For anyone wondering why the first verse's melody sounds "weird," it's because of the uneven way Dan wrote the lyrics vs. the melody. The rhymes land on beat 4, but the melodic line (aka musical phrase) sounds like it completes on beat 1. 1Once u2pon a 3morning 4dawn 1Ninja Bri2an and I 3happened u4pon[rhyme] a gold 1pond[phrase] It took me awhile to figure out why I had trouble following the melody in the first verse, so I thought I'd share.
