Nice video! I'm an ag pilot in real life and I really appreciate that they included ag aviation in the game. They missed a lot though. Like someone else mentioned, we have a GPS system for this in real life. So we're not just eyeballing it. Also, in real life we set a constant power setting and don't touch the power much. We'll back the power off as the load lightens though. Which is also a shame they didn't do a good job simulating that. A lot of the work I do, we spray at 2 gallons per acre. So for a 40 acre field you'd need 80 gallons. You don't take off with 400 gallons and come back with 350. That doesn't make any sense. You want to avoid landing with a load. Air Tractor 802s also spray at around 160mph so 110knots is a bit slow. So I don't know why the game insists you're flying at 110knots. Another thing is that a lot of loads will have multiple fields. And a lot of fields will have multiple loads. So I don't know why you can't load up 650 gallons in the AT802 and do a couple fields in a mission. Or they could give you a big field that you need multiple loads for. Oh well. At least it made it into the game! Then again, it is a game. I had a day where I applied dry fertilizer to 160 acres of corn in an A188B. It took me 12 hours of flight time. I was putting out the fertilizer really heavy at around 150lbs per acre, so I would do a few passes and I'd be heading back to the loading pad. It was also three fields and they were all 15 to 20 miles away from the loading pad. So I ended up flying a few hundred miles without logging XC time. I get why stuff like that doesn't make it into the game. But I would have appreciated a slight bit more realism.

Oh that's cool! But thank you, glad you enjoyed! And those would be some awesome additions/changes! For their first attempt at all these missions I'm still happy it exists, but would be cool to see "Career Updates" (Similar to World/City Updates) where they evolve with new missions while also adding things to the existing modes! That would be neat 🙂

These missions in the sim got me interested in ag aviation, so I watched a few videos showing how it's done in real life and noticed a lot of the same differences you're pointing out here. I'm curious to learn more about the power bit. You say that power is typically kept pretty constant, which I've also seen in those real-world videos, but how can the power stay constant with so many sudden climbs and sharp turns in between low-altitude runs? In the sim (and this could be inaccurately modeled), if you maintain enough power for the maneuvering then you will consistently be overspeed over the field. Is there simply no speed limit in real life? I have to admit that I never really looked into ag aviation before, but now I think it has to be one of the most interesting and intense aviation jobs out there. Much respect to you and your fellow ag pilots!
@alexandermiller6317Ай бұрын
@@mfvreeland Great questions! It's all about energy management. What goes up must go down. In real life I fly a Cessna A188B (with a 400 HP engine). So usually, I'll aim to be spraying between 130mph and 140mph. When I pull out of the field I'm basically trading airspeed for altitude. I'll keep the nose up until I get down to around 95mph, which is my minimum safe turn speed (based on stall speed fully loaded at a 60 degree bank). Then I'll pitch to maintain 95mph until it's time to start descending into the field again. At this point I'll be trading altitude for airspeed. If I'm going too slow in the field, I'll add power at the top of the turn. If I'm too fast in the field, I'll pull the power back at the top of the turn. At the top of my turns is when I do any power adjustments, and I also have safety checks that I do there. Before going in for my first pass I have power settings that are good starting points depending on how much weight I have in the hopper. When it comes to maneuvering, in the A188B 95mph is good, but you have to be really careful in the turn. You have to have a solid understanding of your angle of attack. When I'm at the top of my turn at my slowest speed I take it really easy with the bank angle. I try to keep it around 45 degrees. If I am going to bank super hard it's either going to be right after I exit the field and still have all my speed (after all obstacles are clear) or as I'm diving into the field (before crossing any obstacles). I'll just say that banked 60 degrees at 140mph while descending is a completely different aerodynamic situation than being banked 60 degrees at 95 while pulling back on the stick trying to maintain altitude. I've hit 90 degrees numerous times. But again, definitely not at the slow part of the turn. Bank angle can also be used as a speed brake too lol. Turning around definitely takes practice. It's just a balancing and game though. You also have to think about the wind a lot. To answer your question about speed limit, there's no speed limit. The airplanes are equipped with flow control devises (not depicted in MSFS) that will adjust your flow to achieve the desired rate on the field based on your groundspeed. If you go too fast you could damage something in your system due to too much pressure (trying to keep up with your speed). But you'd have to be going really fast to do that. Like I said, I aim for 130-140. If I end up at 150 I'm not thinking "that was a bad pass". I'm thinking, "I need to pull the power back a little bit in this next turn". I really hate the nagging AI voice. If I had one of those in real life I'd quit flying lol. Ag aviation is awesome! Not many people know about it, but it's been great to me.

My dad was a crop dusting pilot for 40 years. Sun up til sun down usually Feb into november. He was called out to fly all around the country after he finished his season in eastern WA and was a legend in the crop dusting community. He always flew under power lines and always stayed low for accuracy. He attempted the craziest stuff, even among crop dusting pilots. He landed planes when the engine gave out on the top of cliff ledges, and went off of runways that were death traps all over the country that nobody else would fly. He did it until he found out he had cancer in 2022 which he passed away from in the beginning of 2023 at the age of 70. My grandpa Dan Faunce was also a crop dusting pilot and my uncle Greg Faunce was as well until he died from a plane crash on the job in 2016. It is not a job for the faint of heart. Love and miss you every day dad, Alan Faunce, known as the immortal ninja warrior god among crop dusters. ❤

In real life all crop dusters have a “lightbar” swath system mounted on the hood in front of the wind screen for guidance.i don’t see how anyone could spray effectively without one Maybe flight sim could update and get one on the air tractors. Crop dusters almost always “race track” the field always making left turns due to motor torque working the outsides of the field working their way inward
@alexandermiller6317Ай бұрын
Yes, exactly! It's also weird how they give you 400 gallons to spray a field that needs 50 gallons. There's no flow control on the airplane either so who knows what rate you e spraying it. They missed a lot lol.
@Cobalt135Ай бұрын
YES, MS so missed it. Crop dusters have the screen in cockpit that shows the field outline and swath paths that they modeled only fairly, but missed out on the light bar out on the cowling. That thing gives you directions to line up perfectly with your next swath. Everyone uses them now.

I grew up in a small community in the foothills of the Catskill Mtns of NY. One of our local aviators was Robbie Robinson. He was a WWII veteran and after the war, he began a crop dusting service in the valley. At first, he put a spray rig on Sterman aircraft, then Grumman came to him to help design the Grumman AG Cat. My childhood was filled with the sound of his radial engine bellowing through the valley and crop dusting the area fields. When I started flying, I would go land at his grass strip and visit and chat about his Aviation service as well as replacing the windscreen in the Piper Cherokee my family had part ownership.

Cool vid. I grew up wanting to be a crop duster. I was talked out of it by actual California crop dusting operators complaining of constant drift claims, as well as my own perceived impossibility of breaking into the business. When I finally climbed into a real crop duster I never forgot that pesticide smell that permeated even a perfectly clean airplane and that's something MS obviously can't simulate, but you could by opening up a bottle of Malathion and putting it on your desk, under your nose, as you play! If you want to become a crop duster I was told it's important to become an A&P mechanic, too, and not just a pilot, so you can work on your own airplane. (Every job has its warts, as they say...) Cheers, y'all!

The amount of times I see ground crew walking around the props is hilarious. Yea, I think the start and stop commentary is a bit bugged. I also don't believe the start/stop gray areas on the EFB were accurate to what you actually did. Minor bugs that'll hopefully be addressed. One realistic feature that's missing are the power lines that typically go up and down the farm roads. Those would have really added a higher level of difficulty on your entry and exits of the field. Another great video, thanks man!

Farmer in real life. Grow wheat and barley on the hills of the Palouse in Washington State. This is really cool they added this in flight simulator. We use ag pilots to spray our stuff all the time. I have lots of videos on my phone of them coming in low and dropping chemicals on our fields and dipping and dodging through the hills. About a year and a half ago my dad, brother and I were working on harvest equipment and getting it ready and one of the ag pilots started spraying some round up on a field of ours to kill the weeds in it because they had gotten out of control. Well we were taking a break and my dad had gotten a phone call so my brother and I decided to go outside and watch the crop duster fly while we waited. We were watching him for about 30 minutes and I was taking videos on my phone of him flying around as I always do. He came in for a pass and was trying to dodge trees on his left side, power lines on his right while keeping the plane at the right height. While doing all this he didn’t see the power lines in front of him and hit them head on. I remember standing there and yelling “oh sh!t, he’s going to die” When he hit the power line it sounded like a gunshot going off. And my dad came running thinking someone had just shot at us. Thankfully when he hit it, the line wrapped up in the prop and flung it and wrapped it around the tip of the wing. He was able to keep the plane all the way held to the left on the yoke and land it safely. Made me realize how dangerous and how brave those pilots are to do such a job. Every time I see a crop duster flying around I think about that day and it still puts fear in me. I managed to catch the entire thing on video but have not shared it anywhere out of respect for the pilot and the spraying company. Just a crazy story I thought I’d share to you. Not sure if you’ll ever see this comment or not but I hope someone does and it tells them just how dangerous this job actually is. A lot of respect to the ag pilots out there. My dads good friend is an ag pilot and he told my dad one day “its not a matter of if you crash, it’s a matter of when you crash” he has taken 3 planes to the ground and survived everyone of them. He is still flying fields to this day!

The campaign mode is so broken. For example, for the sky diving missions, after climbing to 10000ft and letting the skydivers jump, you basically literally have to do a nose dive and descend thirty million feet a minute to the runway and the campaign operator will still be "you were too slow." On the RNAV training, you're supposed to keep the CDI centered, but you could have it straighter than satan's cock and the sim still won't give you the green checkmark saying you're doing it correctly. I can name over a dozen other bugs like this. Basically the only way to do these missions realistically at this point is taking the mission indicators in the corner as light suggestions. Other than the game giving you 0/low scores in bugged scoring categories, I'm glad you're having as much fun as I am lmao.
@DavidGagnon3Ай бұрын
Actually on the skydiving stuff that sounds about right. I'm a skydiver and I can tell you most of the time the plane lands before most of the skydivers on the load. Once the last person jumps the pilot basically nose dives the plane and get to the runway as soon as humanly possible. I had a problem with my equipment once that prevented me to jump so I had to come back down with the plane it's a crazy ride.
@kzendo6542Ай бұрын

For spraying there are some rules for what I know in order to do it quickly and with the minumum danger. You start spraying from the ouside of the field to the inside because of the weight of the airplane that decrease as you spray more and more. Every minuts lost and you loose money so do it quickly , turn back as soon as possible and avoid to kill youself because the aircraft at start has a big weight. Of course, as you are a simmer, the way you have sprayed is not the right one! Nice video anyway, thanks for showing the new plane. I don'have MSFS2024 yet because for the new one I neeed a new computer and want to wait until after new years in order to see what is good and what is wront with this release. Looking your video with the new 2k monitor that I have received yesterday is really nice. I think that spraying in NZ must be very a really nice experience given the hilly landscaspe they have there and the thousand farmstrip with incredible approach. I think I will do a lot of them in the future. With the new ground texture I think they could be spectacular.
@FritzWeinrebeАй бұрын
@@antonioiozzi291 there are about 10 different patterns to choose from when spraying. I guess the most favorite is probably the Race-track pattern. Where you start your A-B line is mostly determined by wind direction. Most patterns start at the edge of the field but some can start in the center. This is to prevent drift into other fields. In NZ for example they start on the bottom of the hill and then work their way up because lighter aircraft climbs better.

Can I just start a helicopter Medivac career im very proficient on the bell or do I have to go through all the ppl and certifications which I don’t mind but it takes forever to load the training missions
@CowTownАй бұрын
Yes you'll need to get through the other careers first and work your way toward it!

I swear I did it just as fast as you and got 0% on my time so dont beat yourself up on the 62% 😅 mad it tanked my rating so bad but super fun activity to fly on!!!
@CowTownАй бұрын
Oh no! Thankfully it doesn't tank the money you make because of the reputation but definitely hoping the big update next week can address these things!

I'll probably never do these missions because I hate flying tail draggers, so cool to see these here.

Someone please answer this question for me. What does crop dusting pay if your in freelance and start a company? Is it worth it or is VIP and cargo still a better option
@CowTown25 күн бұрын
Vip/Cargo are definitely the best paying. Crop is about 100k give or take
@danpranke366324 күн бұрын
@@CowTown I was hoping crop dusters would be at least 200k lol

No body/legs/arms in the cockpit, that's a bit of a shame. Hopefully they'll add that in the future.

I mean I'd probably be turning it off anyways, don't need that getting in the way of seeing certain things on the instrument panel haha

Crop dusting in the helicopter is not fun
@CowTownАй бұрын
Sorry to hear you're not enjoying it! I've been having a blast with it, definitely try turning on the assists to see if that helps out! (That's what I use for the helicopters)

Honestly the career mode is ruined by having to micromanage speeds and headings. You cant even enjoy what you are doing. How about "maintain a speed between 100-120 knots"? Are there any crop dusting pilots in the comments that can comment on whether maintaining that exact speed would be necessary?
@CowTownАй бұрын
Crop dusters typically stick around 130 MPH/112 Knots when spraying. Flying too fast can result in uneven spray distribution, while flying too slow might cause excessive drift.
@slade8212Ай бұрын
In most of the missions there is leniency. Like altitudes they give you about 120 ft +/- and speeds seem to be around 5-10 knots

Real Crop dusters have to micromanage these things or they won’t have a job or a life. Crop dusters have brass balls with the finesse of a blue angel, the respect I have for those pilots is way up there.
