I live a couple miles away from a small meat locker. They do lots of cows, a few Buffalo and sometimes other things depending on the season. I recently found out that they are throwing away all their hides! I've never tanned my own leather before, but I'm trying cow hides now. I'm excited to see your process because honestly I am in way over my head 🙈😅

Yeah I know how you feel about in over your head. Lol. My step kids dad is a butcher so I buy hides from him. He told me that when his shop butchers cows and things that the hides just get tossed in the dumpster. That's pretty sad. It's basically throwing away money it seems like. I've been buying cow and deer hides from step kids dad but haven't had a chance yet to start fleshing. Either the weather sucks or I get side tracked with other things. I have 2 freezers. My smaller freezer is full, only about 4 or 5 cow hides are in that one and at my mother's I have a couple cow hides and a few deer hides in it as well. I really need to get on building fleshing posts. I wish I knew of someone nearby that could show me the process hands on and any tips and tricks I can learn along the way. I'm on the Autistic Spectrum. While it's nice to watch videos, I really do learn better from someone that actually tans the hides. That would really be better way to learn for me. But yeah, I do think to, that it would be something that would be great to learn for trade or something if economy ever does collapse. I don't think we are too far off from that, anyhow...

I'm in the process of doing my first one. It was almost 200lbs, and hardly had any meat left on it. I bought Sea90 but soon realized that it was too expensive, Sodium Chloride pool salt from Walmart was $7.48 for a 40lb bag. It was even cheaper before the 2022-23 inflation.

@@clintonminer7636I used Clorox brand but they sell Morton as well, just a few cents more. Both were pure Sodium Chloride. The Sea90 salt I bought was $50 for 50lbs. It's more for gardens and pastures but good enough to eat. The pool salts says not for consumption on the bag.

I just found a black cow hide in the road that I know has not been there for more than 8hrs(evening). The sun has been down the whole time. I brought it with me and laid it out in the bed skin up. It’s cleaned well of meat and only smells like cow manure not rotten. Can I still save it?!
@officialDavidRees
@officialDavidRees Жыл бұрын
@@HiddenVisionTattoo I think so! You usually have 24 before the meat breaks down and the fat goes rancid, when the actual flesh starts to rot is when the hair will release. Get salt on it asap. I did find that when I thought I did a good job on fleshing, I needed to do more. It can be done after being salted too, you'll just waste a little salt. I have seen that others take a grinding wheel to them with great success, I haven't tried that method. I only used a cheap draw knife from Amazon that I usually use to debark logs. Good luck! Keep us posted. I laid out a large tarp and had a smooth log that I worked scraping the hide around with the draw knife, then smoothed it out, washed both sides with dish soap, and re-salted the flesh side. I'll scrape it some more then soak it in a tub of Hi-Yield aluminum sulfate and water, do some hole repairs, egg yolk rub, rinse, and put it on a stretcher frame, then see how it all worked out. I could honestly probably use it right now as a rug but it's just really stiff.

Your shot was not in frame so we could only see the back 1/3 of the hide. Maybe you should have dragged the hide further back so we could get a good look at the entire hide. If you're going to continue posting videos on KZbin, you might want to consider having an assistant on the camera or check the position of the camera before recording to get the best shot. Audio sounded ok though. Even with your moving around It remained consistently unaffected and easy to hear.

@TJHutchExotics
@TJHutchExotics 4 жыл бұрын
Brody Burt - also, if the hide is salted there is no need to freeze. But it’s very important that salted hides be allowed to drain -if they are allowed to sit in the fluid that the salt pulls out the hair will slip. It wouldn’t hurt to salt once, let it drain, then re-salt. Again, I highly recommend checking out the Skillcult channel- he has taught me SO much
