Max Schmeling was never a Nazi and never joined the party. I believe he was actually involved with saving a Jewish family since the party shunned him. Also note that he became good friends with Joe Lewis later in life and helped Joe during difficult times. It's a must read on the two of these boxers and vastly different paths.

When the Miracle On Ice happened I was in my 2nd year of college. And was going to college in Northern Minnesota, USA. In that part of Minnesota Ice Hockey IS THE sport to be in bar none and one of the Olympians from that team was from the town I was living in at the time. I know EXACTLY where I was at for the game against Russia. With the Church Youth Group at an Ice skating place. And they had all kinds of TV on at the place and everyone of them showing the game. So I skated for 5 min and watched the game the rest of the time. As did all of the guy. Only people out on the ice were safety employees and the girls. lol It went crazy when we beat Russia. Oh and did u know that Buzzy Schnider's son played him in the movie Miracle.

Sports, in general, always play a vital role in helping our country heal after a tragic event. I think it has something to do with a distraction from the grief and a feeling of normalcy that they bring, assuring everyone that life can go on. I don’t think this is unique to America but it is truly effective here.

As a huge Nascar fan, Nascar ran a race at Dover some 12 days after 9/11. They paid their respects and 60,000+ filled the stands waving American flags. The favorite, Dale Earnhardt Jr wins and the place goes nuts. In 2021, Nascar ran a 9/11 20 year Memorial race at Richmond and the pre race ceremony was emotional. I watched the 1999 Women's World Cup Final live. I was 12 years old at the time. They had sudden death overtime rules back then, so if the ball had gone in, the USA would have lost as the host. I jumped in the air excitedly when Kristine Lilly headed the ball off the line.

One more thing to be patriotic about is that when there is an earthquake, fire, flood, typhoon, or any other major catastrophe, the US is always among those that respond to our fellow human beings in pain or peril. We are generous and do care about people, whether friend or foe. The Marshal plan after WWII blunted any hostility against the US and our allies. One of the most touching things that the USAF did after WWII was the Berlin Airlift, and the 'candy bombers'. They dropped candy with handkerchief parachutes to the children at the end of the runway. There is a story on KZbin about it.

I was 9 when the "Miracle on Ice" took place. The chant, "USA! USA! USA!," stays with me to this day. We heard it return after 9/11 and with the death of Osama Bin Laden.

Whats sad is Jesse Owens could dine and stay in the same hotel with his teamates in Germany. But when he got back to the states he was not allowed to use the front door at the waldorf and had to use a freight elevator to attend a reception in his honor. And he never was invited to the white house by FDR.

Many people do not realize that the Miracle on Ice game was not the championship game. What made it so meaningful was that that Russians were professionals in all but name. They had been playing together for the Soviet government for years and were so powerful that they were expected to win the gold. The Americans were a collection of college players who had been brought together to form a team. They had not been expected to even get this far. To win that game was a monumental feat. But two days later, following that highly charged and emotional accomplishment, they had to go out and play Finland for the gold. Talk about a letdown just waiting to happen. But they won. Russia took the silver by beating Sweden. Eveytime there is any kind of survey of the greatest American sports moment, this one is almost always # 1.

The one that most stands out to me that the list left out was Kerri Strug’s second vault after sustaining an injury that would have eliminated most male or female competitors. I’d easily place that higher than the wrestler’s piece, not to take anything away from him. Absolute agreement of the #1 pick, though. The ancient and modern histories of the games as specific time periods, in the ancient world, where warfare between city-states was outlawed and safe passage even through the midst of a siege or two warring camps was guaranteed and the resurrection of the modern games as ways nations could compete bloodlessly rather than warfare, are the true essence of sports. I might also include the ‘92 Dream Team as a setting aside of rules that favored certain nations’ use of ‘professional amateurs,’ and a return of the notion, “You send your best, we’ll do the same and we’ll settle it on the floor, in the pool, on the track.” Charlie Barkley summed it best, “It pissed me off to see these teams of grown men beating college kids and celebrating like they did something.” By the way, allowing pros to play hasn’t assured American dominance in basketball, Canadian dominance in ice hockey or anything else. Im just for the best competing without arbitrary rules against that.

These things last. I teach college and maybe 3 years ago I had a young woman who was the daughter of Russian immigrants in my class named Tretiak. After several weeks, I couldn't stand it anymore ad started to ask "are you related to...", and, before I finished, she said "no". FYI Vladislav Tretiak was the goalie for the USSR hockey team in the 1980's OLympics and before was the best goalie in the world for the Red Army team. 40 year later and a 19 year old was at least aware.

Interesting fact about girls' gymnastics... all the Olympic champions were coached by the same man for over 30 years, first Nadia Comenici in Romania, then ? in the Soviet Union, then Mary Lou Retton in the US. The champions now are coached by his wife and his primary coaching assistant going head to head.

It's important to set the record straight. According to Jesse Owens himself, Hitler did not snub him (Hitler that day had to leave early and didn't congratulate anyone). Owens said that they exchanged congratulatory waves. However, Owens did feel that he had been snubbed by someone: Franklin D. Roosevelt. A month after the Olympic Games, Owens told a crowd, “Hitler didn’t snub me-it was [Roosevelt] who snubbed me. The president didn’t even send me a telegram.” Roosevelt never publicly acknowledged Owens’s triumphs-or the triumphs of any of the 18 African Americans who competed at the Berlin Olympics. Only white Olympians were invited to the White House in 1936.

Max Schmeling was never a Nazi. He was in the Wehrmacht during WWII of course, but if memory serves me he was never a committed Nazi or even a member of the Nazi Party. He in fact became a close friend of the "Brown Bomber" Joe Louis and helped him financially when he was in dire straights later in life because of mismanagement of his money and Louis's inveterate charitableness. Schmeling in the wake of the war had become a successful distributor of American soft drinks in Germany and had a lot of compassion for Louis who had destroyed him in the ring in their second match. Schmeling was a former champion when they first met and Louis an undefeated young rising star. Louis on the other hand had become champion prior to their second match having defeated James J. Braddock who was the celebrated "Cinderella Man" who became champion when he defeated Max Baer Sr.

In fact long after the Second World War, it was revealed that Schmeling had risked his life to save the lives of two Jewish children in 1938

Patriotism is something that feels like it’s sorely lacking these days. To clarify, Patriotism is not loving what the government is doing or going along with it if they’re wrong. Its not forgetting or forgiving times when the nation has done wrong, ever. It’s not forgetting the rest of the world exists and being selfish. What it is, is love of the country for what is good about it and trying to change what’s wrong for the better. There seems to be too many Americans that hate America, while completely forgetting the reason they can even march or say what they want is because of where they live. They seem to not understand, or don’t care, or maybe they were never taught, that the US has the potential to be an amazing country. In my eyes, it already is, but there’s flaws that need to be fixed. Change is a slow process, but change has happened and will continue to do so, hopefully for the better.
