This is one long stream of "one of the games of Magic of all time" over and over again, man has unlocked access to a secret meta I've never seen
@BigQ522 ай бұрын
CGB's advice is revealing the true secret to Rarran. That BO1 is just is a mess of randomness and matchup checks, and ranking up is mostly about bashing your head against it for enough time.
@ski90192 ай бұрын
This is true about most online competitive games. With time and effort you can generally climb. Sure there are some skill checks as you get into the higher tiers but time and effort will place you above the bulk of people.
@domotoro35522 ай бұрын
I wouldn’t even consider it a secret REMOTELY, before arena bo1 magic was for true multiplayer formats (commander) and kitchen table almost exclusively. this is for a reason.
@BigQ522 ай бұрын
@@ski9019 Certainly you get more skilled at things with time and effort, but that's not my point. I'm talking about how much skill actually contributes to your 'rank'. You might hear a fighting game player refer to two characters as a 6:4 matchup, meaning if equally skilled players fight each other, one character would win 60% of the time, and the other 40%. BO1 magic simply has a lot more 7:3 and 8:2 matchups than BO3 (or most competitive games).
@SDREHXC2 ай бұрын
@@ski9019you missed the entire point. Best of one is largely considered a joke because a lot of the stupid variance that is completely out of your control in best of one is shored up by best of three and the virtue of having a side deck. Best of three removes a large portion of the bashing your head against the wall until you climb aspect unless you are legitimately stuck at the rank you deserve.
@JonaxII2 ай бұрын
Yeah, and that's why aggro decks are better for ranking up - you may not have better win rate, but who cares, you get to bang your head against it faster.
@egor68492 ай бұрын
First, want to say that it’s really nice to see you enjoying magic and getting better at it. Second, and I know it’s a bit of a meme, but I would genuinely recommend you to try playing BO3, maybe when you get to diamond, if you are worried about loosing ranks. And I’m not saying that because “it’s how it is supposed to be played” or whatever, but because it might just address some of the gripes you have with the game: 1. You like control more and control decks benefit heavily from sideboarding, more so than any other archetype. 2. You said that you would rather win games consistently, instead of minimising the time spent on each game. And BO3 is much better suited for that than BO1. 3. You also said that you don’t like not knowing what you are going against, again, BO3 helps with that, you know exactly what to mulligan for in games 2 and 3. 4. It would also help with specific matchups a lot, just from this stream, having access to sideboard would massively increase your chances against those off-meta combo decks you faced at the beginning of the stream, 4 leylines of sanctity would be really good against discard and you can have those lockdowns in sideboard to hate the monored without having a card in the main deck that’s a bit awkward in some situations, because it hits your stuff like beanstalks and tokens.

I feel like its worth pointing out that ranking up in best of 3 can be a lot easier if you know how to sideboard. Best of 1 can be very do or die, and youre way more prone to losing from a brick or something. In best of 3 you have second chances, and on top of that you can swap out your cards so you can better deal with whatever deck youre up against. Wins in individual games count toward your rankups as well. So if you win a match you get two points worth for example.
@ogolthorp2 ай бұрын
Yeah I think BO3 has the player with the bigger edge winning more often. So if you feel like you’re a better player or have a strong deck for the meta BO3 would be best.

I was saying how psyched I was for this stream in the comments on the last few, it was so good, it was so nice seeing Rarran go from the depths of below YGO to "I love life right now need one more" I mean he's going to need a second mortgage but that's small potatoes. Edit: Rarran did surprisingly well in his first ever draft going like 2/3 or 3/3 or something like that after his 10th game ish. It would be nice to see CGB and Rarran do this same type of stream and draft, draft is a way better way of building a collection, getting mythic in limited is near unpossible unless you're playing a ridiculous amount but it might rival this grind so that could be a cool new arc. Unfortunately standard rotation is 3 years and soon a random 5 year or something foundation set and for Rarran to play around on Arena like he does on Hearthstone he's going to need to build up his collection and wildcards significantly so next set release it might be a good time to start drafting to get that collection in the bank. Also Rarran is playing for the enjoyment of the game but every win and loss feels stagnating, should be playing constructed events maybe or limited events that way you get small rewards for your time so you always get that dopamine hit of making progress. If Rarran plays at this same level he'll go 50% or better I'd imagine. Imagine Rarran got 20 play points through 20 7 win finishes, won the qualifier weekend and paid his mortgage off.

@doublethomas84152 ай бұрын
@@sidneypowelstock6812 Exactly that. The things that you need to kill, it kills. When they pump it doesn't fizzle out like Cut Down does and saves you at least two life. Same can be said about a 2/2 creature that got a counter on it or whatever too. Disfigure never fizzles or is completely dead whereas Cut down can be and rots in your hand. It's much better against mono red as Cut Down still does damage to you because they get to ping your life based on the creature that dies power and Disfigure makes it 0 most of the time. Disfigure is clearly the better one black pip removal spell right now and it's not close with how much life it saves you, especially in BO1.
