COVID-19 relief: Antonov An-225 landing at Leipzig/Halle airport (Germany)

At Leipzig/Halle airport (LEJ/EDDP) we are in the fortunate situation of having the largest transport aircraft in the world - the Antonov An-225 "Mriya" - right at our doorstep several times a year. But when it arrived here on 27/04/2020 from Almaty (Kazakhstan), it was a special occasion anyway, because this time it wasn't here for overweight generators, oil drilling equipment or huge boilers, but brought in 10.3 million(!) face masks from China as a COVID-19 relief measure.
Judging from its weight, this was probably not the kind of cargo you would normally use such a giant plane for, but you can imagine in this case it's the sheer volume of Mriya's cargo compartment that justified its use. With over 1000 of the 1230 cubic metres of space available taken, the one-of-a-kind plane broke yet another world record!
...and if you'd like to see that landing from an on board perspective: • Ан-225 МРИЯ. , but I highly recommend watching my video first! :)

*As you may know, the aircraft featured in this video, the only flying Antonov An-225, has been destroyed in the Russian war against Ukraine. Antonov (and in fact the Ukrainian government!) are determined to rebuild the An-225. If you want to support this, you can make a donation here:* an225fund.org/en/

Damn!! Again!! You have probably captured this GIANT the most number of times on YT. Lovely work there Gerd!

Thx! Yes, I'm very lucky when it comes to Antonov's giant planes! Even An-124s (with no more than 56 ever built!) are hardly considered special here at LEJ, as you know. On the other hand, there are far busier airports than LEJ (well, not at the moment that is 😄), so the giant planes are just making up for the lack of traffic here 😉 Stay safe and may there be enough airplanes in the world for you! 😀

Oh yes! As you can see on my channel, the An-225 is a relatively frequent guest at my local airport, but that can change very quickly and so I take every chance to capture this impressive giant! I hope you'll get the chance to catch it one day too!

Genial !

What a monster! Leipzig seems to get quite a few rare aircraft on a regular basis, I'm jealous.😁 Great video anyway, thanks for sharing!

Thanks a lot, glad you like it! Yes, when it comes to rare planes, especially Antonov cargo monsters, Leipzig is the place to go. But on the downside there's few "normal" traffic here, certainly not anywhere near to the numbers you are used to at Schiphol! 😉 On the other hand, Leipzig/Halle is DHL's European hub and most of _their_ flights take off or land at night time, so over the day the airport with its two parallel runways and relatively few traffic is attractive for airlines to do pilot training ... even for KLM!: kzbin.info/www/bejne/emHHf4eCrrZ1btU 😀

LEJ.approach/dvldi Oh that’s really cool!! I knew KLM does training flights in France and the UK but wasn’t aware of any training flights at LEJ. Keep up the good work and great videos!!

Guys, where's the contradiction? When the An-225 was designed and built, Ukraine has been part of the USSR and so in general it's Soviet (meaning _from the USSR_ ), but created by a Ukrainian company (or design bureau). Sure, without the Soviet _Buran_ program it wouldn't have been created, but even though the Ariane space rocket is a European project, its German parts are still German, aren't they?

Richtig gut! Sind denn viele Flugzeuge momentan in LEJ abgestellt? Ein Video darüber wäre sicher auch interessant :)
@LEJapproach
@LEJapproach 4 жыл бұрын
Vielen Dank!
