In this compelling three-part episode we delve into the contentious issue surrounding the recent decision by the Natural Resources Commission (NRC) in Michigan to close coyote hunting for three months, from April 15th to July 15th. This decision, allegedly made under the influence of social pressure rather than scientific evidence, stands in violation of the North American model of wildlife conservation, specifically its principle that science should guide wildlife policy. Steve Windom, Director of Development and Membership at Michigan United Conservation Clubs (MUCC), joins us to provide an in-depth analysis of the situation.
Through our discussion with Windom, we explore how this decision not only impacts hunters and anglers in Michigan but also poses a potential threat to the integrity of wildlife management across the North American continent. Windom argues that this move represents the beginning of a slippery slope towards managing natural resources based on emotional responses rather than biological data, a trend that could undermine the rights of outdoorsmen and women and jeopardize healthy ecosystems.
Listeners will gain insight into the foundational principles of the North American model of wildlife conservation, the role and responsibilities of the NRC, and the broader implications of the coyote hunting season closure. The episode also highlights the importance of community involvement and advocacy in preserving hunting, fishing, and trapping rights, urging listeners to lend their voices to the cause.
Whether you're a dedicated hunter, angler, conservation enthusiast, or simply someone interested in the delicate balance of our ecosystems, this episode offers a thought-provoking look at the challenges facing wildlife conservation today and the critical role of science in guiding policy decisions. Join us as we navigate the complex interplay of biology, policy, and public perception in the quest to sustain our outdoor heritage.

0:25 "...caved to perceived public pressures..." What public pressure? I never heard anything about this until it was a done deal. Those public pressures must have been in secret, hidden from the public. There was no news about this at all, at least, not in public. I'll just speculate that certain interest groups talked to the Governor and political contributions were part of the discussion. Every member of the Natural Resources Commission was appointed by a Dimocrat. Hey, MUCC! This is a note to you, too. Maybe if sportsmen all over the state knew about this ahead of time, we could have made our ideas known in time to stop it.

More loss of bunnies, turkeys, fawns, pheasants. How does saving a nuisance spieces help us? We did fine before the DNR started making bad decisions 5 years ago.

Social pressure from where is it from Michigan people or is this comming from outside the state Its sad to think that people from this state are that stupid if all wildlife management is done by social pressure and politicians were screwed and so are the wildlife of this state

From my understanding it started from a certain hunting group or a few people within that group. In this day and age, all sportsmen/sportswomen need to stand together since our rights are being chipped away slowly.

I live in Va. When it comes to fishing we have people putting restrictions on our creel limit. Taugtog fish for one example. Im only allowed 4 fish per day, none under 16". Not everyone fishes for these. They taste like crab or lobster. You gotta work hard for them. Somehow a group of people from Arkansas no whats best for the fish in the ocean. As they live in a freaking dessert. Scuba divers will tell me there are millions of them right where im fishing at. Yet Im only allowed four at 16'' or bigger. I hunt and fish. I think conservation is a good thing. Only if its done right.

Certainly not the first step, but definitely in the wrong direction. Hunting Groups pushing for APR’s is nothing more than social science either. 🙂 83 counties in Michigan.
