I can't believe you haven't seen Cowboy Bebop! It's so immediately immersive. It's simultaneously futuristic fantasy and charmingly vintage (even when it came out in 98) the scenery, art, animation, music, choreography, characters all work together so well and hook you immediately. You'll be drip fed backstory for the main characters throughout the series. It's so unique and smart. It's truly an experience to watch it for the first time. I'm a little jealous.

Katrina and Asimov are such great characters for the pilot episode. It establishes one of my favorite themes in the show of being haunted by your past and not being able to move on/escape from it. I think that’s why the bebop keeps losing the reward for their bounties. they are supposed to be stuck and not able to move forward with their lives

Phase difference space gates are never explained in the story, but are only explained in commentary books. According to the "blinking universe theory" that was discovered in 2007, this world blinks in a 1/48 second cycle, and there exists another dimension called "phase difference space" that appears when this happens. The size of this space is 1/240, and by traveling within this phase difference space, you can reach your destination 240 times faster than if you were traveling in normal space. The phase difference space gates make this possible, and it is now possible to travel at high speeds between the entrance gate and the exit gate. It is like a highway in space. Each gate is made up of multiple huge rings, and each ring is responsible for accelerating and decelerating, collecting tolls, etc. The toll is automatically paid by money card when passing through a device called a "credit sensor" on the toll gate ring (similar to ETC). In addition to being used as a highway, they are also used to make it easier to guide sunlight to areas of space far from the sun, such as the Jupiter sphere, where sunlight is difficult to reach. Director Watanabe has stated that he came up with the idea for the gate after seeing the gaps between frames of film.

The Tijuana from episode one is an asteroid colony, hence the episode title (an establishing shot shows it from space early on). You will be told whenever Earth comes in to play. It can be assumed that there are a bunch of colonies in Bebop's world, and a lot of them are likely named after familiar earth cities and perhaps first settled primarily by different earth cultures

Asimov's line of "Keep those eyes open". Sometimes when I wakeup I repeat that line in order to get myself up.
in episode 2 has many calls back to bruce lee and enter the dragon/the game of death especially with Abdul Hakeem(He's based off Kareem Abdul-Jabbar basketball player and actor who was in The game of Death) and Spike fighting each other (bruce lee vs Kareem) and Spike knowing martial arts and being as devoted to to that along with seeing cool weapons , showing off his personality. Yeah cowboy bebop does a very good job at establishing the characters and the world without going overboard with exposition its all about shots and music and backgrounds and you fill in things with your mind (space travel, colonizing planets or moons and mining asteroids and seeing how in far future we still have classism, police, government, money, jobs, crime etc..)

The BEST part about Bebop is the sparseness of the setting and the background and the past of the entire universe. You have to really pick up on hints, clues, and things barely said to figure out what happened, and it's ABSOLUTELY so much more enriching for it.

You speaking about the story having confidence is great. I don't see a lot of ppl talk about stories like that, but it's clear that a lot of storytellers don't have confidence in their story, characters, world, etc. and they feel the need to rush everything. They are scared the audience will get bored or realize the flaws in their story so they try to distract you with fast pacing and spectacles so you don't have time to properly digest what is actually going on and if it is actually good. Mushoku Tensei is one of the shows that is current and I feel that it is confident enough to spend time with it's characters and the world instead of speed running the plot. What makes the problem worse is that anime and manga just keep getting more and more generic. Lot's of stories are very unoriginal. Then on top of that the author instead of at least making the characters and world interesting, they speedrun through the plot. They destroy any chance of making a good story even if their plot is generic. You can have a generic plot and still have a great story if you spend time with interesting characters and build up the world properly. Most authors are too unconfident (maybe justifiably so if they suck, but if you don't try then you'll never make something good).

21:15 I think you might have missed a quick shot during that very first scene. It's understandable, because it's very quick, only on screen for a second or two. Spike's machine gun was hidden _in_ the roses. That one shot changes the whole feel of the scene. It changes the scenario from "guy waiting for his girl" to "assassin waiting for his mark". That's also why Spike and [spoiler] grin at each other when they're standing back-to-back: they're not panicked, they were _expecting_ that firefight.

Fun Facts: (1) Spike wearing the poncho in Episode 1 is paying homage to Clint Eastwood's "Man With No Name'" character (also a bounty hunter). (2) 1 Woolong is the equivalent of 0.01 cent U.S.D. Thus, 1 million Woolongs is around $10,000 dollars.🤑💰💸

41:32 with on-point riffing like that, I am convinced of a good time following the rest of y'alls content, so that's a subbin'~ Bebop is one of those anime that leans a bit farther past the line of "important anime" into "really good damn anime". This meaning the sort of important that the Beatles or film noir or _shonen_ anime classics are. Not everyone's cup of tea, but undoubtedly the big game changers that paved the way for many others. Cowboy Bebop stands on its own in this category as yeah, something not everyone can get it into, but is downright meteoric in its reputation and influence, coming and going. You're gonna be in for quite an adventure with this one, so be ready for it to answer all the questions.

Cowboy Bebop was produced by Sunrise and aired from April to June 1998, with some of the series' 26 episodes. In September 2001, a theatrical version, Cowboy Bebop: Door to Heaven, was released. It won the TV award at the 3rd Kobe Animation Festival in November 1998, and the Nebula Award in the Media category at the Japan Science Fiction Convention in 2000. Set in the solar system centered on Mars in 2071, this space western anime follows the adventures of bounty hunter Spike Spiegel and his crew as they travel aboard the dilapidated spaceship, the Bebop. It features stylish dialogue, cool visuals, and thrilling mecha and gun action. The main story has a hard-boiled touch, but the style varies depending on the episode, with a wide range including suspense, horror, slapstick comedy, and cyberpunk. As the title "Bebop" suggests, the series uses a variety of music genres, including jazz, blues, rock, and techno, and this, combined with its unique worldview, creates a unique style that was not seen in existing science fiction works. Director Shinichiro Watanabe said, "I made this by putting in everything I had wanted to do up until then but couldn't," and "I thought I was making a 20-minute movie each time." When it was first broadcast, many people said it was similar to "Lupin the Third," but according to Watanabe, it is more similar to the TV drama "Detective Story," starring Yusaku Matsuda, which was popular in Japan in the 1970s (including the narration for the next episode preview). Another feature of this work is that the racial characteristics of the characters are well reflected in the design of the world setting. According to character designer Toshihiro Kawamoto, this was because director Watanabe gave permission. The production was handled by Sunrise Studio 2. The core staff was made up of people from the network of Watanabe and producer Masahiko Minami, who had previously been involved in Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, Mobile Fighter G Gundam, Macross Plus, and Escaflowne. After the TV series was produced, Minami and his team left Sunrise to found Bones, which produced the film. Sunrise is originally a studio that produces many original robot animes with the intention of commercializing toys, but the idea for this work also came from an offer from Bandai Hobby Division, who saw a spaceship boom coming with the resurgence in popularity following the release of the new Star Wars trilogy, to make an anime that could be developed into spaceship plastic models. When Minami asked Watanabe if he had any ideas, he was inspired by the work of American bounty hunters and immediately came up with an idea for a stateless action movie set in space in the near future. The concept was "space jazz" rather than space opera, and the project title was "Shooting Star Bebop!" . However, the unique style of the work was met with a negative response from those around, and it was almost lumped together with another project that Sunrise was working on at the same time. The sponsor almost dropped the project, saying, "This won't sell spaceships," but with the cooperation of Bandai Visual, the show was able to be aired. The record company releasing the soundtrack opposed the idea, saying, "How many jazz records do you think sell in Japan?" (Music director Yoko Kanno also said that she initially thought, "Jazz will never sell"), and those involved who watched the first episode before it aired commented, "It's too dull. It won't sell." With no prospect of royalty income from the toys, a detailed plan was devised to recoup the investment through music CDs and video packages. As a result, the software was a hit, and Sunrise stated that this work "achieved sales of videos and music CDs comparable to those of the Gundam series." According to producer Minami, the production costs were so high that the president of Sunrise said to him, "Minami, are you trying to ruin the company!?" The opening and ending songs and background music in the film were all composed by Yoko Kanno, with the exception of a few, and performed by The Seatbelts, a group that included Kanno and other musicians from Japan and abroad. In addition to the ending song, vocal songs were used extensively. The first soundtrack won the Animation Album of the Year award at the 13th Japan Gold Disc Awards. The theme song, Tank!, was used in the short program of Canadian male single skater Kevin Reynolds at the 2016 Canadian Figure Skating Championships (with costumes by Spike Spiegel). The terrestrial broadcast version was subject to self-censorship, and violent and sexual content, as well as flashing lights, were revised or cut. This was due to the fact that between the start of production and the broadcast, there were violent crimes committed by minors, such as the Kobe serial child murders and the Tochigi female teacher stabbing incident, and TV Tokyo's regulations were strengthened due to the "Pokémon Shock." The final episode, a compilation titled "Yoseatsume Blues - A Collection Blues," is a protest against these restrictions and cuts in the form of monologues by the main characters, and unlike regular compilations, it makes almost no reference to the story itself. The ending concludes with the provocative message, "THIS IS NOT THE END. YOU WILL SEE THE REAL "COWBOY BEBOP" SOMEDAY!" This episode has been excluded from subsequent rebroadcasts and has not been included on video software such as DVDs. In the United States, the series was first released on video and DVD, and was broadcast nationwide (TV-14: ages 14 and over only) on the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim slot from September 1, 2001, where it gained popularity. However, the depictions of fake blood and naked women were edited out for this broadcast, and episodes 6 (as they were reminiscent of the Columbine High School shooting), 8 (hijacking), and 22 (building bombing) were not broadcast on the first episode due to broadcasting codes and the influence of the September 11 terrorist attacks (though they were aired in a rerun immediately after). The evolution of the theme songs is as follows 😌 Opening theme "Tank!" Composed by Yoko Kanno / Performed by The Seatbelts (THE SEATBELTS) Ending theme "THE REAL FOLK BLUES" Lyrics by Yuho Iwasato / Composed and arranged by Yoko Kanno / Sung by Mai Yamane "SPACE LION" (#13) Composed by Yoko Kanno / Performed by The Seatbelts (THE SEATBELTS) "BLUE" (#26) Lyrics by Tim Jensen / Composed and arranged by Yoko Kanno / Sung by Mai Yamane Here's the OST 😀 [COWBOY BEBOP SOUNDTRACK 1] Released May 21, 1998 (VICL-60201) Won the Grand Prize in the Animation Album category at the 13th Japan Gold Disc Awards. Nobody: Bebop staff: “Hey, what if we made the 1969 Milwaukee Bucks era Kareem Abdul-Jabbar the bounty in episode two? Wouldn’t that just be so weird and random?”

This has to be my favorite anime series.

I’m loving watching you all check out this series already. Bebop is such a classic Ps The “seems that way” line seems like something that might be funny to add to the sound board 🚀

Nothing beats the "classics" when it comes to story and "animation"... remnants of the golden age of anime... Edit : forgot to add ...the music in this one is a banger its absolutely a masterpiece on its own .

90's anime had the best English dubbing, and Cowboy Bebop was on top of them. You should check out their Knocking on Heaven's Door. Absolute fantastic animation.

By the way episodes aftercredits have funny sketches and banter between different characters and mostly non spoilery, so you can watch it if you want.

Ooh y'all are starting a straight up anime classic. Are you planning on reacting to the movie when everything for the original series has been finished?
