Soto gets the mercenary tag because he wanted to wait till free agency. He didn’t request a trade from the Nats. He didn’t request a trade from San Diego. They didn’t want to lose him for nothing. Soto wanted the chance to pick his team and get as much money as he can. How does that make him a bad guy? Giambi; Texeria; Damon ; Cole etc all chose money and maybe a chance to win. But primarily money. Mets finally do the same thing, and now Soto is a selfish bad teammate?

Soto is a hell of a player. Any team would be happy to have him. However, he is certainly a selfish player. The Yankees offered him the most money overall and most years. He balked because of a family suite. That just tells me he always planned to leave the Yankees and didn’t have the balls to tell them in time for the Yankees to adjust fire and sign some of the best FAs that were available while chasing Soto. It’s also incredibly telling that not one Yankee wanted to talk to him after the season. Aaron Judge is notoriously a nice guy and goes out of his way to try and help land FAs. Judge could’ve cared less about reaching out to Soto. Tells you a lot.

I saw an old clip of Judge after he signed his deal saying during his free agency period he shut people out and only spoke with his fam and friends, saw another clip of Lindor saying he only spoke to Soto once then left him alone because he didn’t wanna selfishly stress his out.
