Cowboy Coffee and Campfire Cooking! Green Beret Bushcraft Camp Part Five

Part Five of the Green Beret Bushcraft Camp Build using traditional gear and hand tools only! During this episode I use a natural spring for water, show you my favorite fire lay that I call the "elevator fire lay", show you how I make my coffee, and cook some oatmeal for breakfast.
This series is about a return to more traditional bushcraft skills and enjoying myself doing a solo overnight camping trip, while building the bushcraft camp with more traditional bushcraft gear. I have chosen to use vintage camping gear like an Oilskin Tarp, a selection of leather and waxed canvas items, and some hand forged items that are truly one-of-a-kind like my marlinspike. In addition, there are some items that would be considered more modern mixed in there.
The focus of this series was not teaching the skills by the numbers; it was meant to show "skills in context" as they would be used in a bushcraft camp setup.

When I brew my "Cowboy" coffee I keep a little cold water on the side. Add grounds when water is warm, let come to rolling boil for 2-3 minutes. Add the cold water and that will pull all the grounds to the bottom. My old man used to grab a cold rock from the lake to do the same thing as the water. The boiling pulls a little more acid out of the beans ... smooth cup o joe.

Moccasins, my favorite footwear, the preferred footwear of woodsman for years (hard sole or soft sole, low cut or high top as terrain or weather dictates). Coffee and Oatmeal simple and quick, perfect. I like to add a little butter if I have it handy. Really enjoying this series.

All jokes aside, I’m diggin’ the format and think it’s pretty cool to see the basic stuff like coffee and breakfast, I get to learn something from it as well as get ideas for what to bring and do when I’m out in the woods, so thanks for that and looking forward to the next episode.

Yes ! But those things are made in Covid land, and I've had more than a few that crapped out after 3-4 uses. That's why you should always have other means available for fire making... Extra lighter(s), Hurricane matches, ferocerium "fero" rod, magnesium shavings bar, magnifying glass... ...

Great video as always and it's also relaxing to watch. You're doing are great service for everyone that wants to learn about bushcrafting techniques etc. I've always had a great amount of respect for the SF guys. I am a retired paratrooper and went to jumpmaster school in the 1980s in Bad Tolz, "West Germany" when 10th group had a small detachment stationed there running the school. The team members there were the most professional and no nonsense soldiers I've ever had the pleasure to train with and be trained by. Airborne!

Where we go hiking/backpacking there are plenty of lakes and streams in the area we frequent. Only thing we have to worry about is purification and not drinking water sources that are contaminated with mercury (etc.) from mining. Whenever you find a water source like the spring you found, it really simplifies life. ;) Great video. Thank you.

The Australian ‘swagmen’ used to use their bush pots as their primary water container when walking from jobs, including during the middle of summer when temps in the sun get up to 117 degrees F. The main issue that stops people from doing this these days is that we don’t want to have to carry the pot in our hands all the time, but if you could come up with a way to make a large bush pot with a screw on lid that sealed properly so it could be carried in the top of a pack without spilling I reckon you’d make a fortune, that would another function to the already very versatile bush pot. The Vargo ‘Bot’ (bottle pot) is an example but it’s too small for carrying a decent supply of water and would need a bail handle etc but would great, as long as your next camp site where you would use the bush pot for cooking is also near water to replenish your supply until your next camping spot. But a 32 Oz bottle of water on your belt and another 120 Oz bush pot full of water with a sealed lid in your pack to replenish your bottle from every hour in summer 👍🏻

During my hitchhiking days I camped in a field with trees keeping me hidden from the road and in the middle of the night the road construction people set up the lights which I slept through, I even slept through them turning on the lights. In Europe we call this style "turkish coffee", and for a full cultural appropriation (or how I see it, appreciation :P ) we call the cream "caimac". Since I learned how to make it a few years back, I've donated all my other coffee-making devices and I'm left with a simple pot and the stove. Love the brew and it also gives the process a sort of ritualistic aspect.

If you add a little cold water to the coffee right before you pour it, it helps drop the grounds to the bottom. Give it a try!

Can't beat cowboy coffee. I always made it in the Tactical Operations Center (TOC) on the last day or two at the National Training Center (NTC) during winter rotations. The large generators were usually taken down and only a small one was left on to power the radios. The small generators would trip if a coffee pot was connected.

I've been taking oatmeal when I head out for a long time, it's easy to pack, quick to make, I also had raisins.. Now for coffee, I usually will take the instant of the coffee bags (like tea bags) there also easy to pack and quick to make.
