Love the dogs, horse too of course lol, , she seems like a beautiful girl. Love all animals especially dogs. She figured out to walk over the water thats great. Great shelter to get you out of the snow, i need to do more shelter nights as oppose to the hot tent. Enjoyed the video, it is difficult to take down in the snow or rain

I’m looking forward to trying the set up style that takes a 10x10 tarp and one pole and sets up kinda like a pyramid. With a hot tent I’d have to pack a stove.

Sometimes I miss my horse, but all the time, I miss horse camping. Thank you so much, my friend, for posting this. One of the best videos I've seen in a long time. (ain't had much time to email you back, but I made 15 minutes to watch this masterpiece) Keep up the good work.

Thanks brotha. No sweat on the email, I really doubt I’ll buy a stove anyway. I might make one out of a five gallon metal bucket. I also need to see if the one I have will fold up.

Miss Wyoming terribly, so thank you for sharing your adventures. Bakers Tent is a good option. Period correct and allows you to enjoy the warmth of a fire. God bless!

Smoking a pipe is a whole skill set of its own. Several things to learn. If you do it just right, you can smoke a whole bowl, without puffing like crazy, on one light. I only smoke occasionally, but it’s somehow so friggin relaxing. Glad you’re getting a bigger tarp too. Lean-to shelters in winter are for down sleeping bags. People back then had less tech, but they weren’t stupid. 🙂

My tobacco was very dry, I need some fresh stuff.

@jimf1964 6 ай бұрын
@@OverOnTheWildSide I wasn’t making a criticism of your smoking technique. I didn’t see enough to say one way or the other. Just commenting because almost no one knows how anymore. Dry tobacco just needs a little moisture. Soak a strip off wood or something in water, wipe it off, then stick it in the bag for a day. You don’t want to wet it, just add some humidity. Keep up the good work!
@OverOnTheWildSide
@OverOnTheWildSide 6 ай бұрын
@@jimf1964 thanks I’ve heard of rejuvenating dry tobacco but wasn’t really sure how to go about it. I’ll give that a try. And yes I agree, it’s kind of a lost art. I’ve never really got it down myself.
@jimf1964
@jimf1964 6 ай бұрын
@@OverOnTheWildSide Just try to not get it wet. It’s only humidity that you want, and not too much or it won’t burn. If you’re interested, I’ll give you some tips. My grandpa had a pipe in his mouth pretty most of the day, and he told me a couple things, and I picked up one or two. It’s not complicated or anything, but a few tips makes it much more agreeable a past time.

I do have a Baker but it’s heavy canvas and the sides are excessive to me. I want to have one made with lighter weight canvas and where the angled roof would terminate at the ground, rather than two or three feet of a vertical back.

I bet! Through my experiments that’s basically what I decided I wanted (without knowing they exist). I want to try this one-pole set up that I’ve seen and I might just go back to a whelen design. However I plan to have detachable sides so I can use the tarp. The other problem is it’s later than my 1860 era, but for winter camping I’m ready to abandon that.

That was an excellent winter camp! The tarps set up and worked pretty decently. I’m pretty sure most bushcraft/camping videos out there are at least 60% or more pre-staged. I know how long it takes me to process firewood and such by hand… and some of what I see just doesn’t ring true with the “I went for a hike and here’s my perfect camp setup” 😂 I love when there’s plenty of clearly chainsawn stumps conveniently located at the “remote wild campsite I’ve never seen before” too. What were those three animals out there at 0:27? Your horse was quite keyed into them.

That’s a great point, as a video maker myself I try not to accuse them of cheating but I’m glad to hear it. Because I see these guys presumably gathering enough wood to make a small cabin and then firewood for an all-night longfire and it seems really dubious. Those were elk! I guess I edited out the part where I talked about them. Whoops.
