It normally takes 30 days from the time you upload an album of original music to be released. If the cover license process takes 2 weeks, does that add an additional 2 weeks to the release schedule? Would it then take six weeks for the cover album to be released?

My original releases tend to take around 1 week on average. Covers usually 1-2 weeks. But it can vary.

This is a similar process which I use for my distributor (which is free for me, but disadvantage is I can't release my music in 5 countries) so maybe if I earn a bit more money- I might consider changing distributors

Yeah, streaming of cover songs is really not a big money maker unless you’re getting a ton of streams. You gotta do it for the love!

What will happen if you did not continue the yearly subscription on DK? are your songs automatically get remove? is that going to have a conflict on the license?

Yes, if you don't have a DistroKid subscription you can't pay for the yearly license fee either so your song would be removed.

@@PeteJohnsMusic will that be a problem on license? I heard some license have these sort of duration availability and download counts. I'm not sure about DK license since I haven't tried any release in my lifetime. because I don't think I can monitor the duration and download count of a cover track if ever I would happen to release one. I'm a bit hesitant if I stop paying for the annual fee it might get a problem on license. I also want to ask if they removed it on stores, assuming it's not deleted on your distro account.. do you need to get another license to re-release the album? or do I need isrc and re-sub?

Thank you for this video, I have a question: I have a piano channel and upload piano covers, I get copyright claim but it has no effect on the channel/video, the problem is in the audio info below the description (Song name, Artist name, Liscence etc..) there's someone else's name and not even the original artists' name. How to fix that so I can get my name there instead or remove the song info please ?

Hey there. Sounds like content OD is finding and flagging another version of the song. There’s no way to change this but it really doesn’t impact much.

Hey there. So, KZbin is completely separate to releasing music via DistroKid. So, you can just release as a video to any KZbin channel.

If you want to release it to Spotify, etc with a distributor you do. If you’re just sharing on KZbin or SoundCloud you’ll be fine.

Yes. The cover licensing is separate and is to pay the original artist and songwriter.

Thanks for video Pete, but you don’t make it any less confusing. Distro Kid is wrong - if sampling hadn’t been OK no hip-hop/rap music would ever be created. Also there is nothing wrong in remixes. To do remix you may use original stems from the author but that does not mean you may not use own tunes and mix them both similar what Rachel K Collier did with Mary Spender remix of Adele song. If you out remix on YT and it’s not taken down it means it’s legal. And I wish DistroKid and other similar services didn’t make it harder for users with such meaningless warnings as if when you try to do appeal on YT they threat you with closing the account

Hey there. Yes, it’s quite different for more established artists and labels. DistroKid use this approach to reduce the risk of newer artists getting in trouble with other artists by using samples without permission. People absolutely do remix and sample, but to get these sort of tracks released to all the streaming platforms requires careful assessment of what permission has been granted by the original artist. Just look at some of the law suits from original artist suing others for using their samples.

That’s generally more of a “remix”, and not really supported by DistroKid. It depends on how much of the original you’re using as to whether it will be against copyright. studiolivetoday.com/distrokid
