I think it's easy to interpret Faye watching the video of her younger self as being about something broader than Faye specifically having amnesia... About the human experience in general of losing one's true self, younger self, and the version of yourself you'd planned to become - including the things you'd planned to do with your life. Also, humans in general only have a limited capacity to remember bits and pieces of their past lives (with imperfect memories that get skewed, biased, and rewritten over time), so Faye's amnesia is only an exaggerated version of something that gradually happens to everyone (assuming you live long enough).

80s makes the most sense for timeframe for Faye's Beta recordings. Between the use of Beta tapes instead of VHS which was a more common practice for people doing home recordings during that period, the time in which Cowboy Bebop first aired/was created, and that this would be archaic technology even by 90s standards, all of those things add up to it being late 70s at the earlier to more likely the 80s.

My high school invested in a lot of Betamax's in the early 90s thinking that it being the better format that it would outlast VCR so when I went through high school in the late 90s there was a single VCR for the school but lots of Betamaxs available if teachers needed to wheel in the TV for something.

not knowing what a video tape is, but spike uses a jericho 941R from 1990 and jet uses walther p99 from 1997, lmao always found that kind of funny how 90 percent of the guns in the show are from the eighties and nineties but the show takes place deep into the future

There were actually three competing standards for video tapes: VHS, Betamax and Video 2000. Unfortunately the technically best one (Video 2000) lost out to both VHS and Betamax, while Betamax (which was the better of the two) lost out to VHS. Some people think this was because of the availability of porn on VHS, but more likely is the fact that JVC (the company that developed VHS) were more willing to license their technology at lower prices, which in turn led to the proliferation of VHS via multiple vendors. Both Sony (Betamax) and Philips (Video 2000) were less willing to license out their technology and so lost out in the race for the home video market. Of course Sony and Philips came back later with DVD and BluRay, so they got the last laugh compared to JVC.

My friend had both types of players. His dad rented VHS movies and copied them to Beta because Beta is higher quality. Of course these days I realize that makes no sense. It's not like the quality of the video would get better somehow.

With the right inputs, you can use a VCR to transfer the information from a VHS to a computer. You do not need to transfer to a DVD first. They did have VHS/DVD combo players and eventually, the combo could copy a VHS to DVD. But a computer could have a coaxial input or AV inputs that would allow you to connect a VCR or a BETA.

There is actually a VCR you can buy that has a USB-A connection for your computer. Built in video capture. It's called "VCR 2 PC", made by ION. The VCR shows up as a webcam/video capture device that you can use your favorite recording program to capture. I bought one many years ago. If you have a working VCR already, there are several Video to USB capture devices available also. Both have come in real handy as I have hundreds of video tapes, many family recordings, that I made over the years. It's just a matter of finding time to capture the tapes. A 1 hour long tape recording takes 1 hour to capture. There is no way to speed it up.
