@@tuttiflooti I'm gonna say nope. The squeaky high notes weren't in the same league, reaction-wise.... Cause they were squeaky high notes. I'll take Roland's double C (yes, on a G horn) from BD's 94 closer any day. No mic, right in tune, and loud enough to be heard over the entire corps at full volume. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJeag51ohdeigck

This show is an abstract way of depicting the story of the tower of babel, hence the show title. The props are supposed to represent city buildings and skyscrapers. All the corps members are on the same big building (the tower of babel) and are struck down, forced to speak different languages. The beginning with the intense music and the screaming is representing the people unable to communicate. The drill shows this is as they guard and brass are separated. The two soloists on the props are like two people having a conversation. The big hit during the ballad and last movement represents the people coming together and understanding each other. The drill also conveys this as everyone is doing the same or reflecting the other half of the corps. One of the best designed shows ever!

Also if you’ve never listened to the source music of the ballad, “my body is a cage” by Peter Gabriel (also Arcade Fire, but their rendition went off Gabriel) you can understand that concept even further. The entire premise of the song is up to interpretation. I’ve read things ranging from eating disorders, depression, being struck with fear, watching the world move around you and you don’t know what to do. However, my favorite, and the one I believe to be real meaning, is about a paraplegic man who is still alive and sane, but can’t speak or express their thoughts. “My body is a cage that keeps me from dancing with the one I love, but my mind holds the key. I’m living in an age that calls darkness light. Though my language is dead, still the shapes fill my head. You’re standing next to me, my mind holds the key. Set my spirit free, set my spirit free. set my body free.”

Hey Courtney! Little instrument information: - The smallest brass instrument is the trumpet. For example, at the end of the ballad, there were three trumpets at the front and one hit a really high note (Second highest ever in DCI!) - Next, is the mellophone. They are the marching substitute for the french horn. They look kind of like a trumpet, but they have a really big bell in the front. At the end of the ballad, the mellophones were the instruments on the stairs in the center of the field. The really really fast note patterns, or runs, are almost always the mellophone. - Next is the marching baritone. They are the medium size horns. In the ballad, the two soloists on the tall platforms were baritones. They are my personal favorite, but that is most likely because I play the baritone. Most baritones have their bells facing upwards, but marching baritones face forwards. - While SCV does not use them, some drum corps also march with euphoniums. They are similar to baritone and to an untrained eye might even look identical. They're sound is slightly different, however, with a darker and more soulful tone. -Finally, the largest brass instrument is the Contra. These are also called contrabass bugles but are most commonly called marching tubas. They are the really large brass instruments that go over the left shoulder of the player. They have by far the lowest sound in the corp.
@trentfloyd5763
@trentfloyd5763 4 жыл бұрын
Can I also add that contra tubas add about 25-35 pounds more to the marcher. But besides all that baritone is the best brass instrument and you can't change my mind.

My father got the two of us tickets to DCI finals the year I graduated from high school in 2014. I was already a major fan of DCI from bearing witness to countless shows between 2008 and 2013. Even though I was a part of the marching arts through high school, little did I know I was taking it for granted the whole time. DCI is the pinnacle. The definition of the culmination of great passion/ commitment/grit/athleticism/musicianship ALL PACKED TOGETHER INTO ONE GIANT BLOWOUT OF A 12 TO 13 MINUTE SHOW! Every show takes countless hours of practice and rehearsal to get polished as close to perfection as possible. and that is EXACTLY what every single corps aims for. undeniable, undisputed PERFECTION

A drum corps consists of: A variation of tuba called a contra tuba section A baritone section or euphonium which is just a lower sounding trumpet A mellophone section which is the alto voicing (a trumpet with a huge bell) And a trumpet, which is the soprano voicing and hits the super high notes like you saw in this show.

Four years later, this popped up in my recommended. I was a sophomore in HS when I got to see this show in person, and it brings me back to those wonderful-wonderful days of high school band. The ending was so hyper-emotional for not just the performers, but the audience as well. Thank you for bringing a brilliant smile to my face this morning!

Hi Courtney, I love what you're doing here with various DCI performances and love watching how much you enjoy them. I marched with the Vanguard in the mid 1970's and have kept up with the activity ever since. I'm really glad you did a "reacts" video to SCV 2018 and I just wanted to add that this show is in my opinion (and everyones got one LOL) THIS performance is THE best I have ever seen....EVER! I've watch the DVD countless times and it still gives me goose bumps. Keep on doing these...there are plenty performances that would amaze you. Cheers!

Courtney: Just a few interesting facts about DCI and Drum Corps..... everyone on the field is 21 or YOUNGER! You age out as a musician at 21! Also, they travel the entire summer (about 2 months) in busses around the USA, from coast to coast, sleeping on gym floors in sleeping bags developing the show from city to city, from field to field, practicing all day in 100 plus degree heat, and then performing in the evenings. This all culminates in finals in Indianapolis, where only the top 12 go through to the final show and the winner is announced. Can you imagine the difficulty? Can you imagine the tenacity this takes? Can you imagine the dedication? Also, each individual in that field has to pay their own way (about $3500 per musician) to have the privilege of marching for their chosen corps. Hundreds try out for each corp (especially the top corps like Santa Clara Vanguard, Blue Devils, Phantom Regiment, Blue Coats etc). It is the most amazing thing I have ever experienced!

The beginning, Tower of Babel falls and creates chaos as no one knows how to speak or understand each other. The ballad shows the soloist starting off speaking a different way, through music. In the distance he hears a response. More and more people start responding and learning to communicate in this new way until they’re all finally connected through the language of music. Ugh. Brings me to tears every time.

I remember seeing this show for the first time. It blew me away. No one sat down the entire time. The feeling I had the entire time was like their 1989 first place Phantom of the Opera show. I think I saw you reacted to Vanguard's 88 show which by no means was a bad show but 89 was one of the best shows I have ever seen. Just my opinion. Vanguard rarely disappoints. In 2018 Vanguard was third heading into it. The scores were tight between the Bluecoats, Blue Devils, and Vanguard. After simis there was a lot and I mean a lot of talk of upset by Vanguard. Guess what! As you can see, they got it! There is a feeling when you are coming off the field when you know you hit your show and they knew they rocked that show! Great reaction video Mrs. Coulston.

Feel the same really. It didn't give me goosebumps unlike the last one she reacted to with the Mandarins. I liked the music better with them than this. Funny how they placed top in everything BUT the color guard, which was 3rd I believe. They are really tough and particular it seems in their grading. This show was fun to look at and had it's moments musically, but I dunno why I just didn't love it and preferred some of the others shows of that year over this one. Still a good show, just not my favorite or one that thrilled me emotionally.

Not a corp member, but high school drumline. One this show is amazing. Fav. Show I've ever seen. And yes, everything is planned out to a tee. From player placement to prop movement. Its not just the music that is practiced. It all represents something, like a previous comment you see above. Not trying to beat on ya, its nice to see an outsider respect this. Bc tbh we kinda get shit on for being nerds.

Hi. I luv your genuine response to this video- is so pure. Please look into the real story about this show. The bit I have heard is that the show is based on a community that didn’t speak/ understand languages of each other, hence the two side of the field doing different movements. That starts coming together one the two soloist start playing across from each other and the culminates once the section where the hip hop starts. Once that ends the Corp starts playing as one group in harmony. I followed this show from the first showing early in June to the Finals performance in August. I knew from the first time I saw this show that it was going to be something so special that it would make an impact on my luv for what the incredible young men and woman of DCI do for us. They are truly Blessed and provide a gift to us each and every season.

The last time SCV won the title was the tie with Blue Devils in 1999...19 years -- the longest gap between wind ever. Last solo win was 1989. Even up in the BD seating block at the Rose Bowl show early in the season, we knew 1) this was a monster program, and 2) we (BD) were in for a fight!
