I can’t watch any crown performance without crying. When I was In Junior high I watched my first Carolina crown show and my teachers asked me when I grow up what college I was going to and I told them “Carolina crown” then got into high school upset and embarrassed bc I didn’t know it wasn’t a college band 😂

Awee this made my day! 2015 Inferno was my first season performing in DCI (I was on the Color Guard) and it was a fantastic experience. You mentioned the tarps- I was one of the tarp runners for the massive “Abandon all Hope” tarp in the opener and lemme tell you that thing was HEAVY! I had all of your emotions and more while performing the show, so thank you for letting me relive the experience 5 years later❤️

I don't know why these DCI shows aren't bigger than they are. The skill, the talent, the music, the dynamics, the power, the precision, the emotion. It's ridiculous. CC you've done more to get me into this world than anyone. Keep it up!
@davidjack7418
@davidjack7418 3 жыл бұрын
Sadly, I think DCI generally does a poor job of promotion for the activity. It really doesn't help that they are so strict about copyright issues and video appearances on KZbin. I understand these are musical performances and it is hard to navigate through copyright issues, but there has to be a better solution than the current situation. The good news is that DCI has never been more popular. The last several years have set many records for crowds, and the activity is growing.

@@davidjack7418 Another issue is simple American snobbery...if it ain't football/basketball/baseball, etc it has no value, and even those at the very top of the game are looked at as losers who couldn't make a sports team. Yeah...I wanna see the average high school athlete lug around a set of tenors,
@davidjack7418
@davidjack7418 3 жыл бұрын
@@samsignorelli I disagree. I came from a high school whose band was very competitive and whose football team literally only won 4 games in all 4 years I was there. We were actually pretty well-respected in school years. I know that's unusual, but I think it comes down to exposure. Also, your average DCI fan isn't school-age, and I think more people would be interested if they simply knew about it. I share DCI videos a lot and most people never even knew the activity existed. They just don't have any concept of a marching performance that isn't attached to a school. I think most people can see the discipline and precision when watching a DCI performance versus what they are used to seeing from a high school or college. It's night and day.

@@samsignorelli My point was that I still feel like exposure is the issue. For virtually anyone I have ever shared DCI stuff with I got 2 primary responses: 1. I didn't know this even existed. 2. Wow, this is amazing. and this is among adults, who are far less likely to ever encounter it at all if they didn't at a younger age. I wouldn't bother with school-age kids on this. They've got all sorts of dumb social hurdles to jump over and music is a risky choice, sadly.

Crown's brass is by far the best in the business. People get caught up in how loud they can play or how many ridiculous brass runs they can perfect but where they really shine is the more subtle parts of brass playing. The reason Crown's brass resonates so well with people is because it's both technically impressive but more importantly it is emotional. It's the commitment to the dynamics that each member has that creates the emotion (at 5:30 the entire hornline goes from p to ff flawlessly). Also, they have perfect musical vertical alignment (10:28) even when they are spaced across the field (extremely difficult) (8:05)

@@mrbear1302 True Cadets did win the Ott that year. Their brass book was packed with runs and complicated music. I was really happy for them but imo the little things that crown perfects still makes them a better hornline over a corps with an entire show of 16th notes.

Favorite thing about this show is that its primary leitmotif is Dies Irae. Dies Irae was originally a gregorian chant and a song sung in Christian funerals in the 1500s. It directly translates to "Day of Wrath" as is intended to symbolize the wrath and judgment of God upon the wicked and those who will go to hell. The leitmotif itself is much shorter than the most famous part of the song (which appears at 4:43), so it can be used in just about any score. For example, it appears in many modern films in times were wrath or misfortune is coming to foreshadow the impending doom. A perfect example is the entire song of "Making Christmas" from "Nightmare Before Christmas". The entire song, but primarily its melody, is the leitmotif of Dies Irae. It's one of my favorite things in the world of European Musical History and Musical Theory. TL:DR: Crown uses damn cool leitmotif called "Dies Irae" so they can be all spooky Edit: Also love how at 12:00 when they return from "The Inferno" its Ode to Joy, also one of my favorite things

Courtney, thank you SO much for all your DCI reactions. I have been waiting for this specific reaction for such a very long time having absolutely loved this show, been fortunate enough to be present for this very performance you watched, and being from the home state of Carolina Crown (South Carolina). The positive attention you have brought to the activity as a result of your videos has not gone unnoticed and I think I can speak on behalf of others in saying you should definitely feel a part of the community. Your feeling about a strong hornline is something many of us completely understand and, these days, Crown is at the very top of the brass game. It cannot be understated just how very different the experience is live. You can quite literally feel that sound and it is exhilarating. So, it is my genuine hope that one day you can see a show in person for yourself. Thank you very much again all the way from South Carolina in the US!

I am SO happy that you waited this long to watch this show because you are becoming much more seasoned to what to look for in a drum corps show. I feel that you appreciated it much more than if you watched it months earlier. It really is truly wild that they didn’t take gold that season. I saw Ink and Inferno live, late season, and I get it Ink was superbly executed. But come on now. Look at the precision of this program. When they go under the sheet at the end, you can NOT tell they’re doing drill under there. It’s a blink of an eye. The moment they’re visible, they’re already done completing the set. This show was god-tier DCI content.

Got to watch them perform this show live at a different event and the wave of sound that hit us that year was even more amazing in person. It’s just so powerful. It’s a shame they got 2nd place that year making it one of the most contentious judging years in recent DCI history. They were neck and neck with Blue Devils that entire summer. It was something quite awesome to see both great shows.

What a wonderful show Crown had in 2015. I only wish I could have seen it in person. I really enjoyed seeing the pure joy on your face when they formed the crown at the end of their show!

Around the five minute mark you go from “reacting” to being legitimately moved by the music and it’s very entertaining.

Takes a lot for me to cry, and I can honestly say that I cried watching this performance the first time, too. Glad to see that this activity can bring an "outsider" to tears, too. Means Crown did their job. Inferno is still my favorite show that they have done in the last 15 years that I have been a Crown fan! Courtney, I'm so glad that you have not only committed your time and effort into reacting to these shows, but you have wholly embraced the art that has been put on the field. DCI and other music programs, whether in public school or professional orchestras, need the advocacy and support of people that aren't the usual "insiders." There is only so much that we can do on our own. Keep up the reviews and reactions! Hope to see you at Finals one day!

The first Crown show I ever saw.... and one of my favorite DCI shows of all time. The entire show was just nuts, and they didn't even get first place that year, which is both a shame if you're a Crown fan, and more so, a testament to just HOW good DCI shows can be. The drill for this show, there are SO many things to watch for... the 3D triangle that spins, the crown formed under the moving sheet, the fact that they almost never stop moving, it's just crazy.

Carolina Crown took us to the concert hall and to church ! That horn line is INSANE, that percussion is PRECISE and the color guard was TOO MUCH IN A GOOD WAY! I have to watch this program several times .

You started crying at the end, then *I* started crying... just a mess! lol I just want to say we LOVE hearing the opinion from someone that's "outside the activity" because the ultimate goal for marching arts is to entertain. It should be for *everyone*, not just those that have been a part of it. Your thoughts and opinions are valid, and arguably, more important to me as a designer! Also, I would say at this point, you're DEFINITELY a part of this community. 😊

This was the very first time I had ever seen drum corps. I went to a band camp in Indiana where we worked alongside Carolina crown, learning part of their show. My very first time ever hearing a drum corps was on the Wednesday of camp when we first played with them. Absolutely wild.

Crowns hornline is really good at emoting whatever they play. Your reaction was literally me when I first saw this show live that summer. Scv 2004 and Scv 2014 are two good shows as well thematically. They also use giant silks in those productions.

I became a fan of DCI when my son began playing trumpet (he taught himself!). He played with Southwind in Open Class for two years then auditioned for Crown his 3rd and received a contract to become a part of the 'team'. That was in 2019 and they received the award for best hornline that year and deserved it (absolute bias on my side). I know absolutely zero about music but I do know when I hear something that I like. Moreover, I know when I see an incredible performance. Each and EVERY drum corps that performs, no matter which class they are in, are incredible performers. Think about memorizing the music, the show (marching) and sleeping on a blow up mattress every night for 8 weeks on top of that and you'll understand how really incredible these kids are. I am such a huge fan of the activity. This show.......WOW!

YESS!! I was on the 50 at Nightbeat for this one, crying is an appropriate response :') Their hornline creates a wall of sound that you just feel. It genuinely feels similar to a shockwave in person. Ya gotta come to the states for it sometime.

Their finals run was unfortunately a rough one. (This is something I heard from one of my field techs so sorry for anyone if it's false) Apparently after they got 1st in semis the head drum major looked back at the core and said "guys, I don't think we're gonna win" and apparently that freaked the whole core out and had a rough run. Good enough to get 2nd but not good enough to even get the Brass caption award. I still love this show but I hate seeing these amazing shows have a rough finals run.

I love your reaction to this show. I will say again if you ever get a chance to experience it in person do. Crown is known for the best horn line most every year. Joe Heid is telling the truth. Thank you for doing this video! I will be dating myself but I lived in Charleston when they were forming Crown and remember the fliers sent out to the schools for auditions. I regret never trying out but the church and summer jobs took up all of my time. It's amazing to see how far they have come. Thanks again for the great video, Ms. Coulston.

Hi Courtney, newer follower recently and so happy that you are exploring DCI, as well as some of my other favorite things. Though not a DCI participant, I have many friends that have been in various corps over the decades, including Carolina Crown. I enjoy knowing that you have many of the same reactions that we have all had at one point in time or another. I enjoy your videos and thanks for the Halloween treats! 💀🎃👻 see you next time.

This is my all time favorite dci show, it’s based off of an Italian epic poem from the 14th century called the divine comedy by Dante Alighieri it’s written in three parts - inferno, purgatorio, and paradisio. The poem tells the story of Dante’s journey through Hell and then through the mountain of purgatory and eventually reaching Paradise or heaven

My high school marching band did a show where they used a giant scrims/sheet, back in the 1996-1997 season. They did a quick costume change as the scrim went over them (which the camera at BOA finals managed to all but completely miss), but I hadn't seen anything with a transparent scrim before, like what Carolina was doing. Cool stuff.
