Fun fact, milling your opponent to death was not even the only way millstone was played. There was a messed up mill stone field of dreams deck. So field of dreams says the top card of all players library is always revelaed, and you use millstone to control both yours and opponents draw. Try winning when all your good draws go into the graveyard, and the same happens to ops bad draws. Some versions even used Sylvan library to both hide their draws and have perfect info what they mill from their own deck.

You and Rarran have THE best dynamic for these "player of other game rates my game's cards" videos. Absolutely love them to pieces. Rarran knows just enough about the game to make genuine educated guesses, and CGB doesn't overplay the mind games aspect so much to ruin the joy of the actual concept, while still occasionally playing small tricks here and there to keep things interesting. You guys are great at this, extremely looking forward to every set you guys cover together going forward.

I mean serra's sanctum is weaker because it's white and enchantments, but it's still a broken land. Tolarian academy is just top 5 lands ever printed though with ease, used to laugh when people would say 'oh maybe we can unban academy in legacy' around 2010-2012 when less artifacts were out, but it's like no the entire format devolves into academy mirrors particularly with the old legend rule back then just placing both academies in the graveyard if two were played on different sides of the table.

The cool thing (I think) about the lore of the set. While its about the brothers war, the theme of the set isn't the war itself, its of archaeologists finding relics and ruins of the war
@shadowfate05
@shadowfate05 10 ай бұрын
Wrong war you're thinking of. Antiquities does indeed have a bunch of archaeology digging up the remains of a war, but it's because the archaeologists (including Urza and Mishra as apprentices to Tocasia in their youth) were digging up the remains of the Thran civilization that destroyed itself in a civil war. They used a bunch of the Thran tech in their war
@christopherb501
@christopherb501 10 ай бұрын
@@shadowfate05No, that is what's right. This is based on historical findings and musings about the age of the Brothers, and of course it does mention the Thran as Thran remains are inextricable from their story.
@shadowfate05
@shadowfate05 10 ай бұрын
@@christopherb501 Honest question, can you point me to where it says that Antiquities is based after the war and is historians musing on what happened? The only thing I've found are descriptions of the set saying it's the story of the Brothers' War, and an archived FAQ from the Magic Storyline Team on the Wizards site from 2000 that says "Back during Antiquities, Urza was not a planeswalker, but an artificer in his 60's. As a planeswalker, he gained the ability to alter his appearance and so he appears - thousands of years later - as a much younger man." when asked how old he was and why he looks younger in recent sets. If he was an artificer in his 60s *during* Antiquities, doesn't that mean Antiquities takes place during the events of the Brothers War, not historians and archaelogists digging up and musing about the war?

1. Thopter was played from beginning - mostly combined with "unstable mutation" and "howl from beyond" in some BU decks 2. Colossus is bad. But players tried to make it work with "instill energy" 3. Millstone was OKish - but mostly to slow. In the ultra control decks juzam, serra or as you mentioned mishra's factory simply worked faster. But yes Millstone was the first sucessful win-con in these decks

One main advantage of Millstone is that most decks had a bunch of creature removal maindeck so it blanked 8 cards in the opponent´s deck. People were of course also playing Disenchants but there were at max 4 of them and there were plenty of other must-destroy targets for those.

I used to love just sitting there and reading over all these cards and looking at the art and the lore. I never actually had any Magic cards or played the game myself, but by reading the flavor text and looking at the art I was able to piece together the stories. I have a tremendous amount of fondness for old MtG cards and it's very interesting for me to see videos like this since I'm also looking at the actual game with very little experience.

29:46 Honestly, “not a dude dot deck” was my bread and butter in DTK standard. I realized the myth of a creatureless (almost) deck, and it turned “End Hostilities” into “Raigeki.” Citadel Siege made my board wipes into two-to-five-for-ones. I even ran Quarantine Field, look it up, it’s a meme for the dreamers. Edit: Oh. The reason I brought that up is that man lands (Shambling Vents), enchantments and artifacts (Myth Realized, Ojutai and Silumgar Monuments), and counter spells, card draw, board wipes, removal, and even a couple of extremely cheeky Narsets that ulted for the win quite often, all of which trigger myth to grow bigger, and let you hold up your mana (except the reloads and narsets, but rebound on a draw 4 is stupid), and only make your creatures into creatures when you know they won’t die (negate, scatter to the winds, dissipate until it rotated and I swapped in dissolve, even 4 of dispel in sideboard, etc.). My not a dude are not creatures unless I want them to put in work. I can clean up the stalled board (can’t attack with my threat of activation on not a dudes), then clean up with a 7/7 or bigger than only costs 1 mana to animate, that I played on turn one.

Yeah, it’s like in Hearthstone where some years battlecry minions were the real meta and in others pure value shaped the meta around it. Like if Rarran did a video themed around dragon minions/spells in Hearthstone’s different years one would very quickly figure out if dragons were actually good in that particular year or not. (And then of course the final set of cards would be the current Wild Dragon Druid alongside some cards that in theory should be able to stop them)

42:05 my favorite story about one of these people was a random guy who joined our group of budget decks intending to just stomp us, he was having a great time controlling the board, using proxied fetches to go get proxied og duals while we're playing temples and guildgates (I don't have a problem with proxies but he didn't even check) he's just taking all the turns being really unpleasant. he then casts lavalanch on the other player that was doing the best for x = 25 I ricochet trap him so he targets his own face, mostly killing him and wiping his board, he died before his turn comes back around, packed up his stuff and sulked away, I felt great.

Running with Scissors is one of the most fun deckst to play. I made my own version, and it still manages to amaze people getting hit by a 5/5 flyng dude, or with an indesctructible land. :v

27:19 The way I’d explain this is that every permanent gets summoning sickness (unless it has haste), but that doesn’t stop you from activating its tap abilities unless it’s a creature. (In fact, the _Shandalar_ computer game had an option to make summoning sickness visible on all permanents.) So you can play a Factory and immediately tap it (for mana or to pump an Assembly-Worker), but you can’t turn it into a creature and then tap it (except to pay a cost of another card through the act of tapping, rather than by spending the mana produced by the Factory’s own ability). Also, permanents regain summoning sickness when their controller changes, which is why spells and abilities that steal creatures until end of turn usually give them haste at the same time.

One interesting combo I found for Candelabra is that if you make it a creature with Ensoul Artifact, then have Ashaya, Soul of the Wild out, you can use its ability to untap _itself_. Then all you need is two lands that each tap for two mana and you have infinite mana as early as turn 6, possibly even less with a Sol Ring on board

I actually played an Ornithopter in my very first Magic tournament. It was in a mono black deck and I didn't quite have enough strong mono black cards, and I needed something to hold my Unholy Strengths and other buffs.

50:10 It's taboo to blow up *all* of your opponents' lands. Especially if you do it repeatedly, like with the Crucible lock, and extra especially if you don't have a way to win relatively quickly after doing it. But single-target land removal is absolutely essential in Commander because insanely strong lands like Gaea's Cradle are legal and that player will run away with the game if left unchecked.

One thing we have at ourgame shop is have specialized days. Fridays are typicially for drafts/prerelease evebts. But saturday is "No Cry" so expect some powerful commander decks (even CDH ones) to be played and if you lose, you cant "cry about it". Where as Casual Sundays are where you dont play decks with ridiculous combos and for beginners to learn. UNLESS your whole table is ok with it. So you know what youre getting into when you show up

I really enjoy this series, and though I’d never heard of him, Rarran is perfect for it. It’s fun to see someone who’s totally ignorant to Magic’s cards but also has a good background in the style of game evaluating these completely blind. A lot of us have gotten tunnel vision over the years, and it’s interesting to see the view of a sort of naive subject matter expert, so to speak. Unlike a lot of other people who have tried to hop on this bandwagon, he also a) *really* wants to do well and b) *really* hasn’t seen any of these. 😂 Last, you two actually seem to get along and enjoy it. P.S. I am so happy you did Sharahzad.

52:10 I once played against a guy who build a Saruman themed edh deck and had Urzas Tower as Isengard and Urzas Mine as the mines surrounding Isengard. When on player said he only needs Powerplat to assable tron, he said "Saruman didn't have a powerplant". He legit only played the two in the deck and not powerplant

I'll admit when I got into Magic the biggest thing I saw (both in art and power/toughness) was Krosan Cloudscraper. I still to this day have nostalgia for the card because of the Lil' Danny I was back then.

I really think this video is the best example of this subgenre of TCG content. Often times people guess right/wrong but they don't learn anything about the resource system in Magic or the speed/interaction of Yugioh. For example, someone might guess that Dark Hole was decent, but they don't learn that your deck often has in-archetype interaction.

12:43 No. Blocking doesn't tap a creature. It's just that you can't block while tapped, such as when you attacked last turn.

my friends group back in the day affinity decks and mono blue decks using tinker dominated. but since then i literally have most of my decks have strong elements that counter artifacts. cards like gorilla shaman, stony silence, kataki wars wage, meltdown, fracturing gust, pest infestation, steelbane hydra, shattering pulse. etc. to some extent i make sure to include some of these in my main decks or on my sideboard, sometime hybrid, where some artifact hate is in the main deck and some in the sideboard and if facing affinity then swap in more artifact hate. but some in the main board still gives me a chance to win on the first match.

talking about strip mine and blowing up lands in EDH, i put Wasteland in almost every deck. it's a phenomenal silver bullet to powerful utility lands, and i pretty much never use it to hit nonbasics that just tap for mana

Does candelabra not also just go infinite with most lands which can tap for at least 2? Since you can tap, use one to untap and float one?

I remember back in the day, Strip Mine was tapped for mana AND then sacrificed to destroy a land because it didn't expressly state you had to tap to sacrifice it. I'm pretty sure it's been changed so there's no confusion.

I'm not really a magic player, though I did play in high school, but in yugioh one of my favorite creators is MBT who's name originally came from his favorite mtg deck, Mono Blue Tron, so it is really neat to see the lands that are the namesake to it.

13:00 Slagmaw: 😢 It's funny how wildly Rarran overshoots how much he thinks these cards cost, but I think I get it. Ornithopter, which was $6.50, he heard as $650 so the baseline was absurdly high right out of the gate.
