That's one of the things Watanabe wanted to put in with this film. We see something similar in emotion, and that is with Pierrot in Session 20 and Spike expressing genuine fear within the first 5 minutes. Watanabe wanted to show more humanity in Spike and kind of tweak his character to display this. Spike isn't the one in control here, whereas he usually is in the series and does most things in a cool and calm way. It shows that he can be defenseless at times and is able to display vulnerability, even if it has to be forced out of him. This is the only time we see Spike completely helpless in a physical sense.

@Rachael Poulin sure it didn’t have stakes, but the execution was so well made. I knew Spike wasn’t going to die, obviously, but like someone else said the movie is the only time Spike is truly helpless and cannot defend himself, especially since from the look of things he could have beat Vincent. To me that makes the fight scene even greater; that I know the MC will survive but I’m still watching in anxiety (and awe because damn, that animation)

3:12 the detail in this scene was so telling to both Spike and Vincent's inner psyche. Spike doesn't flinch when the bullet passes his skull hence his lack of fear in dieing. And Vincent not losing his train of thought shows he's never caught off guard. The little intricacies is what makes this series and characters a one of a kind.

If I remember correctly, this was actually confirmed, Vincent was meant to be a kind of foil to Spike; both incredible fighters, with indomitable spirits, both with rugged secretive past that shaped them, both driven to this existential existence of wondering if they are alive or dreaming., Both are caught in a "living dream," but both see it differently. Whereas, Spike is seeing the dream as a reflection of his past that he's struggling to overcome--being stuck in this place of half-existence while staying true to himself while carving an existence out in a harsh world. Vincent is the darker look, if a person who fell int that kind of mindset forgoes all sympathy, love, empathy, they just want people to suffer like they do, to make the dream stop at all cost, even if it meant destroying the world--and since it's a dream, is there really any repercussions for his actions, he thinks? Vincent is living in a nightmare, and unlike Spike, instead of seeing it through and not giving into the horror that might be, Vincent is adding to it. The two are quite literally the Alpha and Omega.

It looks impressive, but he isn't really able to get much power from it. Although there is value in stunning strikes, it's also pretty evident from the final fight that Vincent only needs a few very solid hits to bring Spike down, while it takes many hits from Spike to wear Vincent down. Vincent's style is closer to a combination of tiger style kung fu and mma, while Spike is very Bruce Lee inspired.

"You're an original aren't you." that single line alone has so much connotation to it. Spike, being a long time bounty hunter, has seen this sort of mentality from a bounty head so often that it has almost become repetitive. "I have no fear of death, just a dream that lasts for an eternity" is the mentality that all vicious criminals have and that is there folly, they don't seem to understand that they are just another nuisance the world has to go through until they are eradicated. They are nothing but a rinse and repeat that do nothing to benefit the world, only to remind us that these things happen because human and society are flawed in nature. Vincent, although very entertaining, does nothing to change this stereotypical evil villain role, just like almost all evil ppl in that he doesn't fear death and so death he wishes upon others. Spike probably subconsciously picked up the mentality of evil doers because his job is to chase them and so in his condescending remark "You're an original" he portrays that Vincent really isn't original and that most, if not all, evil is inherently unoriginal, I think.

I remember the first time I saw this film. My friend and I were already becoming Bebop fans in our late teens when it was airing on Adult Swim for the first time. One night he and I were at a mutual friend’s house where all the guys in the clique tended to gather for a while. Cool, older dude in college. Many D&D sessions too. I digress. We were watching and this scene right here, was so bad ass. It was pure Bebop but upgraded to a new level with the production value. There were some technical feats achieved here by the animators, like the panning away from the holy hand grenade, to the smoothness of those pylons swinging by below in the water. Very cool math they used. It’s not shown here but the explosion just after the scene clips was done so well with the speed of the monorail.

I agree, the only wrong thing about this movie is for not being live-action. Keanu Reeves would've been a spot-on Spike Spiegel but we never got to see that.

@@KenMasters. live action is not superior to animaton, how is that a flaw? keanu reeves might have had the look of spike down just fine, but as cool a dude he is he's not an actor with much range. Maybe there's something else I've not seen that shows otherwise, but reeves can really only play one type of character, and while he does play that type of character really well, spike isn't that type.

@@ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502 Well that's true, Keanu Reeves would've also made a better Scott Summers/Cyclops better than James Marsden's portrayal who turned the optic blasting mutant into a wimp who is 3 inches shorter. One of the other reasons why he can portray Cowboy Bebop's Spike and X-Men's Cyclops is also because The Matrix (1999), proved how extraordinary he is at being an action star, and a bada$$ like those two characters.
@KenMasters.
@KenMasters. 2 жыл бұрын
@@LJ-hk4tv What do I think of it? Much like The Last of Us Part II, it looked 100% well made, but it's too Woke, which is the turn off. Remember when the irrational white-washing used to be a thing? Now it's the other way around. They were all miscasts in Cowboy Bebop who were only there for political reasons that have nothing to do with the source material, just like Henry Golding's Snake Eyes, Mindy Kaling's Velma Dinkley, and even the whole cast from the up-and-coming Powerpuff Girls by CW.
