Really, if you own a bell, you can play it any way you like. Just make it fit with the rest of the group. I even sometimes play tumbas with mallets - example, the Tu-Way-Pock-E-Way figure that Vernel Fournier plays on Ahmad Jamal's "Poinciana".

Sure! But what we’re describing here covers the traditional sounds and techniques that are native to the instruments. In the end you can play whatever instrument you’d like however you’d like ideally as long as it serves the music. But it’s a never a bad idea to have a basic understanding of the roots of any instrument you’re playing 👍🏼
