@Poole The greatest country in the world is a subjective term... While sure, we don't have the health care or education of other developed countries (which in my opinion needs to be fixed), to act like we are inferior is ridiculous. I want you to realize that the U.S. military is carrying the weight of the world on it's shoulder. And to sit there and act like we don't disproportionately fund the international monetary fund, NATO, and the world bank is ridiculous. We are stationed in more than 70 countries (might I add to protect them), and so we obviously have less income for social services. We spend more money on global efforts (be it military technology, bio-technology, medicine, etc.) and so it is significantly more difficult for us to provide public assistance. And so by the metrics I'm assuming that you are using, we are most likely not the greatest country in the world. But if you think about our impact and our power in attempts to help others (regardless of our actual success in helping other nations) we are by far the best country. Again, by certain measures you can make your argument very valid, but when you look at the whole picture... America's government and policies has been one of the best (if not the best) things to happen to humanity as a whole. You can ridicule the U.S. all you want, but America has helped humanity by margins that were historically incapable. While the U.S. isn't a direct democracy, it sets the framework for democracies globally.

However, we "Left Behind" Thousands of Men (and a few Women) in the USSR/Russia in the aftermath of World War Two (when were were "allies") and later during the Cold War. Thousands more were Left Behind in North Korea (many transferred to Communist China and the USSR/Russia). Hundreds were Left Behind in Vietnam and elsewhere in Southeast Asia. Several hundred more have been Left Behind in Iran, and in other Sh!th0les across the globe since the 1930's... Every time I deployed for combat, or even on training missions, we were briefed, and most of us understood that circumstances (Political Considerations) might preclude even an Attempt to rescue my comrades or myself. Your video reminded me of a show where members of three different spec ops teams - American PMC (former Army Rangers), Russian SPETZNAZ, and Navy SEALs - competed in different challenges to see which team was the best of the best. The SPETZNAZ were eliminated and it came down to the PMCs and the SEAL team in the third and final round where they each had to infiltrate a guarded compound, rescue a wounded hostage (a dummy that they had to carry), and exfil to the top of a large hill to win the competition in the middle of a sweltering desert. Well, the SEAL team won and the PMCs were having such a hard time, they ran out of water and just gave up on their way up the hill. You know what the SEAL team did next? They went back down the hill and helped those guys, with their dummy hostage, up the hill. That encapsulated for me the kind of men that become Navy SEALs. They had already won the competition but instead of just sitting on the hill boasting of their victory, they transcended the competition and proved - without a doubt - why they are considered the best of the best.

When people ask me "why does the US spend so much on its military" or "why is the US so involved in everything around the world". This is my answer and one of my personal favorite stories. Edit: my understanding on the seal teams and seal team six. There are many seal teams, but the numbers are often rotated and some designated numbers are entirely non-existent. For example seal team two (just making this up to illustrate how secretive the teams are kept) may not be a real team this month as there may not be anyone physically on the team. As for "seal team six", within the seal teams there is a higher tier team which is often referred to as "seal team six". But almost certainly doesn't go by that designation. The reason for all the secrecy around the teams is to protect the units members and their families and to help prevent opposing forces from knowing exactly who and what has potentially been deployed against them.

I don't know how many actual SEAL teams exist but when Team 6 was created there was only Team 1 and 2. The number 6 was given to throw off our Cold War enemies at the time to make them think there were 6 teams. There was one team stationed on the east coast and one team stationed on the west coast. Read the book Rogue Warrior about the beginnings of SEAL Team 6.

"I can't believe they took down 9 bandits like that". Miss, a couple things to keep in mind. One, they wouldn't have made the attempt without overwhelming force on the objective. 3:1 in that kind of situation are considered acceptable odds. Two. The US tier 1 units, as well as UK and other NATO units, are the best at this kind of work. They have equipment that turns complete darkness to bright daylight, giving them a force multiplier that unequaled. And, what I consider last, hostage rescue is probably THE most important mission, on a personal level, that these troops undertake. Saving innocents is really what it's all about.

After he picked me up at the airport we were going to Picadilly and rode the tube. We got off at a stop a few stops before to walk and i saw a young woman being harrasssed by a by a man on a bicycle. I told my friend to speed up. i got between her and that guy and my friend on the other side and i said in my best Chicago accent, "Hey, how you doing?" I introduced myself and we started talking and ignored that guy. He said something stupid and i replied, "You step off that bike it will be worst mistake in your soon to end life." he rode off, nearly getting hit by a passing car in the process. I laughed loudly for him to hear. Walked her to bus stop where she got on and we walked away.

Hearing stories like this freaks me out. Dad was a team leader on SEAL Team 6 for 7 years (which everyone calls bullshit on but what can I do about it?). He talked to me one time about his “job”. He captured war criminals and and did loads of amphibious night Ops along with training local special forces. Other than that, he only told me 4 of the countries he was in and only the funny stories. I’ve learned more about him from his teammates (in secret) than he’s ever told me. He won’t tell my mom or sister either. So I hear stuff like this and I remember that my dad could put me or anyone in the dirt before we realized it. He keeps his medals, commendations, and photos in a safe. They’re the only thing I asked to be in his will for. And he’ll always be the coolest guy I know.

Shashank Makhija I’ll do the two best then the worst. 1: SEAL rotations are 6 on 6 off. 6 months in country, 6 months in the US for RR and more training. He spent a total of 24 months training these guys, making friends in the village, all this stuff. He bought ice cream for the women, candy for the kids, and liquor or cigarettes for tine men. He was half way through one rotation when a guy jumped out of an alley, pushed dad on his back, and he says the guy was already running away with his boots and jacket before he hit the ground. 5 local dudes took down the thief, beat his ass, gave bad his stuff, then the 5 dudes asked if dad wanted the guy to “disappear”, which he had to decline multiple times 2: my dad isn’t a big guy, but he’s insane with hand to hand. They were sitting around a fire one night with the guys they were training and this new guy picks a fight with dad. The dude already stood up and took his hat and jacket off. Dad was still holding his drink and asked “are you sure?” Dude called him a bitch and stuff. So dad sighs and says “alright man.” He takes off his watch and hands it to a buddy. Dad stands up and asks again, “are you serious?” The guy says yes, so dad indulges him. Dad through one straight right basically right at the guys chin. The guy is instantly unconscious, so dad sits back down, puts his watch back on, and keeps drinking. 3 (the messed up one) So he helped train local special forces in South America for 18 months. 36 total if you include the rotations he wasn’t on. He finishes his third 6 month rotation, comes home, all is normal. A week or two later, he gets a call from the fresh team leader of the SEALs they swapped with. The man explains to dad that the spec ops guys had their first legit nontraining, live combat mission a few days ago. All 24 went out in two vehicles. On the way to their objective, they rolled over 2 landmines which flipped both vehicles onto their sides. Then they were ambushed by guerrilla fighters. All 24 died, they killed none of the guerrillas. Dad said thank you and hung up. Apparently, mom says he hardly spoke for days, then one day he was instantly back to normal. (Sorry about any grammar mistakes you might find. I’m a little stoned atm and I’m on iPad. Not super intuitive for lots of typing. There are few more stories. But if you talk about it then you’re a liar. Sorry bud)

Courtney, I served with SEAL Team 6 in 2006. Having the rare and unique opportunity to work with such a stellar group was an amazing and treasured experience I will have forever. In 2004 I was in Baghdad. The unit I was attached to then had received a daytime mission. There were two Italian journalists and one Polish journalist who had been kidnapped two months prior. They had discovered the location and flew out to the site. In a daring raid they captured two insurgents and freed the journalists. I was given a copy of the video, and the moment the cameraman arrives to the journalists, the looks on their faces upon realizing they were being rescued... Priceless. That moment, for me, epitomized why we were there in Iraq. Watching the video today still brings a few tears to my eyes.
