I've enjoyed watching this video several times. The brass collar to control the self-eject on the tailstock is an excellent idea and I highly recommend it. I've similarly replaced the trip bar locking screw with a small clamp handle, it's slightly different as I've also fitted a swarf guard, bolted to the apron just above the trip bar; this was made from 25mm angle cut and filed to fit, tucking under the overhang of the bed and working well.

What a great piece of machinery, like the inside of a precision Swiss watch, wonderful, Colin the UK.

Hi Gerald Many thanks for the overview. A cracking lathe and I love the auto stop feature on the carriage feed. Looks like I need to start saving up for one. All the best. Andrew

Best modification I carried out was to fit a three phase motor and a variable frequency drive to my lathe. Smooth infinitely variable speed control. When facing , can start slow at periphery and increase speed as approach centre.

Andrew, can you provide details for the three phase modification?

Hi Gerald, Great video, thanks for sharing. I hope you produce more videos with the Cowells in use. I recently purchased one and I think they are a superb piece of kit. Regards, Paul

Really nice lathe. It's upsetting to think that we don't make machines like this anymore even though we have the most advanced CNC machine technology that could make them as good as a Cowell or even better.

They are still being produced by Cowells in the UK.
