Hey guys! I'm Alexandra Gater and I show you how to do rental-friendly upgrades and DIY projects on a budget. New videos every Saturday! Today I'm turning a living room filled with hand-me-down furniture into a cozy, Scandi-style living room. That means neutral decor layered in with lots of texture and natural accents.

Scandi style is my absolute favorite. This room looks SO beautiful, but I think it is a bit overstyled for scandi style (too many pompoms, ratan and macrame...) so it looks more like "neutral boho" than actual scandi. I also don't understand the choice to have a teeny tiny bar table as a "dining nook", and then fill the rest of the space with plants, when that nook could fit a larger dining table which she could use to have friends over for dinner.
@CarmelQTful
@CarmelQTful 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I would say it’s more like zen BoHo. Scandi style generally sticks to lighter woods with no black. However, it came out nice 😊

The dining nook was my favorite part, I am even planning to do something similar in my place. I would have never even imagined anything similar before watching this video. I am grateful we all have different ways to see the world, that way we can learn from each other. It would be so annoying if everybody thought the exact same way I do. No chance of growing.

I agree that it is a bit too much decorated to be Scandi, and too dark in some places. Nevertheless it is beautiful. However, the ottoman does not fit that well size och colourwise. Greetings from Sweden, we live Scandi😀

@@liza1809 Uhm... Of course it's great that we all have different ways to see the world. The nook is beautiful indeed. I'm just pointing out a little practical issue. If that's the only space she has to eat meals, then it would be more useful to have a table that fits more than 2 people, because now she can't have more than 1 guest over. It would have been perfectly possible to fit a table for 4 people there and still get the same kind of look/vibe. Cheers

There's lots of things to love about this makeover: the curtains, the plants, the ottoman, creating a dining nook, the wacky window set up. Things I found that didn't sit right only imo of course: the custard colour and the warmth of the rug against the 'coolness' of the grey couch, the over use of black metal and I know you love that sort of lighting in the nook...to me it looks untidy and unfinished. I really enjoy your videos even though your design style isn't mine. I always find lots of your combinations work better than I would have expected and you're a fount of great ideas and resources. I hope you take my thoughts just as a discussion around design choices and is not at all meanspirited in intent.

Agree 100% the couch and rug- separately they are both great pieces, but they just weren’t vibing together! And for a Scandinavian look, I think there was too many black accents. Scandinavian is more whites and natural woods tones and textures.

I love the butter color for the nook wall that add warm tones- I might have added a bench there for one of the plants that could be pulled more into the room for extra seating or one under the window. Wish the sofa wasn't grey but more cream or beige but its the perfect size ! Love you embracing another design style and shining !!!

Yes, but it's way better than my first attempt. I made the mistake of hanging curtain hooks too close to the window, so there wasn't room to pull each curtain fully back. We had to fill in the holes and drill again. The final window in this video looks great, Alexandra's made it a feature instead of just a window.
@tn-t

The more I watch Alexandra's videos, the more I realize why she's actually primarily an interior decorator and not a designer. The final result is always wonderful and nice to look at, but often lacks functionality and even mismatches styles. For example, several things in this video hit the scandi mark, but overall it's actually more contemporary Boho. Then again, I'm sure it fits the customer's requirements and wishes, so kudos to Alexandra for always delivering.

@@RA-go5qk Sending you some love from a fellow fan of Team AG! 💚And I'm pleased you wished this episode into being exactly when you most needed it. I lost my own dad suddenly 19 years ago of a heart attack when he was still young (47... only 8 years older than I am now 😰), so I have no frame of reference for what it's like to be worrying about a parent in the hospital like that, and can only imagine how difficult it is... though I don't think there's ever a "right" way or time to lose a parent, even though it's something most of us will go through at some point (the knowledge of which doesn't really make it easier!). Maybe I'm making too many assumptions - I know having heart failure isn't necessarily the end of the road depending on various factors (forgive me, I'm not a doctor and got my medical education from ER/Grey's Anatomy/etc! 🙈)... but the point I'm probably clumsily trying to make is, a random person on the internet is thinking of you and sending you strength and courage, and hoping you continue to find distraction and soul-soothing in both KZbin and nature 🌳🍁🍂🧡

Looks nice. I feel like it's a mix of scandi color pallette and Alexandra's usual feminine boho aesthetic. Not really a fan of the macrame pendant light. Just looks awkward and cheap in that space. (The cord itself is really cool, though.) I also think they should have positioned the curtain rod brackets further out -- the curtain runs into them now so there's an awkward empty bar on both sides. And the curtain would have made the window look bigger if it hung outside to frame the window frame area, rather than inside.

I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure about the creamy accent wall color. But WOW! Love the warmth in that nook.

Styles that I love are usually a mix of Scandi colours, vintage/cottage core furniture/wallpaper but still a little bit minimalism (clean lines) incorporated. I really think this makeover turned out so well for such a small space. Keep up the good work. And James, I really appreciate the editing grind.

I really loved the green for the walls. It wud have matched with the green ottoman. And also the design that Alana had picked out for the desk under the TV. I liked the style alot better.

I love it. If it was my place I would want a low table and chairs that I could pull over when I had company. I would put a picture over the table for height.

I think that cream paint color in the little dining nook really just warms up that corner so much and makes it very inviting. It all looks great, well done. Love the curtain tie backs too

It’s weird that when you first pick out odd bits of furniture for the rooms, I don’t always like some pieces but when you put them altogether they look absolutely fabulous! Well done all of you. ❤

It's beautiful and definitely looks warm and inviting. The only thing I would change is the dining table to a bigger one and the hanging lamp in the dining nook just doesn't fit there in my opinion, but I am no expert. lol

Hi Alexandra! Would you do a plant room? I have a room dedicated to importing, growing and propagating plants, with a side that's like art desk/station... I wonder if that's something that could be styled since it's not like a "standard" kind of space?

Love the way the curtains are and the tiebacks! I’m also seriously out of touch with furniture prices. I had no idea that 300 for a console table was a deal.

Ahhh, so nice! The sofa is beautiful--I'm checking the link; I'd like it. I'd have to add "something" next to it for my drinks and snacks. I agree with comment about having a lower dining table. After having only bar seating in my kitchen for several years, I bought a small regular-height table and chairs, which fit in a little nook near it, and now use that 95% of the time.
