Totally agree with the comments about Broadgate. Should never have been changed. The greenery and gardens of it were a lovely aspect of the centre.

As a youngster in the 70s I visited my Coventry-dwelling Grandparents regularly in school hols (they lived in Tile Hill). Where I came from, buses were boring green. The maroon and cream livery of the Coventry buses had me enthralled. I also thought the city centre shopping precinct was amazing with it's multi-levels and ramps. I have very, very fond memories of Coventry in the 1970s.

Interesting that as I've always thought of Coventry centre as being some deeply-depressing concrete jungle reminiscent of an Eastern European city during the cold war... but then, I like Hull for the same reasons of it being where my grandparents lived.

It was much nicer back then. I agree Broadgate was much nicer. The town centre is soulless now. A concrete jungle. I've very happy memories using the buses to go everywhere around town. Happy days. 👍❤️

Broadgate should never had changed. It was far better when it was like this.

When I was a kid in the early 70s I used to go up and down the escalators in Owen and Owen just for fun and watch the peeping tom clock. 59 now and miss my childhood days living in Coventry

It was like that upto the end of 1980’s I remember. But buses only stopped going through here since end of 2010.

Broadgate hasn't been beautiful since the night of 14th/15th November 1940. If only the post war buildings on the western side of the square had been designed and constructed to the same high standards as the new cathedral. The front of the Primark building isn't too bad, but its rear from Burges 😱 And as for the Cathedral Lanes complex.....

Given that the Bedford Viva van at 0.11 wasn't introduced until 1963, the footage must be after this date. It was in production until 1983. The first bus - the one with the mainly cream paint - is possibly a Leyland Atlantean; they were introduced onto the Coventry fleet in January 1965. They were very unpopular, as Coventry preferred the locally-built (Radford) Daimler buses. If the cream bus is a Daimler Fleetline (and I think it is) the first of them was delivered in 1968. At 0.23 the red car reversing out (the position of the lights is a giveaway) is a Jaguar XJ Series III, which was introduced in March 1979. As it's parked behind the bank, the likelyhood of it being a new or near-new car is quite high, so, on balance, it's probable that the footage is from 1979/80.

Some parts of the footage are way earlier than that. I think this must be footage from several different eras.

It's before the WMPTE take-over on 1 April 1974 as the buses still carry Coventry Corporation Transport names on their sides (but after 1968 as has been mentioned). I'd say around 1970/71 for the first part.

Broadgate was turned into a zombie walkaround deleting all of the interacting parts.

Only hint of anything 'modern' was at 0:23 with the red series three Jaguar.

Yes- definitely not the 60s. Lots of cars from the 60s; but just like today, we don't all drive brand-newies!
