+Potential94 I think what makes this episode so pivotal isn't so much Spike being afraid - although I think he is - rather, I think it's the realization that for all intents and purposes, Mad Pierrot challenges everything we've been led to believe about Spike over the previous 19 episodes. He can't die unless it's Vicious who kills him, he doesn't really have any regard for his own life, he's fearless to the point of stupidity... And for the first time, for us, and maybe for Spike, we realize that that whole line is bullshit. This is maybe the only episode where we see a truly over-matched Spike. And let's remember, it's not Spike who gets Mad Pierrot in the end.

That's not how I see it. Spike sees what happened and how many dead and probably that they were Syndicate (or something similar). He just stops, hoping not to aggro Mad Pierrot, because he doesn't know what Pierrot is, other than Bad News. But it doesn't work. Pierrot is crazy and aggressive, and probably knows that Spike isn't just some random innocent in the wrong place at the wrong time: Spike is a killer, just like him. "Hello, Boy." That's when Spike is probably thinking, "Oh, crap!" And then the battle starts. The first thing Spike does is land *accurate* hits on Pierrot, but to no effect. Then Pierrot starts using his 3D Gear which obviously Spike wasn't expecting. This leads to some hand-to-hand and again Spike hasn't fought someone who can basically hover/fly and he immediately loses, but Spike still isn't out and keeps on fighting defensively. I suspect that Pierrot is having a good time fighting someone who he doesn't immediately kill: someone he can play with and not break right away. At this point, Spike uses the barrel and blows up half a city block trying to break contact and *barely* pulls it off, but Pierrot seems to feel that he's got a toy to play with now, and that leads to the rest of the episode. So, I don't think Spike was caught off-guard per se. He had to believe that Pierrot might very well attack him, but it was *how* Pierrot attacked him that caught him off guard. Every step of the fight led to more revelations that made Pierrot seem more and more like some sort of killing machine and not a person... crazy, unstoppable, and with tech he couldn't predict... not at that moment, anyway. The whole fight had to have been deeply unsettling for Spike.

The force field is based off the Holtzman Shield from Frank Herbert's Dune trilogy. The idea is that anything passing over 200 miles per hour can't penetrated it, but anything going below that speed can. So bullets won't go through, but a well thrown knife can.

I believe that on the Batman Series, he was, to a degree! Granted, this Batman was near the beginning of his crusade, and, was just developing techniques/protocols, for specific situations and characters! This version of the penguin, was a proficient hand-to-hand combatant, apparently physically fit, and, well versed in weapons from melee weapons to ballistic! He was tough and skilled enough that he was able to hold his own against both Batman and Joker, TWO highly skilled/esoteric fighters.

The more unbelievable thing is that this episode was digitally drawn. It shows that digital animation can look as good as traditional animation if studios actually spend efforts. Too bad those who make decisions usually try to exploit the convenience of digital animation as a cost cutting measure instead of freeing up the menial workload of traditional animation and letting the animators spend that saved time elsewhere useful.

I remember my chest getting tight as it filled with fear at the violence I wasn't accustomed to seeing in 'cartoons'. As an adult, it's a memory I cherish. This just might be my favorite session of the series. I haven't found something as suspenseful as this since.

This episode was apparently very different and relatively eerie than the rest of the series. Moreover, this episode had a different colour pallete, and even had different animation direction and style as compared to the other episodes. It seemed more like a movie than a regular episode. This episode was so good that it didn't even feel like Cowboy Bebop at some instances.

The beginning when the car pulls into the alley, the whole scene is really reminiscent of the movie Sin City with those metallic feedback sounds and the shots of the dark buildings with shadows everywhere. Really cool! This episode shocked me as a kid, but I watched it repeatedly afterwards.
