I have been in Coventry in summer 1999, my first travel abroad from Italy. At that time it appeared to me like a sad city, that had lost irreparably his ancient beauty. Now I watch at this images with some tears in my eyes and the hope to go back there very soon. Ciao

Indeed the nazis destroyed our ancient city in the blitz and they rebuilt it into a modern concrete monstrosity. A bit depressing now. I wish they could build line they did hundreds of years ago

I was born and raised in Coventry and was a teen in the 70's when it was a thriving and vibrant City. The rot set in when Broadgate was closed and turned into a windswept emptyness and the focal centre of the City was lost. Lady Godiva on the grass island, surrounded by the bus stops bringing hundreds of people into Broadgate every hour. Late buses on a Friday and Saturday night, the congregating of 'The Burton Boys'....The council then sold out to the Universities encouraging low income students and sub standard accommodation to take over, attracting low cost retail outlets and entertainment venues. Too late now. The trees are gone, the flowerbeds and verges are untended. Money is tight in a City that lacks investment and you can see why. I moved away 15 years ago but still remember the good days.

We go to Coventry every year or so as it's preferrable to Leicester (the other city we can conveniently visit when staying in the Midlands) and TBH Coventry is much the same as any other English City. Too many empty shops etc. The advantage Coventry has is the Market - which is much better than Leicester plus it's easier to get into the city Centre and park than it is in Leicester.

I spent good 5 years in Coventry that has shaped my life for the person that i am today. I can't forget those days working for ASDA catching shoplifters everyday, going to Casino in foles hill. those were the days.

Coventry City Centre is just in the process of removing a lot of the things shown in this video, as they got a cash injection for City of Culture 2021. I hope it works out and they don't make a mess of things again. I think Coventry has suffered enough with bad planning and gaudy buildings over the years,

Lived in cov all my life until I went to uni in 1997 then moved away permanently. I remember when there was the big fountain, telephone boxes and all the glass cases in the precinct and the round wimpy restauraunt. I remember Tiffanys and the walkthrough to the Burges before west orchard was built. I remember the wishing well and the grass before catherdral lanes and the subway from owen and owens to the church across the road. I went back last year and I was very sad, the city centre was dead, no one around at all and its now just so depressing. It used to be such a lively city centre...no idea what happened :(

Not what I was expecting being virtually destroyed in the war. I was hoping for some 40/50s modernist architecture, this seems very bland and poorly designed
@g4shf Жыл бұрын
Coventry already had a plan before the arrival of the Luftwaffe and proceeded to implement it; and it was ahead of its time particularly for the integration of cars, car parking and the inner ring road. There is some classic 1950's architecture - but it needs looking for and is much hidden now by later build. I don't go to Cov much now but when I next do will try and film some.

Why everywhere in Europe the post war reconstruction was done trying to reacreate the historical old towns exactly as they were, and in England not at all?

ash wednesday As a regular user of Coventry City Centre I have to say it works on a practical level - large car-less areas. Bits of it are ugly - Barracks Car park for example - but I always use it because it has level access to the shops.

Ash, you are so correct! Loved the old medieval Tudor buildings when I was growing up, real style. I have not seen Coventry in decades and now reside in Arizona. Coventry city centre looks so depressing I am sorry to say. Need those days of yore back!!
@paulbroderick84387 жыл бұрын
Agree. Arrogant council members forced fed this garbage to residences while they conducted business from the 'old school' council house surroundings immune from it all.
@fredgrove42205 жыл бұрын

If I may say, as a frequent visitor to Cov City Centre I think the planners did a pretty good job - the roads, car parks and shops are all integrated and there's a great market. I much prefer it to (say) Leicester). There's also some great 1960's art if you look carefully.

The glass-enclosed escalators are one of the grossest monstrosities and most ill-advised 'improvements' ever designed. What were the planners thinking? With the current obesity epidemic, they should demolish it and make people walk up the stairs.
