It's fascinating how MTG players develop strong deck type preferences and "enemy" deck types based on their own personalities. I do it too. I like to have a lot of decisions that actually matter, so I tend to play midrange decks that react to what the opponent does. I hate it when someone uses a bunch of blue counterspells, because they are saying "I see you made a clever plan and now you can't use it." I don't enjoy playing mono red because the correct play is too obvious and the deck mostly plays itself.

I get people not liking UW control but I don’t understand they saying it’s easier. As someone who plays everything and usually favors midrange, control is indeed more complicated to play. Plays are never obvious and they are always very ambiguous as we saw ash experience in this video. Even for a great magic player like her it’s tough choice after tough choice most of the time. I personally tend to dislike more “mindless prone decks” that either consist of throwing whatever you get into the board and attacking on curve (Mono red agro) or just play by themselves with no interaction (mono blue, milling decks, poison proliferate, etc). Some Agro players hate when I say agro decks are easier to play than control but I don’t even think that’s a bad thing.

As someone who played since 1994 I will confirm aggro was MUCH harder to play than control until post Oddyssey. You want a challenge? Take some taiga’s and Unlimited, Arabians-Legends cards and try to beat The Deck. You get kird ape, lightning bolt, vice, wheel, and erhnam. They get mana drain, plow, mirror universe, and moat.

In general, being reactive means you need to understand what you're playing against, so I would generally agree. However, there is an ease to being able to almost always play at instant speed that also puts your opponent in the classic overcommitment -> boardwipe vs. undercommitment -> draw cards conundrum with counterspells also in the mix to snipe plays that boardwipes don't address. Blue Control almost always has inevitability, so most of the time it's just "don't die" and you don't have to put a lot of thought in ending the game, just making it so that your opponent can't win. Midrange probably has the largest share of interesting combat decisions (which/how many blockers to leave against other creature decks, navigating board stalls especially with Planeswalkers in the mix, whether to attack into a possible Wandering Emperor) and also probably has to try the hardest against Control because it's a lot harder to tempo Control out than Aggro even though you're generally more resilient to sweepers, but it also depends on the build/tools that the Midrange player has. Some Midrange decks just play like a bigger Aggro decks that are just looking to curve out a little later and stronger. I do agree that linear decks are the easiest to play (as there aren't a whole lot of decisions being linear), but sometimes when linear decks play against other ones, it can get tricky to navigate. For example, sometimes the Mono-R matchup can get really grindy because of all the burn spells being pointed at creatures instead of the face, but that's more of a Bo3 thing especially in postboard games.
