That first 3 minutes of ultra slow drill is possibly one of the best drill pieces ever written. So hard to pull of that flawlessly. And then it ends with that crescendo. Such a brilliant opener. (And don't even get me started on those uniforms)

Ahhhhh Phantom Regiment. They are the top story tellers of DCI as you've seen with the Spartacus show. Their 2011 Juliet show is still one of my favorites to listen to, and the ending is just super powerful, highly recommend that one. And to answer your question, yes all members including the drum major (conductor) are under 21 Others on the list that i wish i had money to guarantee recommend for you: Carolina Crown: E=MC2 , Rachstar The Cavaliers: XtraordinarY , Secret Society The Cadets: Between Angels and Demons I really can't wait until you can make it to a live show. It takes the epic up to a different level.

Phantom performed a show in Pittsburgh that year in the pouring down rain. It was coming down in buckets. We stood right next to Kristy Spears the Drum Major. There was no lightening so the judges allowed the show to go on. There performance was amazing! We all got drenched but didn't mind a bit because Phantom put on such a great show. Great memory.

I’m surprised it didn’t turn to a standstill. I was at NightBeat back around ‘98, and that show turned into a standstill after a couple performers from the opening corps (Les Etoiles, I think) had some falls due to the rain, and ended up going to the hospital. No lightning there either, but because the movement changes are so sudden in the activity, they made it a standstill show for the safety of the other performers.

All the music here is by a 20th century composer from the (now former) Soviet Union named Dmitri Shostakovich. I only ever got to see Phantom once, in high school at an event Lake Erie Regiment hosted. Literally the only thing I can remember from the entire show was Phantom was still in all black, which to me seemed like the coolest thing ever, and at one point they were so loud, I could see the lid on my cup of soda actually vibrating. I was the kid in the trombone line who always got yelled at for playing too loud, so seeing Phantom playing with that kind of volume felt like some kind of win to me.
@joew7174 жыл бұрын
ahh, I clearly remember the first time seeing this show in Dallas Texas on my 16th Birthday. As good as the recording is, they were 100x better live! the soft parts were very soft and the loud parts were very loud and ever since it's been my favorite DCI show to date! Unlike a lot of modern shows their show was very minimalist, didn't rely on props or gimmicks, just a few flags for the guard, great music and drill, and a disciplined corps that played their butts off! I was with a corps out of Orlando, FL and just amazed by them. They even moved together off the field like this. The next night we were in Tulsa, Oklahoma and there was a tornado nearby so they stopped the show and sent everyone inside the school until the storm passed and I remember we were being a bunch of goofy band kids goofing off in a hallway when Phantom Regiment came in single file and intense. They didn't say a word, just came through in slow motion it seemed. Once the storm passed everyone went back outside and the show went on. Just a normal thing in that part of the country. The following year our contra bass (Tuba) instructor was one of Phantom's 4 tubas up front in the intro and he came with lots of great stories like how they had to plan when each player breathed so that it would sound like one giant cello playing a continuous note without any gaps. Also it was the first night we got to see the Blue Devils and the first notes scared the crap out of everyone!

I know this was a different era of DCI, but this applied even then: This show is a great example of how an understated presentation can succeed if your execution is as flawless as can be. The solid black uniforms with just a pop of blood red from guard. The slow, intentional footwork and simple forms. That could easily come off as boring, but Phantom really nailed the bold, confident presentation. Your attention is commanded the entire time. You know the pared down exhibition was calculated. They stood tall, kept disciplined feet, and let Shostakovich do the talking. Well done to anyone that marched this show. I will never forget it. P.S. props to my man on tympani. There are only a handful of individual faces I remember from shows over the years, and he is one of them. He was the voice of the people! I'll also never forget the drum major. I suspect this was her age-out year. What a capstone performance!

What’s even more mind-blowing is that they rallied like crazy during finals week (championships): they started the week in 4th, almost four points behind the Blue Devils. They climbed their way up in semifinals (3rd) and tied at finals! Talk about a defiant heart! And to answer your question from the video, yes, the conductor is 21 at most (at the time). Her name is Kristy Spears! The age rule by DCI has since changed slightly; you can now march in a corps as long as you don’t turn 22 before June 30 (so technically you could be 22 on tour and still be okay).

I don't think anybody has answered the question yet so I will: The conductors are known as Drum Majors. In most (if not every) case Drum Majors are current members of that corps and audition for the spot, it is fairly common to see an instrumentalist become a Drum Major (such as Everett Kim of the Blue Devils) and therefore have to abide by the age-out rule. Also, a brief history of Drum Corps: Drum Corps is an activity that was started in America by the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) as a means to give "young people" an activity to spend their summer on. The activity is modeled heavily after the military bands of the United States Armed Forces (USAF) and in looking at it under that lens you can begin to see the deep links. Color Guards are a means for presenting the nations "colors" (flags) and typical color guards (military kind) will have two flag bearers and also left and right guards (who carry rifles) Color Guards in marching band and Drum Corps also gain a lot of their inspiration from USAF drill teams (which you have reacted to before) and less common Sabre Guards PS: If this gets read in its entirety I will be shocked, but anyways leave a like if you learned anything, or leave a comment to correct me if I am wrong. Thank you!

I believe the cut off age was 21 back in '96. They increased the age out at 22 recently. George Hopkins of the Cadets made that proposal. He also proposed to increase the maximum corps size from 135 to 150. Before then it was only 125. Last year it was again increased to 152.

DCI trivia .. did you know??? The reason it was 128 to begin with was .... you could only fit 128 members on 3 motor coaches back in the day. 43 seats per bus but the back row was a bench ... you could technically fit 3 people there. Then busses got bigger, longer etc. And the limits on membership were raised. The initial rule went into effect after 1975 when Madison won with a 135+ member corps. Smaller corps petitioned for competitive equity and the limit was put in place during the '76 or '77 rules congress, based on seats per 3 coaches. The rest is history.

I made a request for this! For 2004. Hopefully Courtney sees it! ❤️💚 Agreed Daniel. Don’t get me wrong, 2014 was good. But 2004 I feel has a the full story in display.

As previously mentioned, they tied for first with the Blue Devils in 1996. If you haven't seen their first place show from 2008, you should definitely check that out. It's called "Spartacus" and it will blow your mind.

@@CourtneyCoulston would love to see you react to 1996 Blue Devils, the corps that they tied for 1st place. There has only been two times in DCI history were there was a tie for 1st.

You're welcome Courtney. Two others to check out if you haven't yet. 1989 Santa Clara Vanguard: Phantom Of The Opera 1992 Velvet Knights: Magical Mystery Tour Like the one I mentioned above, the endings are epic, but I don't wanna give you any spoilers.

Elijah Fowler I would love to see 2012 Devils and 2011 Cadets. Two very different, but equally fantastic shows. Shows the diversity of thought and design in the activity

@@wesleydecasere9832 agreed and as far as the Cadets goes; any corps that can use a 14 minute piece written for symphonic band _and_ "160 bpm" by alan sylvestri deserves 1st place. Also... Rip the baritone at the beginning of their performance

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Kristy Spears one of, if not, THE first female lead drum majors that DCI had ever seen? It shocked me when Phantom’s latest drum major in 2019, also a woman, said people warned her that Phantom “doesn’t typically do women drum majors.” It was such a flat out lie. Couldn’t believe they forgot about Spears.
