Best video so far. I’ve never seen anyone successfully plant into that much dead cover. Keep shaking things up!

Could you give us a quick video on what your cover crop mix is before corn with rates applied? Really enjoy the videos! Thanks!

It looks like you ended up with a pretty good crop. Now time will tell how the rest of the season goes. Moisture, heat, and time will make or break the yield. I am really amazed that you were able to plant in that heavy of a cover crop. Will you be terminating earlier next year???? The one issue we have been having with cover crops is getting them started in the fall. Our time frame is really short on getting the crop harvested and then the cover crop planted while still getting enough warmth to germinate the cover crop. We have played with aerial seeding but have not really had very good results.

I agree time will tell! I was amazed too, I felt like there had to be a way though. Great question on terminating next year. I’d like to say yes but the truth is I intend to plant green from May 1 - May 20th. That would have been just fine this year if the weather would have allowed. To terminate it early, would just forfeit many of the additional benefits a mature cover can bring to the table. Knowing I can now successfully plant through a mat this thick, I will probably let the cover grow until right before it produces viable seed (if I can’t plant before then). I’m afraid my fall planting window will be short this year too because of how late I got most of the acres planted. I’ve had similar success with an airplane. The best advice I have there is to fly it on standing crop right before a good rain.

I’m nervous about that too. Best of luck with your cover crop. I hope it all goes as planned! What cash crop are you following when you plant your cover this fall?

@@GiffinFarms Following corn, eastern Iowa. Will broadcast spread along with potash the second we finish harvest. No till soybeans next spring.

I made a comment about glyphosate on one of your videos in the spring and then forgot to respond back to your response. I have seen a few guys have success terminating cover crops with a crimper 2 or 3 days before planting and then crimping again right before planting. I would imagine the main concern there is compaction from running equipment through the field multiple times in a small time window. Maybe crimping in the direction you want to plant a few days before planting and then crimping perpendicular to your first crimp right before planting. May not work in your context but this is one of the solutions I have been made aware of

Definitely an interesting idea and one worth taking note of. Thank you for sharing! We did have a big patch of mature marestail in one field. Thought I was going to have to spray them. Crimped and planted it, came back a couple weeks later and most of them were dead. I was very surprised.

Episode 115 of the regenerative agriculture podcast has some good info about cover crop termination from minute 34 to minute 42. One thing the guest said is that they have more success terminating high biomass cover crops with a double roller crimper where one chevron roller is right behind the other. He said he does not have to spray at all if he uses a double roller setup. I think he also mentioned in an emergency to run a flail mower over cover crops to terminate if roller crimping doesn’t work. I’m excited to see your progression to zero herbicide use!
