I bought my dad a red heeler pup in January 2018 around 5 months after he had his black lab put down and they instantly became best friends. My dad lives way out in French creek,wv and has fed “his deer” for over 20 years. This crazy dog made friends with the herd of deer and watches over them when dad is feeding them. It’s the craziest relationship I’ve ever seen, the deer, the dog, the dad. 😂

Heelers, red or blue are extremely territorial and very protective of their property, their cattle; or in this case, deer, and most importantly, their people!! A Buddy of mine and I were fishing a trout stream going through a pasture with Dairy cattle . Two Blue Heelers guarded the cattle and let us get nowhere near!😆😆Best guard dogs around!!👍👍

Nice story - I can envision it. That was kind of you to give your dad that type of companion, He was a special man to appreciate the natural order, not put bow ties and nail polish on the pup! Most dogs love to work, they want a job. They live for it! Used to take my husky lab to a ski mountain off season, late night to let her run - the deer love to play chase. What surprised me, which took me about a month to catch on... is when we arrived at the mountain, I'd often hear yipping up in the hills... Those were the foxes calling my dog to play! I'm in the 49th now, I got a husky Malamute boy who's not fixed. (Protects from brain cancer and hip dysplasia if left intact). But he gives off a very strong pheromone. What I've learned is the mama moose winter with him - give birth near him, then they come in to show us the baby within about 36 hours or less He gets along fine with the large game, yet small critters, newborn calves freak out the Malamute boy. He's always tethered, but Mama comes way too close to show the babies and there's always trouble - got to keep a close eye out in May She won't hurt my guy - when she comes too close with her baby and he barks like crazy, she uses her head to push him aside - she could just stomp him - moose kick forward sideways, any direction But they're friends - she's just trying to get him to calm down! Lol. Cuz chances are, if that calf is female? She'll be hanging out with m'boy when she's pregnant over the winter in another couple years, if she doesn't drive the cabs off from this area. That's a thing! Mama kicks you out of the basement pretty quick in the moose world! So then the juveniles will come along and hang out with him after they get kicked out from time to time. They don't stay long - but they know they're safe Everything's great, until he sees/smells new babies Which often results in ugly flying unicorns We were charged my first winter here, because I wasn't expecting it, didn't know what was going on - so I turned into the incredible hulk, took out his back legs, his lunging power, picked up my dog and fell down behind a vehicle. This guy can pull hundreds of pounds in a cargo sled, when he jumps up and I'm hanging on to him? He can take me airborne! Gotta take out that powerful back end! There's been quite a learning curve the first few years - I'm no expert at this - still in training The first time a mama brought her calf right up to him, nose to nose -it was pretty scary. I did not know what was going to happen to the dog! they never come that close any other time But all winter, the mama moose and my dog get along fine - they know they're safe - if moose birth up in the hills? The bears will take their babies during birthing, before they're even out. So we accommodate them on our property. Even plow and shovel out for moose They have their space, the dog has his But the moose's relationship with humans is also fascinating They birth near humans, in the gullies on the side of our highways, places where they're safe, places that are plowed out cuz they take the path of least resistance. They always hang out during hunting season - they're down by us! You can be in suburban neighborhood, come around the corner and there's a huge Bull moose hanging out cuz they don't like walking through deep snow. They'll go on the roads, up your walkway! (And I mean huge - I'm from the northeast, I'm used to game - these things are humongous) So they're part of reality, they're usually okay if you leave them be - the only problem is birthing season Then about a month later, they head up to the hills for the summer where there's plentiful food They always say goodbye to us before they head up. I've gotten used to it I don't normally repeat these stories, they sound silly or cheap, when they we put them in words, yet I clearly hear the sentiment coming through your words And I'm going to get a game camera - cuz every time this happens, I don't have time to take photos and videos! I got the dog in one hand and a hole puncher in the other! Not so much for the moose - but bear will smell newborn calves and they'll show up - so I got to be ready for anything I take these things seriously. Don't normally share these stories or go on like this, especially on KZbin - but since you put it out there yeah. Dogs have great relationships with others besides humans. I consider it socializing my Huskies malamutes and outdoor dogs, when I keep them in the wild - that's their social life. Goes far beyond dog parks! Red heelers and malamutes don't normally hang around poodles! More likely to be running with wild game (Nothing against poodles of course.)

Coyotes do this... it is a lure. They send one from their pack hoping the buck will be bold enough to persue into an ambush. That is why he seems bold in his approach but then has no hesitation turning to flee or acting as if he is dumb and doesnt know whether to actually attack the deer or run. Coyotes take down bucks that size and bigger with ambush attacks because the buck can likely escape them if they all tried to approach it at once.

@@JSProjectWild The ones here in NJ are massive, I have them eat out of my hands. But damm they look between a Great Dane and a horse !! They could easily stomp or gouge a coyotee.

That's just how it starts, the coyote will continue harassing the deer over a period of days sometimes.. until he can get in a bite.

Coyotes are cowards. But they can be dangerous around kids and small dogs. They don't bother my chow though
