Lord willing, we will bring this long-forgotten truth to the attention of Christ's church; a truth that has been put aside for too long because of ignorance or improper handling of God's word. It is a saddening thing, that so many sisters are not proudly declaring their submission to Christ and the God-ordained roles of men and women through this symbol.

Hello Cynthia, thank you for your concern, but there are a few things I need to point out. First, God's law in the context of Galatians is referring to the Mosaic law (cf 5:2-3), that is not in the same category as commands such as those found in Matthew 18 and 1Cor 11. Second, one of the problems in Galatia was that some wanted to be justified by keeping that law (5:4). That is not what we are trying to do with head coverings. We believe this is a command to the church that we obey because we have been justified. We do this out of our love for God, not because we want to contribute anything to our salvation. Lastly, if New Testament commands belong to the same category as the Mosaic law, that you seem to be implying we should live "in freedom" from, on what basis could you hold to ANY of the commands from Christ or his apostles given in the New Testament? Should we set aside things like church discipline? I hope that is not what you believe, and I hope that this has been helpful to you.

Actually there is evidence in the text for head covering being cultural. First, 1 Corinthians 11 is the only text which even talks about head coverings, which is significant because it was not mentioned in letters to other cities, though women's dress was addressed, such as in 1 Tim 2. Second, Paul begins and ends the section about head covering by calling it a custom (v. 2, 16). It is a tradition which Paul encouraged the women in Corinth to adhere to as a symbol of a woman's submission to her husband and to the Lord. This submission is a timeless requirement, but the symbol of it may change from culture to culture and from time to time. Also, the whole point of this passage is that this was one of the ways people were creating disorder in Corinth... trying to draw attention to themselves by breaking cultural norms. Look at the context (10:23-33; 11:17-21). People do the same thing today by making church into a fashion show. When a woman showed up in the Corinthian church without her head covered it demonstrated a lack of submission because she was pushing the boundaries. Women in the church today might do the same by WEARING a head covering to church in order to draw attention to themselves. It's an issue of the heart. If a woman reads 1 Cor 11 and has the (wrong) conviction that she must wear a head covering, and that is her motivation for wearing it, she is not sinning, but neither are any of the other ladies who do not wear a covering. Also, in verse 10, it is the act of giving over authority to the man... the actual act of submission is what the grammar indicates the woman has upon the head, not a cloth covering. He makes a cultural connection when he says that nature teaches that men should not have long hair (v. 14). Every culture has different expectations for the length of men or women's hair. The Vikings considered it more manly to have long hair, but the Romans did not. Jewish culture was rather open about this; consider Samson, Absalom, etc... But what is unbiblical is for a man to dress femininely or women to dress masculinely, whatever that may look like in the particular culture (Deut 22:5). And v. 15 also calls the woman's own hair a covering for her.

Head covering had never even crossed my mind until recently as I started to investigate Christian traditions outside my own. It immediately struck me as endearing, modest and respectful of something divine - almost as if it captured a feminine beauty beyond anything I'd experienced in my culture.

Cynthia Hunter you’re taking that verse out of context. Firstly do you think Paul was a self contradicting hypocrite giving out God ordained ordnances to the church then telling people to be lawless? The letter by Paul to the Galatians was addressing the law of moses vs the gospel of Jesus Christ. The law of Moses was good, but it was a shadow and was temporary. Paul was telling the Galatians that you cannot be a part of two covenants. You can only have the new covenant with God through Jesus Christ and His gospel. When Paul speaks about the law he is talking about the law of Moses not the Law of Christ Jesus. We are not to be a lawless people. There is a law of Christ which we must follow. Woman is to veil her head when she prays or prophesies. Galatians 4:10-12 KJVS [10] Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years. [11] I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain. [12] Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am ; for I am as ye are : ye have not injured me at all. Paul was talking about people trying to observe Old Testament feast from the old covenant which was not for the gentiles, and is not meant to be done as if it were a law of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

This is such a wonderful video i have started to cover since a few days before 2018 Thanksgiving. It has been so wonderful seeing the changes around me men being more polite to me , holding the door etcetera and not leering. I have also seen that my relationship with God has grown stronger wanting to show him that listening to his commands are the most important thing! Also I've been wanting to dress more modestly and find myself on a regular basis wearing skirts and not pants and I have not worn pants for several weeks now because for some reason it had just made me feel like I was putting myself out there and I don't believe that's what should be done. So praise the Lord for this in which it has proven to me to be beneficial no matter how many family members disagree and no matter how many people turn me away I will always have God!!!

I grew up in the 90s and this is something I also distinctly remember in regards to my mother as well as other women I knew and would see around. I almost instinctively knew whether they were going to church or not depending on whether their head was covered or not, I didn't even know about 1 Cor 11, I was just a little kid, but it stood out as a very visible marker and many years later I think I can see the wisdom behind it. This tradition, today has almost wholesale been completely lost within the American Protestant church specifically which is somewhat disheartening.

I am re watching this for encouragement. I am the only woman in my church who covers her head. I am consistent in church but not consistent in every day life. I don't think this will ever be part of the Christian community again for various reasons. Yet, I want to be faithful to this conviction that God has given me. So, the only way to get support is to watch KZbin videos and especially by pastors that I already follow. It's a real blessing to me that R.C. Sproul stood with this. If a woman refuses to cover her head before praying, then her head must be shaved. That is how serious a matter this is before Almighty God. 6" If a woman does not wear a veil, let her also cut off her hair; now if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her be veiled. 7 A man, indeed, ought not to have his head veiled, for he is an image and glory of God; but woman is a glory of man. 8 For it is not man who was made from woman, but woman was made from man. 9 And man was not created for woman, but woman for man. 10 For this reason the woman ought to have authority over her head, because of her guardian angels." 1 Corinthians 11:6-10 (MontgomeryNT)

I’ve been able to just walk with Christ so much more in unity because of this amazing tradition, that sadly ended for most church’s. I think that it’s so important that when people from the church read verses unpopular with our culture like 1 Corinthians 11, that we study it. And put God’s word over what we feel knowing God’s plans are far better than our own.

Amen! Verses 5 through 7, as well as verse 13, of 1 Corinthians 11 use a form of the Greek word for "veiled", κατακαλύπτω katakalupto; this is contrasted with the Greek word περιβόλαιον peribolaion, which is mentioned in verse 15 of the same chapter, in reference to "something cast around" as with the "hair of a woman … like a mantle cast around". These separate Greek words indicate that there are thus two headcoverings that Paul states are compulsory for Christian women to wear, a cloth veil and her natural hair.

In 1 Corinthians 11:16, Paul responded to any readers who may disagree with his teaching about the use of headcoverings: "But if one is inclined to be contentious, we have no other practice, nor have the churches of God." This may indicate that headcoverings were considered a standard, universal Christian symbolic practice (rather than a local cultural custom). In other words, while churches were spread out geographically and contained a diversity of cultures, they all practiced headcovering for female members.

Psalmist No such custom as for women to uncover their jaír let alone in iklesia. The newcomers to the faith were unsure as what to do. They were new to the customs. The men and women often covered their heads. The men would uncover their heads to teach and the new women were confused as to weather they should uncover theirs also when they taught. Also, the covering for women was to keep men from being distracted from their beauty as God was to receive all the glory and the women,s hair was their glory. So in iklesia they were being taught to keep their heads covered while the men were to uncover to teach and pray in front of the iklesia.

Definitely the tight jeans and tights are not modest and think about it, even pagans at work don't want you wearing those at most jobs, why would you wear them as a christian? YOU have to teach out of the Hebrew and Greek manuscripts. Christ is that authority, this passage is so simple, its speaking spiritual. How can anyone listen to this?? Why wont anyone listen, it is not a custom, not cultural, just shows that people don't study from the sources rather they would study from the product only. The head covered has zero to do with anything on her head or hair, the covering is Yeshua messiah, its talking about the fallen angels as it was in the days of Noah Jesus spoke of in the gospels, when the angels seduced the daughters of men, the (sons of God) that brought about the nephilim, naphi in the Hebrew, to keep their heads covered because they're coming back and the ministering spirits are watching, so are the fallen angels who were with Satan during his overthrow. Rev. 12 when Micheal kicks Satan out of heaven. The man to not have long hair is speaking that it would be a perverted act, angel and man intimately Paul said no, they're coming back for the daughters of men as Jesus said as part of how it was in the days of Noah, and will be and people are listening down these rabbit holes thinking it had to do with 💇 HAIR!!!!! 🤯😔 Its in the Bible, Yeshua told us all things. No excuse but to start today.

You also have to consider that a lot of us haven't grown up covering our heads. It's not like we all choose not to. You also have to consider the point of the situation in Corinth. Prostitutes were the ones who did intricate hairstyles to attract men. In Nigeria and Africa at large, intricate hairstyles are a staple of our culture. Always have been. Grown woman or child. For now I'm on the side that this has a good amount to do with cultural context. But if the spirit moves you to adopt this, praise God.

Wow. Good for him. Praise the Lord fornfaithful teachers. Such a good video. I felt called to cover my head about two years ago and feel so much more peaceful, calm, and content when I cover my head/ hair. I think modern "feminism" (which is extremely destructive to not only women but also to marraiges, children, families, and the church) and this message is very much needed. Here is a bit of what I know hopefully it will help anyone if they are interested? 1 Cor 11 is pretty clear that a woman should cover or veil her head in public worship. The word for covering in 1 Corthians 11:4, 5,6,7, 13, is the word, katakalýptō, from katá, "down, and kalýptō, "to cover"-cover down, to make appropriate (complete), i.e. to wear a veil. It is the root word used for the veil that separated the Holy of holies from the priests. But only in vrs 15, where Paul is giving an example from nature is a different word used, "but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering." This is different word from the others for "cover"= "peribolaion," that which is tossed around or a mantel that can be thrown around the shoulders and body (As in when a women tosses or throws her hair around). Cover in the first few verses of 1 Cor 11, should really be translated veil as that is the proper Greek word used. This is where we get the English saying, "Let your hair down." Becuase during the "sexual revolution" women let their hair down out of their buns, uncovered their hair and shook it back and forth. Which is very alluring to man. If hair if the covering as some people say, can men be bald or take their hair off and on? No obviously not. This is why men take their hats off in church or at baseball games, etc. Plus the veil or covering is it be a symbol of us coming under God's authority to the angels. And since all women have hair, that is not a symbol. We put a covering or veil on our head as a symbol that we are coming under authority to remind the fallen, and not fallen angles that we are in obedient to God's order. (As Satan rebelled because he wanted more authority). Up until only the last two generations woman covered in Church. All of our grandmothers would have covered in church. This is why the Hutterites, Mennonites, Amish, the orthodox churches, a lot of African congratations, and Messiniac Beleivers, etc still cover their hair. Here's some verses in the OT about head covering. Hope these help. Isaiah 47:1-2. Come down and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground without a throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans! For you shall no more be called tender and delicate. Take the millstones and grind flour, "put off your veil", strip off your robe, uncover your legs, pass through the rivers. (So as we can see, even virgins were to keep their heads covered and save their hair for their husbands. Otherwise it is like they are showing all their nakedness). Numbers 5:18. Then the priest shall stand the woman before the LORD, "uncover the woman’s head," and put the offering for remembering in her hands, which is the grain offering of jealousy. And the priest shall have in his hand the bitter water that brings a curse. Also Genesis 20:16 says in the Hebrew Then to Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver; indeed this is "a covering for her eyes" (to put back on her wedding covering) you before all who are with you and before everybody.” Thus she was rebuked. From what I understand In Genesis 24:65. Rebekah covers herself because the bridal price has already been paid. 2 vrs later we see Isaac take Rebekah bright away into his tent. There was no wedding ceremony. Her covering herself was an outward show of her marriage to Isaac. Since they were married he was allowed to take her right away into his tent and "uncover" her.

I often hear christians reference that “we’re under grace” which is true, but the “freedom” many feel they have under grace, seems to stray them away from the importance/beauty/sanctity of liturgy, rituals or practices. I don’t believe grace has freed us from these practices but frees us from putting our worth and salvation in such practices. Why did we let go of such God fearing traditions once grace came? It’s -now- that we can do such things out of joy and reverence and -not- enslavement. To model the creation story in any way is so beautiful. 😭

@alexanderrappe1589
@alexanderrappe1589 4 жыл бұрын

Hi Alexander, thanks for sharing your thoughts. We do take a different stance than you do and see the appeal to nature (15) and custom (2,16) as two distinct reasons why head covering isn't cultural. The majority of Biblical scholars have held that "verses 4-7 refer to a literal veil or covering of cloth" for "praying and prophesying" and verse 15 to refer to long hair of a woman for modesty.[4] Although the head covering was practiced by most Christian women until the latter part of the 20th century,[5] it is now a minority practice among contemporary Christians in the West, though it continues to be the normal practice in other parts of the world, such as Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Ethiopia, India, Pakistan, and South Korea" Read yourself rich folks at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_head_covering

The issue at Corinth was not whether long or short hair was an acceptable covering, but whether or not the head was covered with a veil or hat. This is proven by the following: ----"Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head" (v. 4). The distinction here is obviously not between short and long-haired brethren, but rather between men with covered and uncovered heads. Contentious sisters were provided with an alter native: either cover the head or be shorn or shaven ( v. 6). But if long hair were the intended covering, then the Apostle's alternative is meaningless. "Cover" ( -ed, -ing) in the A.V. disguises the fact that different words for "to cover" are used in the Greek text. The distinction between two of these, "katakalupto" and "peribolaion" proves that a veil or head covering, and not long hair is intended. These words are as follows: "Katakalupto" ( 'kata' = 'fully'; 'kalupto' = 'to cover up'), "to cover fully" ( Yg). This word occurs through out verses 5- 13 and is translated "veil" in the R.S.V.; Nestle and Marshall's "Interlinear Greek-English New Testament'' and many other versions. These translations make it plain that the issue relates to a head covering, not the growth of hair, long or short. "Peribolaion" ('peri' = 'around'; 'ballo' = 'to throw, cast'), "something cast around" ( Y g). The long hair of a woman is her glory - like a mantle cast around ( v. 15) .(8) But this is not to be displayed in the assembly of believers before the presence of God. The intended covering in the ecclesial meeting is the "katakalupto" ---- the head covering or veil. When Paul refers to the long hair given to the woman as her glory, he is drawing a parallel with what "nature" or common-sense suggests. This can be seen from the following: MAN long hair is degrading. WOMAN long hair is her glory. Therefore. a parallel is evident [natural] with the spiritual a man ought not to cover his head a woman ought to cover her head. 4. The mistaken interpretation (9) evident in the question results from reading verse 15 as if it were the conclusion of the argument rather than an additional appeal to common-sense by a parallel: what "nature itself teaches.".

Hi Aaron, in verse 15 Paul lets us know that it was the practice of every church (more on that here: www.headcoveringmovement.com/articles/why-head-coverings-reason-4-church-practice ) So he likely dealt with it in 1 Corinthians likely because he was asked about it by a letter from them. He said he wanted them to "understand" (v. 3) so they likely needed correction or clarification on this issue, especially since some in the congregation may have been contentious about it arguing that it was not required (v.16). The letters of Paul deal with specific issues, which is why you don't see it in more letters.

1 Corinthians 11 deals with the subject of a woman and a head covering. But why do so many people choose to ignore the concluding verse? Why study in subject if you ignore the conclusion? Verse 15 says: But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is giving her for a covering. Why should a woman insult God by placing a covering on top of the covering that He gave her? If she does not have long hair (of which there may be various reasons such as losing all her hair in cancer treatments) then she needs a man made covering, but only if her God given covering is absent. We have no right to just do what we want in matters that Scriptures have made very clear. Do not mock God's wonderful work and cover up that which He gave you for your covering and glory. It would be like a young man saying, I am not going to use my strength because God said the glory of young men is their strength. They certainly don't need to be prideful because of their strength, but that certainly doesn't mean they should not use it. It is not a matter of a woman being submissive, rather it is saying: God, your covering that you gave me is not sufficient, so I will use a man made covering to cover up your mistake.

I am not trying to start an argument, only interested in the truth of the matter. With that said, can anyone enlighten me on what 1st Corinthians 11:16 is saying? I always understood Paul to be saying in this verse that we shouldn't argue about head coverings as "we" nor "the churches of God" have this "custom". Not only does Paul call head covering a "custom", which to me says it is not a command of God, but he also wrote that the rest of the church does not do this. So if it were truly a command of God for women to cover their heads then why did Paul acknowledge and seem to accept that the rest of the global church did not follow this practice. To me these verses speak of various things, but Paul's point is concluded by verse 16, where he appears to reaffirm that head coverings is a cultural custom not a command of God. For anyone who is willing to help provide insight into this, I thank you.

Fascinating how men love scriptures when it pertains to women. Putting rules on women has always been a blessing for many men. Many religions believe in the head covering more than in the blood of Jesus. And seeing it so vividly in the Slavik culture, it’s truly sad. It’s like keys into heaven. Cover your head woman, and all your sins are forgiven! Faith saves not works. There is a reason God torn that veil in half when Jesus died. Our only hope is Jesus and our forgiveness is only through His blood. I’m saying this because many religious groups find these “substitutes” to holiness. As if a rag on your head cleans the dirt off your soul.

Some have taken issue with the fact that the Greek word used for covering in verse 15 (περιβόλαιον) is a different word than the form of the word used for veiling/covering in verses 5-7 and 13 (κατακαλύπτω), the latter of which means "to cover wholly" or "to veil". Moderator of the General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland, John W. Keddie, contended that if simply any hair were the covering Paul was talking about, then verse 6 would read "For if the women have no hair on her head, let her also be shorn", rendering the passage to be nonsensical.

Head Coverings 'Now I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I delivered them to you. But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God. Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head, but every wife who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since it is the same as if her head were shaven. For if a wife will not cover her head, then she should cut her hair short. But since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her head. For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man. For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. That is why a wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman; for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman. And all things are from God. Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a wife to pray to God with her head uncovered? Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him, but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering. If anyone is inclined to be contentious, we have no such practice, nor do the churches of God. ' 1 Corinthians 11:2-16

Ive been covering for several weeks now. After reading 1 Corinthians i felt a conviction to do so. And honestly i love it. There is a biblical hierarchy and im not ashamed to show my submission to Christ or my husband for that matter. I think feminism is garbage and destroying the family and i truly believe that's why so many are either against it or like me, had no clue that this was tradition for women in many if not all cultures, not all that long ago. I wear a head cover daily whether im just running errands or going to church or at home cleaning. I want to be more devout and follow God's word entirely to the best of my ability. This is an easy one to follow and i have no shame on doing so. My hair is long (almost to my waist) and ive heard others say that's all i need but I dont get that interpretation ehen i read Paul's letter to the church of Corinth and i dont understand why some are so adamantly against what other women choose to do or how other women choose to follow. I dont believe im in any kind of wrong for wanting and choosing to wear a head covering and it drives me crazy when others tell me i dont need to wear one. My heart says otherwise.

I am a follower of Jesus Christ, and by the grace of God I live in a country with the literacy rate is above 95%, and even before you could get the Bible free on your smart phone, in the country I live in you could go buy a complete one at Walmart for five dollars. As a result and once again by the grace of God, I’ve read the Bible covered cover between 50 and 60 times, and one of the things I did not get out of it was that I needed RC‘s book to understand what I was reading. As I’ve said before, I have no problem with the doctrines of God sovereignty calling election. I believe in these things as much as any of these men on this panel. My problem is, and it could be my imagination, though I don’t know why I would naturally think this but, every time I stop to listen to a so-called Neo Calvinist they come across as arrogant and grumpy. Corinthians 11verse 6 is the key verse. If a woman has no covering while assembling, or praying, then her hair should be cut off. So hair and the covering cannot be the same thing. Indeed, this is proven by the man not to have a 'covering' on his head when praying to God. If hair was the 'covering' then he would have to cut his hair off each time before praying, or of course, be bald.

The original Greek wording in 1 Corinthians 11 about covering the head never says veil or anything pertaining to fabric. That chapter explains God has an order. God ➡️ Man ➡️ Woman. And to symbolize the woman is being submissive, she should cover her head. Verse 15 “But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.” Her HAIR is her covering given to her by *nature* There’s the creation reference. So think about it, only cults require women to cover their heads: Islam, Hindus, Amish, Mennonite & some Catholic sects. I am a Christian woman & scripture says my long hair is my covering to reflect I submit to Gods order. 💜

I am a firm believer in head covering, and am rather new to it...I am struggling, however, with certain teachings that state that women should cover at all times, (as opposed to only in the assembly), the reason being because we are to pray without ceasing ( if we live a lifestyle of abiding in Messiah, we are in essence praying without ceasing). But isn’t this mandate from Paul also for men.? Aren’t men also to pray without ceasing? And if that is true, and it is, then are we saying that men should never cover their heads? Men should never wear caps, hats, kippahs ( as some Messianic Jewish men do?) ... It would help me to have clarity on this.

That’s a good point about men never covering their heads at all. Ha! Hats for men, until recently, were a sign of status and their profession. Removing the hat was an act of humility. Christ died with his head uncovered. I cover often, mostly, practically with a hat. I don’t think you have to be over the top by keeping your head covered every single minute. I think it’s more a requirement in public worship. Back in the day proper ladies always wore a hat and, in ancient times, covered their heads with a veil, to show that they were married. Dr. Michael Heiser had a very good explanation of these verses. He mentioned that hair, at that time, was considered part of the reproductive system. ... so for fertility reasons, women were supposed to have long hair and the hair was considered part of their reproductive system so they would keep it covered. Men were supposed to have shorthair because long hair would interfere with their virility.

The distinction you have to make is this: Are you covering your head for spiritual or for practical reasons of utility? You can run around with a construction hat at a construction site all day, and it won't taint your manliness. But you can't wear a veil and pray for even one minute. The take away is this: You don't have to worry about headwear and hats that are worn for practical reasons

The larger problem is not women worshipping without a head covering, but the lack of submission manifested in the marriage. Both egalitarianism and complementarianism promote contention against patriarchal headship. Correcting a contentious wife is like trying to stop the wind or grasp oil in your bare hand. A husband cannot count n the church for support, but rather the church will enable and support rebellion in a wife by condemning the husband’s leadership and love. The worship practice is unscriptural because the life practice is unscriptural. The church has been loathe to correct feminism n the church and thereby undercutting the structure of the home. Husbands are generally condemned as tyrannical by the church for the practice of loving headship and then condemned for abdication of responsibility when they don’t. IOWs - in the eyes of the church the husband is the root cause of his own sin and his wife’s sin. This acquiescence to feminism places false blame on men and robs women of a needful admonition toward repentance. Nurturing feminine rebellion the church is reaping a harvest of covenant breaking and become less masculine just when masculinity is most needful.

15But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. Clearly here we see that a women's overing is her long hair. For if a man have long hair it is to his shame. Again, it is hair Paul is talking about. Puting a cap on or making a scarf your overing, and it makes you feel more in submission to the Word and your husband, then do that. But i am surprised the great man of God missed these verses in the only chapter that deals with this. As a whole, we need to look to Peter when it declares to us that our adornment should be a meek and quiet Spirit, a life in faith and love, trusting our father explicitly in and for everything. And being respectful and honoring our husbands.

The covering is the woman’s hair. The hair only, NOT a cloth, hat or veil. The issue was with woman that shaved their heads not covering their head with a veil. Read it for yourselves and quit letting ppl lead you down the wrong path or erroneous worship. Paul was referring to how women of the day wore their hair. 1Cor11:6, shorn or shaved hair is contrasted with a woman being "covered." Vs15 makes it CLEAR that the subject is HAIR: "But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her for a covering."

@@headcovering Well some contend Paul required women to wear veils because it was the custom of the day for women to wear veils in public places of worship. This is NOT true! Let's get our facts straight. Smith's Dictionary of the Bible article "Veil" gives us the answer. "In ancient times, the veil was adopted only in exceptional cases, either as an article of ornamental dress or by betrothed maidens in the presence of their husbands, especially at the time of the wedding or women of loose character for purposes of concealment Gen 38:14- But generally speaking, women both married and unmarried appeared in public with their faces exposed, both among the Jews and among the Egyptians and Assyrians, as proved by the absence of the veil in the sculptures & paintings of their time period. It was NOT customary for women to wear veils in Paul's day. It is interesting to note that the fallen church in Rev 17, commands its women to wear coverings over shaven heads during worship. What Paul taught is this: as man is the head of woman, it is improper for men to have a covering in a religious service as a symbol of subjection (I Cor. 11:4). The only exception was long hair in the Nazarite vow, a token of subjection to God for a special time (Num. 6:5). Men are otherwise commanded: "Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?" (vs 14). Men wearing long hair, a fad with our younger generation, are effeminate & shall not inherit God's Kingdom! "But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her HAIR is given her as a covering" (vs 15). Notice! Paul speaks of LONG HAIR as the "covering," or veil. The Greek word for "covering" in vs 15 means "veil." See the margin of the KJV. So the covering is not some hat, or piece of cloth. Paul does not say that women must wear something over their head. Instead, he says: "Doth not even nature itself teach you, that if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her, for her hair is given her for covering." Because "long hair" is mentioned, some are afraid to cut their hair at all. The text doesn't read uncut hair; it reads only "long hair." Long hair is an indication that a woman is willing to be in subjection to a man, and that she acknowledges the special need for protection by angels - beyond the ordinary protection which angels give to men (vs 10). Hair, cut long enough to look feminine and honorable, prob about shoulder length, or longer would satisfy the standard. If a woman wears her hair so short that it looks like a man's, then she ought to be shorn - shaven - the symbol of a fallen woman. To be "shorn" (vs 6) means to be closely clipped. Some small sects argue that any cutting or hair means to be shorn. This is also NOT true. Properly cut long hair is not shorn hair. There is NOT a Bible command anywhere against cutting hair within the length which looks feminine & honorable. Many women today are, however, wearing their hair too short. They are not allowing their hair to be "a covering" (vs15). It is a woman's long hair that is her covering not some piece of cloth to hide a short hair-do.

You can read from Gen to Rev nowhere does it authorize man to chg the Sabbath to Sunday! Ppl who observe xmas are not honoring Christ if it’s of pagan origins. He specifically forbids us to worship Him that way - Same goes for Easter, we are suppose to observe His ordained Passover, NOT Easter! Examine that!

Lydia kiteme I’m also thinking of joining an Orthodox church. My only thought is that you might try different ones. Some are very ethnic ( formed for recent immigrants) and some are more oriented to outreach. There is the OCA American Orthodox Church founded in Alaska by Russian missionaries in the 1700’s. And then the Greek and Russian branches that also have congregations here in the States. There is a whole other group the oriental Orthodox (rather than Eastern Orthodox) that are Coptic? I think!?

Deepest Silence I have also decided to wear a head covering after researching the Scriptures too! Us women need to be obedient and modest. Can I suggest a fellowship that follows Torah, or there is a great KZbin site called Truth Unveiled777 that is very accurate Scripturally and speaks a lot of your precious country. I looked up this link for you www.eliyah.com/fellowship/profile.php?usr_id=3635 and this one www.eliyah.com/fellowship/profile.php?usr_id=3643

@@QuestionThingsUseLogic why would you follow Torah if Salvation is by faith through Grace? Works comes as a result of obedience and so is following the commands but these things do not save you because only Jesus saves. We cant earn our way to heaven. Salvation is a free gift and not of works. So works is separate from Salvation. If you rely on your own works and merits to get you to heaven you are doomed because The word says that our works are filthy rags. Therefore if you rely on something else or yourself for Salvation and not Jesus then you will never make it to heaven. It is only by Jesus!

Corinthians 11:6 is the key verse. If she has no covering while assembling, then her hair should be cut off. So hair and the covering cannot be the same thing. Indeed, this is proven by the man not to have a 'covering' on his head when praying to God. If hair was the 'covering' then he would have to cut his off each time before prayers, or of course be bald........{;o;}

I gratefully concur with Sproul about head covering for believing women in the Christian gathering. Praying or prophesying (male or female) should be subjected to the oversight of the (male) elders. Women believers should speak in a feminine way, like all the prophetesses in the Old and New Testament times. They should not 'teach'. (Cf 1Cor14; 1Tim2). They should not admonish the present believers over their present sins, like Paul admonishing the Galatian Christians. They should rather encourage the believers, and invite unbelievers to believe in Jesus Christ. The Greek NT verb for teaching is didaskein (only male elders do this in the gathering) and the Greek NT verb for spreading the good news is evangelisein (all believers may and should do this).

Paul not only appeals to nature about the covering as Sproul points out, but Paul also appeals to the spirit realm, "because of the angels." Everyone who teaches Paul is addressing coverings because of the Corinth culture is plain wrong, even if there was that cultural background to Corinth (which is a dubious starting point anyway: historians beg to differ if a) there were actually temple prostitutes at Corinth and b) there was any head shaving going on.) What is up for debate is :was it a first century cultural issue (not a Corinth culture) that Paul addresed ((yes/no) , is it an eternal principle as R C Sproul points to (yes/no) and is it still applicable and glorifying to God (yes/no?) (See 1 Corinthians ch10v31 )

@@frikandelthaisaus well i know what it says but you have to look at the original words in the language that the text is written in and youll understand it. In verse 4 it says men not to pray or prophesy with their heads covered. So if we take what Paul says about women if they dont want to cover to be shaved, then every man should be shaved as he is not to pray with his head covered.

I love RC Sproul. But I will have to disagree with this. I have been reading this chapter for maybe 2 hours now and decided to see what he thought. After reading, i pray the understanding I got was from God. 1 corinthians 11 is about worship and how we honor God is the roles he gave us. Its started out by saying Christ is the head, man then woman and the head of Christ is God. Vs 4. If u are out speaking and its not under the authority of God u dishonor God. Vs 5 women should also know who is their head and act accordingly, otherwise they my are just like the harlots in the street. The tradition of head shaving was a symbol of dishonor as we get from the NT writing. Vs 10 if the woman is under devine inspiration then her head is now Christ, and she is now responsible for honoring what ever she is given by angels to say or do. As we know the holy spirit was poured on of sons and daughter in the last days, which started when Jesus assended. We know women were indeed preaching and teaching back then. Vs 11 then says but even under this inspiration a man is not without the woman and the woman is not without the man. Meaning she should not overstep her boundaries, there is a matter hierarchy and the woman is below the man even while under inspiration. Vs 16 clearly saying if any man seem to be CONTENTIOUS, WE HAVE NO SUCH CUSTOMS, NIETHER THE CHURCH OF GOD. He was using this issue of head covering to adress 2 ideas. However we should know if these things will cause contention, God is not about that life. Thats not a custom that adds or takes away from our salvation. What will is if we forget the order that God created. Christ who gives us the ultimate covering. Man who is the head of the woman, who also covers and protects her and then the woman. And it doesn't matter if u are inspired by God this order does not change, it was that way from creation and so will it be.

No Sir, you are certainly not the only one that endorses the head-covering for Almighty God's humble and faithful true "Daughters of Sarah". Any conscientious Christian "Worth their salt" will endorse it without question. The issue at Corinth was not whether long or short hair was an acceptable covering, but whether or not the head was covered or veiled.

@Psalmist "Is it right for a woman to pray in public without covering her head? 14-15 Doesn’t even instinct itself teach us that women’s heads should be covered? For women are proud of their long hair, while a man with long hair tends to be ashamed. 16 But if anyone wants to argue about this, all I can say is that we never teach anything else than this-that a woman should wear a covering when prophesying or praying publicly in the church, and all the churches feel the same way about it. Her hair was given to her for a covering and is a glory unto a woman and there needs to be a difference between man and woman. God created us that way. Angels are created masculine that's why "Because of Angels" is added. So woman must differentiate between man and Angels in their appearance. A lot of words but completely missing the point and it shows big preachers don't read their Bible carefully.
