The Lord of the Rings, as movies, and strictly as movies, was only possible due to the environment it came out. CGI was revolutionized with Terminator 2, followed by The Matrix with bullet time and other amazing break throughs. Then you had Gladiator and Saving Private Ryan, big spectacle epics that revolutionized blood and gore. The CGI, mixed with the specatcle, mixed with the live action sets and miniatures were only possible during those years at the turn of the millenium. It was lightning in a bottle. Imagine if LOTR came out in 2024, or 1954....it wouldn't be the same.

@@brettmuir5679 Balrog means in Sindarin "demon of might" (bal = power/might, raug/rog=demon). There are few good angelic spirits of flame and fire around, (as Tolkien says most flame spirits joined with Melkor/Morgoth) and one of them, Arien, takes care of the Sun. But there are no good Balrogs, just as there are no good demons.

Tbf, most of the mistakes he made was because the One Ring was specifically targeting him with it's magic due to it knowing humans are weakest to it's powers. If you remember the scene from The Two Towers where he was giving a speech to his army, he was a pretty normal and awesome dude when not around the Ring.

It hits harder with the extended edition version, the OG version. Peter Jackson wanted us to see the extended (uncut) versions in the theatres, but Harvey Weinstein stopped him. In fact, Harvey wanted just ONE movie in the threatres, not a trilogy. 5 years of court proceedings - and the 'harvey weinstein orc" in return of the king (made at Jackson's specific direction) was the result. Too many people don’t realize they are arguing in favour of a version of this movies that was only shown in theatres because of legal reasons - not for artistic reasons. - Peter Jackson’s passion project team was forced to not show their full content as it would cut into what the cinema CEOs literally called the theatrical edition to get more screen time in and more mulla for themselves. It’s a such a nasty business. 80 percent true that money be the root of all evil. It’s the reason the real pumped out the EE as fast as possible in DVD format before the second and third film hit theatres to get back at Harvey Weinstein, again, they wanted people to see the whole movie which invites feelings of completion in one’s heart. But he just announced that’s he found 1300 hours worth of footage from a warehouse he finally got access to so we will see more specially made super extended edition cinema extravaganzas that no cinema would pass on the opportunity to ride on his coattails again. The EE wasn’t just for fans. He literally was adapting the books to film as honestly as possible. the DVD documentaries showed that they didn’t want to cut anything. And weaselled around things to create the EE. (EE is extended edition by the way! ❤️). Without the extended for the next two films I always say “Good luck missing the Boromir backstory. Good luck explaining why the cloak turns into a rock. Good luck explaining the elves that had explained their current situation since the first film. It all ties together good luck skipping the gift scene with Galadriel and Celeborn and the extra scenes between Aragorn and Celeborn & Galadriel to Aragorn!” It’s seriously needed for the film worldbuilding and heightening the stakes. Also, I’d rather have faith people have the emotional and intellectual IQ high enoug to understand it or shall we have changed the title to something else same as how JK was forced to change the title in America to sorcerers stone instead of PHILOSPHER as Americans don’t even know what a Philospher is anymore these days which is sad. Relating to that: Tolkien was very sad about people losing connection to their past and heritage etc!

I heard a guy who worked in Hollywood a long time say that it used to be writers had a lot of real world experience, but now they're like hired out of college and placed on these writing teams. Gene Roddenberry had a long career as a cop before creating Star Trek. George Miller, creator and director of the Mad Max movies, is a doctor by trade. Tolkien was a professor and linguist who survived WW1. Dude knew what it was like to walk into hell and return. He created an entire world with thousands of years of history and multiple languages for a fantasy series that would be considered short by modern standards.

Not that Roddenberry was a great writer. Props for creating Star Trek as a concept, but the The Cage and TMP, where he had the most creative control, were some of the low points for the franchise. There are worse episodes, not to mention Star Trek V, but Roddenberry's vision for a more evolved, conflict-free humanity was antithetical to good storytelling.

The idea came from that and then his desire to come up with stories to tell his kid and dude just got invested in it and wanted to explain everything. Once he got going he just kept adding more ideas and fleshed it out and just built this massive world. Now they just build a facade of a world that's enough to tell the story.

It took many years for that seed to sprout and grow, and when he started writing it down, realized about half way through that it wasn't working and started over. @@leeneufeld4140 He was asked by his publisher for a sequel to The Hobbit. He wanted to publish the legendarium, but the publisher wanted more about Hobbits. So he put his life work aside and wrote the Lord of the Rings. Of course, as in The Hobbit, the world he had been creating to explain the Elvish languages he had created, kept seeping into the story. After the Lord of the Rings was publish, he turned back to the other works and tried to make it all fit together into the same space. So much was written before The Hobbit even existed. And was written and re-written throughout his entire life and beyond to his son publishing. But it started with the languages.

Something to remember is that this movie came out in Dec 2001, barely three months after 9/11. When Frodo and Gandalf are talking in Moria and Frodo says “I wish none of this had ever happened,” the entire audience was sharing that feeling. Gandalf’s answer, that “all we have to do is to decide what to do with the time that is given us,” meant so much to so many.

When I was in college I got to see Ian McClellan in Shakespeare's "Macbeth" (1981). He was awesome and made me fall in love with Shakespeare...I knew he was a super talent even then!!!!!

Tolkien wrote multiple dialects of elvish as well as other languages. He was a professor of Anglo-Saxon languages at Oxford. My favorite tidbit is when he wrote the Hobbit the editor tried to use the more accepted spelling of "dwarfs" rather then Tolkien's use of "dwarves." Tolkien told him basically "shut up I wrote the dictionary"

A brilliant detail from Peter Jackson: the Nazgul appears from behind the tree, from right to left; however, if you look closely before it appears, there's nothing on the right side of the tree. The Nazgul wasn't riding from right to left, it simply materialized where it had to be in order to find the Ring.

The reason the bugs & worms were coming out of the soil when the Ringwraith was near the hiding hobbits (and the reason the dog was afraid of the searching Ringwraith earlier) is because the Nazgul are so vile and terrible that nature itself abhors them. The trees were shuddering as they approached the hobbits on the road, which is why Frodo yelled, "Get off the road! Quick!" They are anti-life ("neither living nor dead" as Aragorn describes them). They are servants of Sauron, aka Gorthaur, aka "Abomination." Just touching one could injure or kill you. Thus the creepy crawlies in the earth wanted to move away from it as fast as possible. ((Extended but about the Nazgûl below)). The 9 Nazgûl are blind and basically deaf also, they can only "smell" the ring and the energies of the Unseen Realm. Sauron was always weary of The WitchKing Of Angmar, (The Leader Nazgûl), would launch an attempt to usurp his power. If you want more lore and background, watch the extended versions. Also, the extended version for return of the king is almost compulsory because the theatre version of that one literally leaves out the end stories of 3 characters and doesnt explain an important plot point. And you wont notice the extra time - by the end you’ll want more. The elves made all the rings, using magic taught to them by sauron. But that input from sauron is how sauron’s ring can corrupt the bearers of the other rings. Different races are immune to different extents. Elves because they are wise, dwarves because all they care about is treasures. Men are most vulnerable because their desires are greater. The more prone you are to desire - as boromir desires to protect his people - the more vulnerable you are to the corruption. Hobbits are strongly immune because they only desire simple things. Aragorn is more immune because he doesnt wish to have the powers of the king.

Gandalfs speech to the Balrog on the bridge of a khazad dum right before they both fall. "I'm a servant of the secret fire...." Is gandalfs proclaiming himself a Maia (essentially an angel of the same spiritual class as the Balrog) and that he's a far bigger threat to the demon than it realizes. Gandalfs isn't a man. He's an angel sent to middle earth to help the ppls of middle earth save themselves. The vast majority of his angelic powers have been withheld from him hence why his "order" pretends to be wizards. In a later writing, Tolkien suggested that the Witch-king was actually daunted by Frodo and hid for a short time after Weathertop. The other rings do exist in these movies. Gandalf has one, Elrond has one, Galadriel has one. Gadalfs ring projects an aura around it, giving people hope and bolstering their spirits. Elronds ring allows him to have some control over water (Arwen crossing into the realm of the elves at the river). The reason the one ring is so powerful is because Sauron tricked the craftman who made them into making the rings. Because Sauron had influence over their creation, he knew how they worked and then made his own.

The elven rings also protect people within their range from the sadness of death. Elves dont die, but being amongst peoples who do die cumulatively weighs on them. Thats why bilbo goes to rivendell, where elrond’s ring protects him from the pain inflicted by the one ring. Galadriel’s ring conceals lothlorien from others, including sauron.

They had the craftsmen that helped sauron (unknowingly) remake them. Of the other rings, I hope you caught that the 9 Nazgul were the same 9 kings of men seen in the intro, their rings are why they’re still around “neither living nor dead” and enslaved to Sauron’s will. In the extended version Galadriel reveals to Frodo that she’s wearing one of the elf rings (people don’t realize that she was the blonde elf woman hoisting a ring in the very beginning of the intro.) Another ring is worn by Elrond which gives him power to protect Rivendell. The 3rd elf ring is secret but somebody in the comments no doubt will spoil that. As for Dwarf rings, they never worked as Sauron intended, dwarves proved too stubborn to succumb to the will of Sauron. Their rings just made them rich and greedy. That’s touched on a bit in the later “The Hobbit” trilogy.

In the Extended Edition Galadriel shows Frodo that she is the wearer of one of the three Rings given to the Elves. It was no secret. The power of her Ring is demonstrated, rather dramatically, in The Hobbit (even if it is not in the novel). The Rings of Power goes into some detail about the creation of the Rings and is very roughly excerpted from The Silmarilion. Aragorn's time will come - be patient.

It shows you at least 30-45mins of uncut or deleted scenes or content of the original movie length for each installment as it should be. Because younger people don't get it.... Pipeweed is not remotely any form of cannabis. It's tobacco, plain and simple. Tolkien was an avid pipe smoker and tobacco was common during World War I, which he served in. "All that could be discovered about it in antiquity was put together by Meriadoc Brandybuck (later Master of Buckland), and since he and the tobacco of the Southfarthing play a part in the history that follows…" He specifically mentions it's a variety of Nicotiana and the Men of the West also appreciated the plant's flowers (look up tobacco flowers sometime). Nobody grows marijuana for aesthetics. BONUS NOTES - in the book, Gandalf actually puts a protection spell on Bill to help ensure he gets back home safe from Moria - The creature in the lake at Moria seems to cave in the mines intentionally in the book, as if driving them in and trapping them there rather than just a part of an attack - When the captain throws the knife at Aragorn in the final fight, the actor actually had trouble seeing from the make up and everything... his throw was off and it was legitimately coming straight at Viggo (Aragorn). That sword swing to knock it aside was real, not choreographed or planned. - A lot of the tracks for the score are named after chapters of the books. The move did wink at one with "A shortcut to what? Mushrooms!" as a chapter is "A Shortcut to Mushrooms" I highly, HIGHLY recommend you all watch the extended edition of Two Towers and Return of the King as there are some scenes that are crucial to really getting the full movie that were unfortunately cut for time from the theatrical release.

One thing that appears in the books that doesn't appear in the movies is when Gandalf goes to see Saruman, he's in for a bit of a shock. Saruman is the head of this wizardly order. He is Saruman the White, next comes Gandalf the Grey and then Radahast the Brown (which you see early in the book but was taking out of the movie) as well as two unamed blue wizards who travelled into the East and are never seen again. So when Gandalf goes to visit Saruman, Gandalf is surprised to see Saruman changed. Saruman reveals himself to not be Saruman the White anymore but Saruman of the Many Colors and Gandalf gets some bad vibes. Both Saruman and Gandalf have been around for over a thousand years and they were sent there to help in containing Sauron. Unbeknownst to everyone else, Saruman almost from the beginning started searching for the ring all the while telling Galadriel and Elrond that the ring had probably been swept out to see when Isildur lost it in the Arduin. Oh, and Lady Galadriel is on equal footing with Elrond when it comes to greatness, grace and power among their people. It always seems funny to me when reactors say "hmm, she seems pretty sketch". When she says to be a bearer of a ring of power is to be alone, she knows what she is talking about because she has one of the rings herself, but Sauron can't exert his power over her.

I have several times had discussions with people about LOTR who I know have read the books and when mentioning Saruman of many colours they look at me like I am talking nonsense, I guess it had just been a while since they read it, so thank you for this reminder that I am not just imagining things. I always liked how the many colours thing reveals how short sighted Saruman is, since when you combine lights of many colours what you get is white, so in his effort to assert his mastery over everything he is in fact splintering it.

Rowling based it on the One Ring to create them. Sometimes because you couldn't see things in order, you forget what really came first and I tell you, The Lord of the Rings is much older than Harry Potter, the very concept of ''Dark Lord'' so used in Literature, cinema and animation were born from Tolkien's Legendarium

A huge part of this series is the amount of practical sets they built. From simple throne rooms to the town of Hobbiton itself. That's what made the world feel so alive. Also the two of you in the back realizing where all those memes came from was my favorite part of this.

29:45 okay so, just as a small bit of clarification: Bilbo didnt age so suddenly because he gave up the ring. Well, he did but not in the way of it just suddenly catching up to him.. See a small detail they left out of the movie because they largely had no good way of portraying it without just putting it as text on screen, is that once Gandalf leaves Frodo and tells him to keep the ring secret and safe, theres actually 17 YEARS that pass before he comes back to the Shire! So Bilbo has actually just aged naturally in that time. 48:31 The single greatest "NOOOOO!!!" ever recorded in film history. Eljiah Wood put his freaking SOUL into that. Then seeing how much Gandalf meant to all of them afterwards, as a friend, as a mentor, even Legolas, someone with 2,931 years of age (yes, really) was distraught with his loss. While Aragorn also in shock realizes he needed to step up and be that leader, to get everyone moving and away from danger as much as he himself was hurting. I will forever sing the praises of this scene til the end of time. Final addition, everyone who can appreciate cinema has that one movie or franchise that just means a LOT to them. Youve got your Star Wars nerds that look up to Luke Skywalker, youve got your Harry Potheads with their trio, youve got your Trekkies with their Captains Picard and Kirk, for me its the Lord of the Rings and the entire dynamic of the Fellowship. These movies mean so much to me and ive only grown to appreciate them more and more as ive gotten older. When i was younger it was the same as everyone else, the Fellowship was slow and boring, but the action in the next two movies drew my attention. As i got older though, i learned to appreciate the background, lore and world building Fellowship set up, the moments of heroism and sacrifice, lines of dialogue that can move you to tears or inspire a lifetime. There is no word more appropriate than "magical". I really cant understate just how much they mean to me. Truly once in a lifetime, and i am so thankful to have seen them in mine. Maybe by the end of the saga, the girls and bro can understand why, and i fully expect to see Addie and Bradlynn as utter messes in the ending moments, and as a 32 Y.O bearded, bald headed metalhead who has never once walked away from RotK with dry eyes out of the well over a hundred times of watching the trilogy, there is no shame in that. @Edwin.X For the most part. The ring had been lost for 3000 years at that point so finding any reliable information was going to be difficult. It's essentially like trying to prove every event in the Bible as being historically accurate proof. He traveled all over middle earth to find records of the One Ring, what may have happened to it and where it was lost etc, then having a tough time getting access and finding information in the archives of Minas Tirith to comb through the records of Isildur. After that he started looking for Gollum and was accompanied by Aragorn before they finally found him, and after threatening him with fire Gollum reveled he'd already been captured by Mordor and tortured. Around that point is when he told Aragorn to wait for them at Bree, he went back to the Shire and sent Frodo and Sam off, then went to Saruman. We know the rest of what happens.

For the question at 1:10:10 you guys **have** to watch the extended versions going forward. Especially the scene where the pressure Boromirs father puts on him is shown is so important, also for Faramirs character. It's such a shame they cut it for the theatrical version. Extended versions are a must, so many great scenes are cut.
