it.

Growing up near a munitions plant in the U.S., that is an all too familiar sound. They called the hump that test fired the rounds from "Tracer Heights". When they test fired at night it was like the 4th or July. The sight and sound was just awesome. We also had A-10's frequent the skies over our house during the NFL season. They used to do all the fly overs of the stadium before a game at one time. Our house seemed to be in the holding pattern and would fly over the house 3 or 4 times before they went over the stadium. There were times they would be so low you could see the pilots. I'm a form and function person. Not so much the glitzy. This aircraft is my favorite hands down and to me is one of the most badass planes period. Looks tough, flies tough and is tough. Who knows how many lives this plane has probably saved. And you just can't beat the throw back graphics on these planes. ❤

The aircraft was built AROUND the gun. I believe that this is the first time that was done. It's a beautiful plane, and with proper support, is still relevant almost 50 years after it was first fielded.

As an Air Force,Veteran my job was providing security for the Air Craft arsenal, including these remarkable beasts. Some of them were based at Myrtle Beach AFB in South Carolina. When id go to tge Beach for R&R id go fishing off the Pebble Beach Pier which happened to be directly in line with the runway. When the A-10s were flying, theyd take off and fly right over my head and out to sea, bank and make a huge circle, land and take right back off and do it again. Its called touch and go. So cool to watch. But even cooler, when i was in Desert Warfare training in Indian Springs Nevada, in the Nevada desert north of vegas, the Air Force conducted Red Flag Operations. That is when representative aircraft from bases around the country, fly to Nevada and conduct day and night live fire operations,at the bombing range. I got to watch, F15, F16, F4E, and A10 in action from barely a mile away. Being in a foxhole facing the mountain range, and the Bombing range was between us and the mountains so the explosions and impacts and BRRRRRRTTTT! Gatlin gun fire echoed off the hills. Amazing! I also watched,Red Flag when i was in the,Philipenes. Saw the A10 and another cool plane called an OA,37 Dragonfly.

The A-10 entered service in the US Air Force in 1976. I'm stunned you are only now learning of it's capabilities 53 years later. That's like not knowing that the B-52 bomber was first operational in the late 1950's and is still one of the most important bombers we have in our Air Force and will continually be into the 2040's. My father was a B-52 pilot in the 1950's and before that he was a B-47 bomber pilot in the early 1950's. And before that he was a B-17 pilot in WW II, shot down on July 26, 1943 and remained a POW in Germany until April 1945 when the advanced elements of Patton's 3rd Army liberated his POW camp. He didn't get home until late August 1945, met my mother and I was born in September 1946. Yep, I'm a baby boomer who is now 76 years old and still feeling good. I don't have much time left, so I feel sorry for the younger generations that are witnessing the decline of our western civilization, which is what they wanted. I was a Marine platoon commander in Vietnam 1968-69. I lost a lot of my Marines killed and wounded. If we had had the technology of today, the majority of my Marines would have made it home to live the life they were supposed to have. But for navigation on the ground, I only had out of date French maps and a military compass. That made it extremely difficult to call in artillery and close air support because they too didn't have GPS navigation and they too had out of date maps. Times have changed for both the better and worse in combat. Technologies bring incredible advantages and the enemies bring equally or in some cases better technologies. This makes combat today almost as deadly as I survived over 50 years ago. But technology isn't the entire answer to success. Experience and training also play a crucial role. An enemy may have better technology, but our training and eventual experience can and usually does more than compensate. In the beginning of WW II both the Japanese Zero aircraft and the German aircraft were far superior to ours (the allies). Yet we won WW II because our technologies caught up to and surpassed theirs but more importantly our training and experiences exceeding theirs. You seem like a sweet individual, but somewhat naïve about the real world. I would like to have met you for a glass of wine and some interesting conversations. Alas, I'm an old man and no woman wants to share wine and conversation. Maybe next time around, things will be different. If you don't know what I mean, then you are more naïve than I thought. No problem. When you die, you will understand.

As most people have heard at this point, the A-10 can fire depleted uranium rounds from its gatling gun. What some people don't understand, is what depleted uranium does. Uranium is extremely dense. Most metals will mushroom when they hit another metal surface. But when uranium hits metal, it actually gets sharper. The now-sharpened round pushes the armor it hits into the interior of the vehicle/tank. Now you have a sharp bullet the size of a beer bottle plus armor shrapnel inside the vehicle. On top of that, uranium rounds can spontaneously ignite when exposed to oxygen. So now you have the round, the shrapnel and fire inside.

Great video reaction! I know a guy who was in combat in the Middle East; his butt (& his friends' butts!) were saved a couple different times by A-10s, so he *loves* the A-10! And he'd probably give you a thunbs-up 👍 for being such a fan of it too! And I agree with the suggestion that next time you're planning a U.S. trip, look around for an airshow to go to, especially one put on at an Air Force base! At a U.S.A.F. base's airshow you might get a chance to watch some planes (maybe even an A-10!) put on a real demonstration of their weapons! (The only airshows I've been to were at civilian airports; no live weapons-fire there!) P.S. - yeah, the GAU-8 Autocannon (gatling gun), and it's ammo, was designed to be able to take-out the heaviest tanks; then they designed the plane to take the gun, hence one of it's nicknames 'the flying cannon'. That sound, by everything I've seen/read, is truly stunning if you're anywhere *near* it! Also, although it doesn't come across that well in videos, apparently the engine's sound is distinctive enough that after exposure to it, you'll always recognize it ... so on the battlefield the enemy quickly learns to run/hide if they hear it coming. Which is one reason why A-10 pilots prefer to come in low - less warning of their approach! (And also that being really low makes it a harder target to hit with ground-based weapons.)

Courtney...the A-10 can fire a mix of armor piercing and high explosive incendiary 30mm cannon rounds at a rate of up to 70 rounds per SECOND. There are not many objects (from tanks to warships) that can survive the A-10's attention. Add to that the aircraft's ability to carry up to 16,000 pounds of underwing ordinance, as bombs, missiles, and rockets, and you have a VERY potent ground pounder to support our forces on the ground. As a former paratrooper from the 82nd, I'd rather have a pair of A-10s overhead than an entire squadron on F-35s.

If you haven't heard, the term turret is a gun in a swiveling platform like the apache, the Cobra or tanks. The A-10 Warthog has a fixed gun, not turreted. It's just a big ass gun. The only disadvantage is you have to point the aircraft at the Target to hit it where is if you have a turreted weapon with our helicopters you just look with your head and helmet and the gun will automatically turn and start firing so you don't have to fly towards the target.

The gun on the fron of the A10 is the modern high speed equivalent of the old time ( gattling gun) , but instead of being operated by a hand crank its powered by a high speed electric motor and fires MUCH larger armor piercing rounds about the size of a long neck beer bottle - its a deadly air to ground high speed cannon that can fire 3,400 rounds per minute
