Not the horse death in the Neverending Story...truly still scarred from that.

We had similar reservations about The Warm Hands of Ghosts but I *love* this book--might very well end up being my favorite of the year

Really glad Warm Hands of Ghosts really worked for you ! And totally agree with Lotus Empire, I think its my least fav in the trilogy but the first chunk was some of the best, just felt the end was very rushed.

You should read Labutat’s other book, the maniac! Which is a bit more novelised and honed in on one person - John von Neumann. It explores a lot of the same themes but on a grander kind of scale

Your reaction to Long Live Evil sounds a lot like my reaction to Lost in Austen! I just couldn't stand how this woman who claimed to be a superfan of Pride & Prejudice seemingly knew nothing about the Regency era!

I've only read Chilling Effect so far in that series and enjoyed it but I am with you on the romance and the licorice 😂😂

"WWI historical fantasy" are all of my buzzwords. 😂 But yes I'm so glad to see you gave The Warm Hands of Ghosts five stars. I really enjoyed it and thought it captured the horror of WWI well while also blending in an interesting fantasy/mystery. Pretty much every point you brought up about WWI in general along with my general love of history and the new All Quiet on the Western Front is what really sparked my WWI hyperfixation and this whole time I was just like "Angela gets it." If When We Cease to Understand the World is that short I might have to check it out!

Yay for Warm Hands of Ghosts. Based on other things you have mentioned, I figured it might be up your alley. I also agree that the voice of the novel was very different from Winternight, but that also felt completely appropriate to what this novel was about.

The first book thing in Long Live Evil didn’t bother me at all because I can see being so sick and just passively indulging a loved one but not caring or paying attention until your attention is actually gripped.

Spoilers for long live evil Not recognizing or knowing the past of your favorite character was the last straw for me 😂 at that point you atleast know the rough details of their origin even if the first book is a blurr. And like I enjoy Key, he was a highlight but his ability to regenerate was a red flag for me that he was special and she knew she was in a fantasy world with fantasy tropes. The dumb dumb was driving me a tad mad 😂

@ I mean, yeah. 🤣 She starts out believing it’s only a book and the people aren’t real and it’s like, obviously that’s not going to be true girlie. But to be fair, I don’t think I’d survive very well in my favorite books either. 😅 The reader would be like “get your act together you dumb dumb.” 💀

I’ve just bought When we cease to understand the world - it sounds so interesting.! Might also have to try The warm hands of ghosts. Good to hear you are really enjoying Vorkosigan - I love all the books but that arc that starts with Memory is so good. I predict you are really going to enjoy A Civil Campaign. I’m not a physicist (and did biology and geology as my sciences in high school) but this emoji 👩🔬 came up when I typed physicist…

Glad you've had a great reading month! 🥰 As a mathematician, this is how physics makes me feel: 😵💫😵💫😵💫 (physics is so darn confusing to me, it barely makes any sense, if at all! 😂) I've read two 2 stars books in November, both for r/fantasy bingo (I really need to stop trying Mary Robinette Kowal's stories, I give them nothing but 2 stars 😅The Spare Man was rough, it was uber rich Karen complaining every 2 seconds and abusing her privilege left and right, all while telling us how she _abhors_ the idea of abusing her privilege. And as a mystery fan, it was a bad mystery, imo at least). You'd think it means that I had a horrible reading month, but nope! I mostly have positive memories because I picked up (and read 2 out of 3) The Loom Saga by Elise Kova, which confirmed my long time suspicion that I actually really like steampunk! 🥰

WW1 is such a frustrating war to follow. Lol and please go on a tangent about physicists and chemistry in the 20th century because I am ready. I prepared all year for this and I agree that Oppenheimer is like the consulting business major of physicists. Like originality? Never heard of him. When We Cease to Understand was such a fun book (although the Heisenburg chapters were rough to read). I like how it seemed to shift from 90-95% fact to slowly building more dramatization as we advance in science and get closer to ceasing to understand. Ahhhhh. My favorite book (that I finished this month) was By the Fire We Carry - a nonfiction covering the Supreme Court Case that restore some large Indian Reservations in Oklahoma (which despite being very recent, I knew nothing about). Such a great audiobook.

The Warm Hands of Ghosts has been on my radar since it first came out and I was interested in it. I own it and haven't read it yet. My reading goal next year is to read only books I already own and not buy any new books so it'll be read in 2025. Your review makes me so excited to read it.
