@@CourtneyCoulston There are other videos that discuss how the batter has so little time to react to where the ball is on the pitch... it's worse when it's returned in a line drive to the pitcher because it's often faster, AND the pitcher isn't nearly as prepared. If you're a paid professional athlete, it's because you've got a little something extra. We just watched what 'extra' means for baseball... reaction time and hand/eye coordination.

@@CourtneyCoulston I played baseball alot when I was younger (shouldn't have ever quit) but I was considered a utility player. I've played every position, but the worst injury I had was at pitcher. People don't realize how quick a comeback is and how hard the ball is... I had the lace marks from the ball on my forearm for over a week from where I tried to catch it and missed. They took me out the game and I ended up going to the doctor because they were afraid it fractured my arm. It wasn't, but hurt like the dickens.

I’m a pitcher and was in this kind of situation a few times. It’s more of a put the glove where you think it’s going and hope for the best. It’s mostly a self defense kind of thing. For me, I didn’t realize I was about to get hit until after the play happened. Great video as always!

Maxwell Harris the first come-backer I ever faced happened when I was either three or four. All I remember is seeing the kid hit the ball, it coming right at me, then waking up in mother’s lap on the sideline and that kid coming over to apologize. That league now requires “pitchers” (players who stand near the coach as he tosses the ball) to wear helmets with face masks.

4:40 A ball caught in foul territory before hitting the ground counts as an out. The area behind the batter is considered foul territory.
@jck17944 жыл бұрын
actually on that play, it's just a tipped third strike. The count was 1-2. Catching a tipped third strike is an out anyways.
@maxwellharris5074 жыл бұрын
Quite often, the balls will be exchanged for clean ones to prevent pitchers from either team gaining edge. MLB is super strict about pitchers scuffing the ball or loading it up with any sort of substance. A classic from the Dead Ball Era (hardly any home runs), is the Spitball.

Yep. Foul tip into the catcher's mitt counts as an out. Even a bobble counts as long as he can secure it in the glove without it touching the ground.

In baseball, *any* time the ball is hit and caught before it touches a wall or the ground etc it's an out. Glancing blows that don't hit it but just graze it as it's going into the catcher's mitt don't count tho.
@mr.invisable69194 жыл бұрын
I found this. I thought everyone might like this breakdown. If a fastball travels 95 miles per hour, you have 95(5280/3600) = 139.33 feet per second. Divide the distance from the pitching rubber to home plate by the speed of the fastball in feet per second. On a major league ball field this distance is 60 feet 6 inches, or 60.5 feet. For a pitch traveling 139.33 feet per second, you have 60.5/139.33 = 0.434 seconds. Your fastball reaction time is therefore equal to 0.434 seconds. So, yes milliseconds

After you get some experience you can get an idea of where the ball might go. That helps a bit in getting ready for the come backer or the hot shot heading toward your area of occupation. With all that sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. (Also speaking from experience).

Explanation: A batter foul tips at 4:42 it's considered live. The catcher can catch the ball before it hits the ground then it's an out
@big8dog8874 жыл бұрын
Further explanation: a caught foul tip is only an out if there are two strikes, (which was the case here). Had he dropped it, it would have been a foul ball and the batter would have gotten another swing. With no strikes or one strike, that play would have simply been another strike, whether the catcher caught it or not.
@thomasvlaskampiii68504 жыл бұрын
While yes, the pitcher is able to throw the ball at roughly 100 MPH, when the batter hits it, you have the speed of the ball plus the force of the bat. So its flying back at the pitcher at roughly, its hard to calculate these things on a phone lol, 150-200 MPH
