Over On The Wild Side

Over On The Wild Side

Күн бұрын

I live offgrid and am working toward living a hunter gatherer lifestyle combined with other bushcraft and homestead lifestyle skills. It's just me, my three dogs, my eight horses, two goats and eleven chickens out here in the sagebrush hills or at my farm property on a creek.
A few years ago I made the decision to finally live the life I'd wanted to live since I was young and these videos are of me learning, and practicing the skills needed for that lifestyle. Life is a whole lot better Over on the Wild Side!

I am trying to.learn as much as I can about how our ancestors lived. Feeling healthy finally is the way I intend on staying. No poisonous drugs or experimental vacs. for me thank you. Very enjoyable videos. I applaud your desire to move to a more primitive, less tech.- driven (?) lifestyle with activities centered on the cowboy world. We are out there! I really look forward to seeing more practical, hunter/gatherer and cowboy outdoor content. Should be fun. I like your comment that you are learning as you go. Honesty...good! I like your videos, a lot. We're all learning. I wear wool almost every day and have been doing so for many years. One thing though, don't let it get wet. :) Dry wool is awesome at keeping you warm, especially when layered. And on warm days, a single layer of wool won't overheat you. But wet wool is no good. Wet wool holds water, making it very heavy. It also takes what seems like forever to dry. To dry it, ring out the water. Then lay it flat on a rack. If you hang it, it will stretch a mile. And then wait. So there you have it, as you discovered, don't get your wool wet. When wet, it's warming properties no longer exist. And never put wet wool in a warm clothes dryer. The heat will shrink it down to child size.

First time viewer here. So I’m a big fan of wool also….though I never sat in a river. Not on purpose anyway 😀. They aren’t supposed to keep you warm in a stream, but be warmer than other fabrics once you get out. Squeezing out the water would help a lot too, and not be a cheat. Having some artificial fibres in wool helps make it a little tougher….or at least that’s what they say. I love my wool because I live up in Canada and I work outside, inside, outside, inside all day everyday, amd wool is way more forgiving for temps. Just a little hot or cold with polyester fleece and I’m uncomfortable, but with wool? Way way better. And even a super thin wool undershirt makes a huge difference in the cold. I liked your video. I think I’ll subscribe and learn a bit more about you. Thanks for posting this.

There's something surreal about a modern day cowboy larping like an old school wild west cowboy by a campfire using period correct equipment saying "Life is good." A statement echoed by California inspired backpackers and thru hikers. I guess deep down, no matter what background you come from, we all experience the wilderness the same way, just with our own personal quirks.

interesting modification to the diamond fly. i can see how that would work well as long as the wind isn't blowing directly into the open front of the tent. in my experience the advantage of wool over cotton or synthetics has mostly to do with the moisture the body produces while being active in the cold. it insulates and reduces that chilled clammy feeling on the skin that makes ya shiver and shake. as far as direct immersion into cold water, it'll keep ya alive longer than cotton but probably not comfortable. i enjoyed the video.
@OverOnTheWildSide
@OverOnTheWildSide 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks man, good points. Where I am the wind mostly comes from an expected direction. Cause yeah, otherwise it’s a balloon. Good point about the wool in cold weather conditions.

There is a tent design called the Whelan that is open in front and has flaps or wings that extend on the sides .might give you room for the dogs.

I just googled it. It’d be interesting to see how it does in the wind. My goal is to have flaps that’s close in rather than out like wings.

Thanx a Mingo ol pard! I appreciate your being. Extremely motivational. As I can't fit into the mold modern society expects. This is a lifestyle I'm still working towards. It's amazing how powerful the matrix is. But to be able to completely cut ties with it...az god intended all the way around.

Unfortunately I can’t travel or camp for about the next year or so because of family issues but watching you brings me back and man I miss my Sonoran desert.

Somehow I missed your comment before. Thanks for the feedback and I hope you’re able to get back to it soon. I love the Arizona desert. (I’m guessing that’s the Sonora you mean)

That's know-how. I also recommend a 'soogans"--- canvas cowboy bedroll (from Cariola's, Elko).

Bedrolls are wonderful, the problem is that since I focus on 1860 I’m pretty restricted. No one I know has seen bedrolls show up historically until the late 1880’s if I remember right.
