Explorer is a nice bo3 ladder In an eternal format, bo1 is just too narrow with the fastest decks dominating, but in bo3 all decks have a variety of answers that an eternal format provides in the side board, so it gets much, much more diverse, interactive and fun

True, the issue is sometimes a game ends up lasting over 30 mins. I prefer bo3 but still play bo1 most of the time because of the time issue.

Eh I'm not big on explorer because (and this is a bit of hyperbole, but not much) because you play against Thoughtseize > Harvester > fable > Sheoldred, or Elves > Karn nonsense every game in Bo1, historic's best of one feels a lot of diverse to me.

Pioneer is an exile format. Some explorer players pack "destroy" removal and get punished for it. Try giving Dimir Control a go, its has cheap exile effects and feels really good

Rakdos Midrange is pretty gross, too. Greasefang is the most annoying to me. Mono G and Mono W are both really good. The Incarnation decks are good. Creativity is good. UW control is good. Lots of good decks which makes it hard to brew because the base deck quality you'll play is so high.

I like that he doing older formats but dislike that its explorer because its just a partial historic. I know the sole reason hes doing it is so that he gets more clicks from the hate alchemy crowd. I always loved how he used alchemy card in historic brawl because its a nice escape from the hate alchemy crowd.

@@retributin2849 Alchemy cards don't feel that busted in Historic Brawl because even if they're digital-only mechanics the power level is still about where the format is- they're not taking over the decks they're in. In normal Historic it feels like they _are_ the power level of the format and they _are_ taking over the decks they're in because you can play multiples 0.0

@@the_r4ts I really don't agree, alchemy cards are not that good and hardly dominate the meta, I rarely see those Crucias and Jarsyl deck and they aren't that broken. Crucias is cool and interesting. Though Jarysl is a bit much, though hes not that different to dreadhorde arcanist.

Hey CGB Love seeing the eternal content. It's a shame you didn't enjoy it. Explorer is easily the most spiky format on arena and the format is largely solved. Reid Duke did a video recently about pioneer and there are in his view only 15 viable pioneer decks, of which two are unplayable on arena (lotus field and phoenix). Even less are good in BO1 due to the lack of sideboards. Given this, I think explorer content has to be "how do I refine meta decks" not "how can I build new ones". You could have some fun with spirits or azorius control and tweaking them, but it won't magically make the format less stale. If you play explorer, you have to be prepared to grind against exactly the same decks for month on end. I think if you want variety, though, historic is definitely the format for you though. I did some analysis on one of my decks last month. Across 115 games with that deck, I played against 33 distinct meta decks and 16 jank piles. Only two decks, broke into double figures, izzet wizards (19) and rakdos mid range (10) and technically I think I'm lumping together two different mid range builds here (rakdos arcanist with lurrus and mostly 1 mana disruption vs. rakdos mid range with crucias, fable and seasoned pyromancer). The alchemy, modern horizons and bonus sheet cards make the format a whole lot more powerful and varied. Worth noting, Azorius control is also pretty good in historic, even in BO1. Divine purge is really good against 4 of the top 5 decks (Boros thopters, izzet wizards, azorius affinity, hammertime) and countermagic is great against charbelcher. I could definitely see you having some fun with that.

I just don't get the appeal of eternal formats when the meta diversity is relatively low. "prepare to grind against the same decks for months on end" = just miserable.

@@nottsfhj historic is really quite diverse. Explorer has a narrow meta, but historic has lots of viable decks. The combination of 1) anthologies 2) alchemy cards 3) bonus sheets mean that lots of really powerful cards come into the format and kinda balance each other out. The top decks in BO1 are charbelcher - no modern horizons or alchemy but uses charbelcher from brother's war Thopters - mostly powered by modern horizons cards Izzet Wizards - alchemy cards Hammertime - alchemy/baldur's gate cards Even then, the format has so many other decks in it it's rare to queue up against the same deck twice in a row. Yesterday I played 16 games 4 vs hammertime 2 x azorius spirits (which I barely ever encounter) then everything else was a one of: kethis combo, muxus goblins, mardu mid range, selesnya enchantress, azorius enchantress, izzet wizards, mono black, esper reanimator, devotion to green, rakdos mid range. Tell me that standard is more diverse than that. I've stopped playing it entirely because I cannot stand queueing into mono Red over and over. I think narrow metas help if you want to really hone your skills with a deck, as if that was a valuable life skill. Personally, I much prefer the anarchy of a wide open format.

Calling Explorer/Pioneer a "solved meta" and "stale" when a brand new deck (Neoform Atraxa) is literally stomping its way up the tier ranking over the last two weeks from literally not existing before is hilarious. Best of 1 is always going to gravitate towards curve-out-midrange piles, which is a problem with Bo1, not Explorer/Pioneer.

Explorer Bo1 is brutal. The tier 1 decks are either piles of blanket 1-for-1 interaction and 2-for-1 value (Mono-Blue Spirits, Rakdos Midrange, UW Control), aggro/combo decks which reliably kill on turns 3-4 (Greasefang, Boros Heroic, Mono-White Humans, Mono-Green Devotion), and Angels/2-4C Humans/3C Spirits all of which can make a dominant board state from scratch on turn 4 via CoCo. I've heard Bo3 is better, but honestly I think the real problem is that Thoughtseize, Collected Company, and Nykthos are all oppressive forces on the Explorer meta, even if they're ok in Pioneer.

That game versus Angels is why I never liked these style of games. It looks fun when you do the thing, but when you dont, it's just sadness and despair. Waiting to lose is not my style of play. I think that may be why -- he was probably looking for some variety. Going from stale meta to stale meta is even less fun when you thought you were going from stale meta to diverse meta.
