I'm so glad you mentioned generators! I'm in a small van and a big rv parked sideways in front of me. The generator was running all night and was so loud it vibrated my walls! Also, try not to park facing someones van/rv's if you know you will be cranking you engine during the night( you know, those of us that don't have heaters). It's just rude to have headlights blast into your windows...even if blocked out. Thanks for all of your tips!

Those are a few great points as well! That exhaust gets sucked right in, especially if you have a fan running! And the headlights thing creeps me out more than anything. Whenever someone sits with their lights on around us, it makes me feel awkwardly watched as well! 😬 thanks for watching!

Seattle seems to be pretty forgiving so to speak, many large cities are so strict, and they enforce their laws. Many of the vehicles shown in your video would never make an entire night. I hope everyone is living the life they want, it’s a big world out here!
@CozyLivingMachine
@CozyLivingMachine 3 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct! Seattle, Portland and San Francisco (in some areas) are very much the same in that they view vehicles like this with a. different perspective. For Seattle in particular, one's RV actually becomes their home when it is presumed or otherwise presented that the vehicle is their dwelling, and there are particular "homesteading" laws that protect the homeowner from unlawful seizures of their homestead/property. Seattle was sued and actually lost a case and had to return a man's truck and reasonable costs because he was living in it a few years prior. It was a fascinating case to me, because it has so many implications for how they can enforce parking restrictions! I completely agree, I certainly hope for the best for everyone, especially those struggling with homelessness, addiction, mental health and other disabilities. To be able to have vehicles like these in a city is certainly such a blessing for many folks, and I hoped maybe having some ground rules would be helpful. 😂 In the past, I've told my coworkers that I live "in an RV" and many of the scenes are how they pictured my lifestyle! It was unfortunate, because the vast majority of us do not live in these conditions or treat the areas we live like this. I've since started sharing that we "live tiny", as that's much more acceptable and seemingly intentional to many folks, though a brief intro to this lifestyle is something I'm always working on!

I have seen some people living in vans or campers by the river ,in a small Oregon town, who don't really bother anyone, but the garbage they leave behind is ridiculous. Office chairs, crutches, bike frames and tires, clothes, and couch cushions. So now the town has begun clearing campers away from there. they could have had free camping in a pleasant area if they just wouldn't have left so much garbage.

I’ve wanted to travel in a van for 30 years. It wasn’t until now that everything aligned, making it possible. Of course, now it’s a whole popular trend, lumber is expensive, blah, blah, blah, and... everything you said. The growing numbers include more people acting badly and giving everyone a bad name. I’m so afraid that by the time I get out there, I won’t be able to find anywhere to go.

This is my 3rd year in Quartzsite after retiring as a software engineer. I built a cargo trailer/camper and really like it. Unlike Seattle, Quartzsite has rules at the LTVA and you get one warning. Next comes the tow truck and police. Lots of people living in tents or their cars here. Some people own an RV that doesn't run and is pretty much junk. They pay to have it towed to a spot here for the season then back into a storage lot until next season. That was new to me! The town of Quartzsite pretty much bends over backwards for us snow birds. They make all their money from Sep 15th to Apr 15th then shut down. It's $180 for the season and that includes those giant dumpsters and fresh water. This place is HUGE. During the RV show the town of 3,000 swells to over 1,000,000 and even then there is room for another 2,000,000. Walmart is about 35 miles away unless you want to pay $35 for a small steak or $29 for a medium pizza!

@@LisaBeatsCancer Well, it's not a tourist destination like the Grand Canyon. It's the desert. Not the type you're thinking. Scrub bushes, small trees and not sand but hard packed dirt. Real hard. From Sep to Mar it's real nice. 65 day and sometimes down to 32 at night. Like I said above. A place to camp for $180 from Sept 15 to Apr 15. You can stay longer but 120 is hard to take.

An excellent video with many good points, unfortunately, the people who would benefit the most from your advice are exactly the ones who pay not attention to it because it's all about them, their freedom, and nobody can tell them what to do. It all boils down to respect, which is too often demanded but not given, and common sense, which is not common. Too many "stealth" campers are a joke and nowheres near as stealthy as they think they are.

Shanty towns on wheels. The levels of poverty in America are shocking.
@CozyLivingMachine
@CozyLivingMachine 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. There are many who choose this and plenty that don't. What I find shameful is when cities refuse to 1. enforce existing laws and 2. refuse to explore low-cost options to give folks a place to go to get out of the front of stores, peoples' houses, parks and instead allow these folks to regain some dignity. I know this is a very complex topic, and there are no right or wrong answers, it seems obvious what cities and policies are allowing this behavior to thrive, and which do not. Even worse, however, is that the folks that are on disability or welfare could never afford a home to live in Seattle, where this is, but in the midwest, could reasonably afford a mortgage, or at least an apartment. I wish this was just an American issue, but we saw this in Vancouver, BC when we visited, almost identical to this (though they did steal our bikes there and smash our truck windows, separate incidents on the same day) and that has fortunately never happened to us in Seattle! 😬

Aside from all of the very handy tips you offer here the simple fact is that people who live a "normal" life have this attitude that you are somehow "cheating the system" or "getting something for nothing". Nothing makes the average person so furious as to think that somebody else is getting some benefit that they themselves are not getting. Yes there are RV bums and RV dwellers that give others a black eye but the truth is that even if every RV dweller in existent behaved in an absolutely perfect manner there would be somebody out there that was pissed about people being able to have a happy life in an RV. The same problem happens with liveaboard boating. People who pay millions of dollars for waterfront property just absolutely can't stand that somebody can buy a sailboat for less than 6 figures and anchor out and get the same amazing waterfront living that they paid a small fortune for. People in our society are way too damn worried about what other people have or don't have and are paranoid as Hell that other people are trying to take what they have or are getting something at their expense. It's pretty revolting to be honest.
@CozyLivingMachine
@CozyLivingMachine 2 жыл бұрын
Isn’t that crazy?! We’ve noticed that as well. Those same people tend to care far too much about how much something costs and assess the value of things based upon that number. Those folks seem so terribly disconnected from truth, though they just cannot override their programming. It’s a shame.

And that enlies the problem in Seattle. The city won’t take responsibility for them, nor will the owners (who sometimes are genuinely down on their luck, but we’re talking months or longer of this) and then the tow agencies won’t store them because of biohazards and never getting paid for them. They’re sometimes not worth scrapping, other times they aren’t safe because of chemicals within (meth labs). It’s a terrible thing. The city of Seattle is long mismanaged, it’s very, very sad to me.

Wow..Is that area in the video Seattle? I always wanted to visit there as I'm way down here in Tampa,Fl soon to be in AZ as I bought land there as a homebase for when I travel but darn, Seattle looks HORRIBLE!! All those trashy RV's on the side of the road!! Holy COW! We can't do that here!! They would tow you lickity split!!! Those rigs don't look like travelers but homeless that live on the street not just nomads passing through..It's those people in beat up RV's NOT nomads that are causing neighbors to be angy..heck I would be angry too if some beat up meth lab parked anywhere near my house!!! I can see a van perhaps getting away in a neighborhood street but not some beastly beat up Cousin Eddie camper!! I had plans to park in a can in a motel/hotel parking lot at night..after say 11pm and leave by 7am as that night shift is the least staffed and they don't usually patrol the parking lot..Now I mean like a Days Inn or other middle chain not a Hlton or Four Seasons!! They have security and often pay to park in cities but in suburban areas a motel wont even know you are parked nor if you are low on food you could take advantage of the guest continental breakfast too!! Yes, it's for guests but usually they don't ever check..(I worked in hotels for many years from Hilton to Rennaissance Hotels to even the low end Days Inn..I know how they all work!! Park there!! It's usually safe from staff trouble but not always theft of car...Motels are famous for having cars stolen!! I even witnessed it once at a Days Inn in Tampa FL circa 1994..I saw the guy stealing a Caprice Classic or as some groups like to refer to them as a Box Chevy..this guy was grinning ear to ear and all I could see was those white teeth in the cold dark night!! Justice was later served! He tried to steal a Cadillac the next week and the owner came out shot him dead behind the wheel!!! (here in FL we LOVE our guns and don't tolerate crime like the loosy goosey PNW haha) Safe travels
