The origins of the game were parks and fields and even today there’s certain freedom in designing the dimensions of the field of play or “ballpark” and so in keeping with tradition, if a player can catch the ball it’s considered an out. Even if sliding into the dugout or crashing over a wall into the seats.

There is out of bounds when it comes to catches in baseball. For instance on that sliding catch where you mentioned you weren’t sure if there was out of bounds the player caught the ball while sliding into the dugout, but if he hadn’t caught the ball before he went into the dugout it wouldn’t have been an out. A catch has to be made with the player in bounds. The player can go out of bounds after making the catch and the out will stand, but the catch must occur with the player at least partially still in the field of play. A player can reach over the fence to make a catch as well, but like I said they must still be partially in the field of play when they make the catch.
@sanandaallsgood23933 жыл бұрын
There are foul lines (the white lines out toward the outfields from home plate) however the ball can still be caught.
@BootlessDave5 жыл бұрын
There is technically an out of bounds, if it goes to left or right of the base line its considered a "foul" however a catch can still be made on a foul ball resulting in a strike and the batter is out.

Yes, there is out of bounds territory. There is a line from home plate to first base and continuing to a pole in the outfield and a similar line on the third base side. Any ball hit outside of the area between these two lines is "foul" within it is "fair". If foul and caught by a defender the batter is still out, but if it hits the ground it counts as a strike. Except if it would be a third strike, then we just ignore it (kind of us, yes?). The third strike must be either a swing & miss or a pitch through the strike zone without contact. There is also a rule about a ball that makes fair ground contact but rolls or bounces foul prior to reaching the outfield also being called foul.

One thing you should know is that Chapman, Donaldson and Machado have the strongest arms of the best third basemen in the MLB. Ankiel converted from a hard throwing pitcher to an outfielder and fought his way back into the major leagues and was for several seasons among the leaders in throwing out runners from the outfield. Catcher Molino has the quickest, most accurate arm in baseball. He once threw out two of the fastest runners in baseball...IN THE SAME GAME. Then there was Bo Jackson. There was no one to compare him to. But the bare handed catch David Wright made is my choice for best catch of ALL TIME.

After the games are played, the bats and much of the game used equipment is sold/auctioned and the proceeds go to breast cancer awareness and prevention.

One of the hardest things in the world is to hit a small round ball that is thrown at you at a speed of 100 mph (160 km/r) with a stick. In the game of baseball, they have girl volunteers who help out by gathering up the baseballs that are hit in foul territory (outside the left and right lines projecting from home plate). They help prevent delays in the game from the umpires having to take time out every time a foul ball is hit, which happens quite often in a typical baseball game. Almost always, they each bring their own leather ball gloves to the game. The catches they make are sometimes better than the catches the professionnal players make.
