Back in 2020, I was laid off from work and watched enough CGB live streams that my fiancée started listening to The Midnight. Tonight, my wife and I saw The Midnight live, and on her birthday. Standard is actually amazing right now, if you're not playing Arena B01. It's actually funny just how huge of a disparity there is, because standard B03 is the best it's been in years, while standard B01 is the opposite.

Standard is arguably in the best spot it's ever been in. In the entire history of MTG. But Bo1 never has been, and never will be Standard. Bo1 was literally designed for "people who don't want to put in the time for Bo3 and instead want a fast and truncated experience." (verbatim quote). You are willing choosing to play the mode designed to have short games, and then complaining the games are too short. Do you not see the problem with that?

Crokeyz actually had a really good idea about how to fix standard BO1. You dont even need to ban anything. But just remove the hand smoothing algorithm, so mono red and other aggro decks are forced to play more lands, otherwise they could get hands with 0 lands. If you remove that, it will basically be a faster BO3. But i dont think WOTC will do this change, because a large audience enjoys this type of gameplay i suppose.

@@erfarkrasnobay because in Bo3 you can keep 6-10 removal spells in your sideboard and crush them in games 2 and 3. Their strategy only works if you have to have a deck that also handles longer matchups.

No bc, to make a hyperbolic comparison, why is it turning into Yu-Gi-Oh? Games are all ending by turn 3, players are spending forever on their turns to have like a 20-chain combo go off, high mana cards might as well not exist now unless you have a way to get them out QUICKLY besides regular mana costs, bc it takes too long otherwise in this meta. And if you’re not fighting mono-red aggro? It’s some form of a control deck. So yeah, the meta is quite literally the definition “Fun to play, HATED to play against”, and has just cut out a lot of deck options you can use because of how oppressive they are. You’re basically pigeonholed into picking from a handful of deck(archetype)s, most of which run hard control, only for the games you play to last 2-3 turns. Yeah, you’re right, it’s not fun. EDIT: sorry you got my rant 😂

Play Bo3. Bo1 has devolved into 1-minute games because that's what Bo1 was always designed for. People with no attention spans who just want to pull a slot machine and hope to get lucky. You can't willingly choose to queue into the "fast games" mode and then complain about the games being too fast.

If you have blue mana, then the only one-mana removal spell that really works is Into the Flood Maw. Consider replacing the Smites with those. And since Flood Maw can also bounce other permanents, you'll need to run fewer of the Vanishes.

Temporary Lockdown is the most important card against aggro. I kept on playing 4 Get Lost and 4 Soul Partition for spot removal, one Mana removal is totally overrated. 🙂

I use Vanish Into Eternity in Timeless. It is an integral part of my UW deck. You need it to exile the one ring and all the garbage enchantments early on. Late game it becomes spot removal.

CGB I know that your hatred of mono-red runs deep. But consistently playing best-of-1, a format that inherently encourages fast decks like mono-red to be played more often, is probably not the best format for you to play if you want a real picture of the standard metagame. Best of 3 is, and always will be, the real standard-defining format. It is in paper magic, and it is in arena. Standard is fun and there are a lot of innovative and creative decks in best of 3. They just don't see play in bo1 because everyone knows they'll only run into mono-red all day.

This mono red deck can eat all the excrement. I wish they would do some best-of-one bans to reduce the rate this deck appears in arena. It isn't such a factor in best-of-three, but today 75% of my games have been against monored leyline (or red-green leyline splashing for snakeskin veil). Even playing 9 or 10 two-mana or less removal spells isn't enough to stop it sometimes. And taking any more than that makes it all but impossible to have my own game plan. I think I preferred playing against monored Embercleave in Eldraine standard.

you really have to explore a dimir deck man, i have one with overlords, creeper, the cat, ertai, the rogue that draws cards and combos with ertai , kaito, liliana, I even added a tinybones and yeah you need some luck with the draws but the deck has so much card draw and enough selection, that unless the shuffler really really dislikes you, you usually find that thin line to walk towards victory and it definatly is the deck that lets me enjoy the current meta. But yeah just mix all the most annoying dimir cards in a mix and you get to enjoy the topdeck that turns it around and let's you climb outta certain demise... och I also run three steps , 3 negates and 2 essence thingys because yes i am blue, and the match makers matches you far less with cave these days in my xp

I get it. I quit playing due to mono red. I play control. I only want to play BO1 standard and mono red is unfairly overpowered, too fast, and kills you in a few turns if you don’t have a god hand. I honestly think you could have come up with a wayyyy better blue white deck then the one you fielded today. More smites. First off. Card advantage package feels... confusing. 1 quick study? I feel like 2 or none. 1 spell gyre? again feel like could have more. Something like 3 quick study 2 gyre one scrutiny (could be 2 scrutiny 1 gyre as well) + one 5 mana pretend teferi seems better. plus you get the walker to close games out. Since it's automatically 2 threats in 1. Just don't waste time with deduce play study instead. I know deduce us good but you have to pair it with something more efficient like deluge. It open up more spots for interaction this having a more powerful card advantage suite Exorcise seems strictly better than vanish. Yes it's sorcery but 2 mana. I think this card is an answer blue white needs to play rn

If you're not playing brainless red or Bo3, everyone's love is being tested (or already stopped playing). It's sad, but Bo1 isn't Wizard's focus, and we're suffering for it... 14:59 This is why Commander should be easier to record. Even Brawl, which was CGB's escape from this shithole is now about as bad as Standard Bo1. Commander, which is the format he loves playing, is hard to record. And, of course, a lot of people wouldn't watch, which would mean less money! Can't wait for the next expansion to have more 1-2 mana red Haste creatures, and maybe sprinkle in some 1 mana +3/+3. c:

3 deck metagame atm, with room for variance in a few different directions! (lotus combo beats phoenix but loses to red UW control (mostly) beats red but loses to phoenix phoenix beats control but loses to combo) and then a bunch of stuff in between, but this is a reading of bo3 you're still going to see red prowess decks so if that's what really bothers you, you won't like it.
