here are some tips and tricks i've found hepful for new sewers. another good way to make your pillows less expensive is to make your own pillow forms. using a very inexpensive nuetral color. and for the polyfil i actually buy the most inexpensive pillows i can find at wal-mart.This last black friday target had a sale on body pillows and i stocked up). this is great, bc it is actual pillow stuffng, it's less expensive than polyfil, you can use the pillow as a form, & it let's you customize the size that you want where as using a form you are limited. i make a lot of memory pillows for friends & family members ( and friends of theirs) and i find that my range of pillows can range from very small to very large. for those who don't know how to hem, it isn't difficult. take about a 1/4'' seam allowance, press it, now open it fold it in half & again, lay it over and sew. if you feel that it is too small for you to sew bc you are new to sewing. increase the original seam allowance fold to 1/2 ". for those who DON'T have a surger don't fret. you can use a zig zag stitch using a 2 stitch length. letting one side of the zigzag go off of the side of the fabric. if you want your pumpkins to start off frayed. snip the edges carefully so as to NOT cut into the seam, cutting about 1/2"-1" apart. then trow them into the washer 2x them dry on low heat. If you want more fraying thow in an extra layer of cloth around the edges of the pumkin. the more clothe the more fraying you will have. it's alwy a good idea to pess your seams open. i know it's an extra step. but it will take away the extra bulk when you fold things and press your hems as well. it makes them look nice and clean. remember it's the smll things that make the difference. to help you sew a straight stitch. layer 3-5 pieces of painters tape with the let side being even. put the needle down and measure out however far your seam allowance is. this makes a "shelf" that the cloth can follow along and won' roll up on like i can on a stitch guide foot. and is a LOT less expensive that a new foot. it also helps keep your layers even when you keep that shelf doen the width of your sewing machine, as you can buy a roll of 1" painters tape from the dollar store and it will last forever.
@TheLatinaNextDoor2 жыл бұрын
I never thought about throwing the fabric in the dryer for fraying! Great tip!
@marytramp56782 жыл бұрын
@@TheLatinaNextDoor i do a little quilting and i learned this from doing some rag quilts. same with surging tip. i was always so disappointed when i would come across a terrific project and they used a surger. as so many sewers just can't afford a surger. especially during these hard times. when i came across a site that explained how a zigzag off the side works fine and the close stitch makes it close together.

I would Never cut my fabric the same size as my pillow forms/cushions, because they shrink while washing, and drying!
@TheLatinaNextDoor Жыл бұрын
I have learned that it is always best to wash fabrics before sewing them into anything. This prevents shrinking in the future and has worked wonderfully for me.
