Hi my name is Emi. My van life story starts in September 2018. After a long-term relationship that I was trying for more than a year to rebuild, I decided it was time to end this toxic relationship one for all. This is where I decided to move away from this man that I was still in love with. I put all my owning inside my SUV (GMC Jimmy) and moved six hours from where I was living. I didn’t know where I will sleep, didn’t know where I will work but I knew I needed to make a drastic move. At that time, I told myself I will only sleep in my car for a month while looking for a place to rent. What I didn’t know is that one month became another month and another month. In the end, I end up sleeping in my car for a full year. Even if people will consider this the lowers time of my life, this experience was the best thing I couldn’t have done with my life. I took that year to focus on myself, decide what I wanted, and most importantly what I didn’t want. That year made me also realize that for so long, I was chasing the wrong dreams. I was chasing what society wanted me to be: to have a big house, a steady job, kids, get married… None of those dreams was making me happy. In September 2019, while I was actively looking for a van, I received a phone call that someone had found my cat (Kelly). After, trying for hours with no success to communicate with my ex-boyfriend (who was taking care of her), I decided to drive the six hours to go pick her up. Without going into too much detail, it turns out he wasn’t able to take care of her anymore. So I brought her in a cat kennel for a couple of days until I found a van we both could live in. I put all the saving that I had accumulated while living in my car and bought my van (a 2011 Ford Econoline that I end up adding a hightop) In the beginning, It wasn’t so glamour. My cat and I were sleeping on a mattress on the floor of the van. We both had to adjust. Now, my cat loves this lifestyle as much as I do; she looks at the window while I’m driving and she loves exploring new places. Since then, my cat Kelly and I are living full-time in my self convert van.

Parked at many WalMarts. I always asked the parking lot workers where to park. I always bought as many supplies and groceries there. as I could. And always followed the few simple rules they had. Never had a problem, and still appreciate the courtesy WalMart extends to the RV community.

I work at Walmart and I can tell you I've seen abandoned cars that look inoperable in the parking lot. Several months can go by with the car untouched and unmoved. Right now there's currently an old gentleman in a vintage 80's van/camper in the parking lot. He's been there for a almost a year. LOL. Sometimes I wonder "Why am I paying rent again"? :)

I’m a private fleet Walmart Driver, and it’s nice to see our large lots allow some people a nights worth of safety and security. I don’t judge, because I’ve been there. Word of advice, stick to the front lots, and away from marked truck routes throughout the parking lot. Makes it much easier for large truck drivers to get in and out of tight areas. And don’t park overnight near the docks, rear of a store, or curbs/areas with painted red lines. Be safe out there! ✌️❤️

I'm a server and a bartender so I can make money anywhere I go! I grew up with 6 boys in the woods so I have no problem holding my own if I have to. It's a positive in more than one way that Walmart allows this . Not only does it give everyone a sense of community it gives people staying there a sense of security and home . Keeps you all together in a safe environment. Cops probably appreciate them allowing this as well. Good for Walmart , the Easter Bunny and the town of Squamish in general. Visit there often and the entire area gives off a welcoming vibe .

This is the Squamish Walmart? I live in Williams Lake and ours looks similar, with a log arch over the entrance! I love that our Walmart in town allows and encourages RV'ers to stay overnight when they need to. I used to work there and the manager said that he has no problem with people staying there overnight as they add a measure of safety to the store as well. The GY stockers know that when the RV"ers are parked overnight, their vehicles are safer and less likely to be broken into. :)

I parked for one month at the Walmart in Mill Creek, WA. No one harassed me, although I was always afraid of that happening. However, a guy stuffed a $20 bill through a side window! He said as he walked away “Been there, done that.” This was about 10 years ago, until I got some money. I was not in a van , but rather a 20-year-old Saab. I had a golden retriever who was not happy with this living arrangement. But I was grateful for their polite acceptance. One morning I got out of my Saab and it had snowed during the night and accumulated snow on the roof slid down into the back of my dress all the way down. I said to myself “I’m so out of here,” and the next day I drove down to Palm Springs with my golden (I think it was the end of the month and I got my social security/disability money.). I could afford to camp in a reasonable RV campground. Life stayed somewhat difficult but I didn’t have to sleep in parking lots. I got on a waiting list for a nice studio in a low-income apartment . I will be forever grateful for the “hospitality” of Walmart.” The story is much more complicated. Maybe I should consider writing an essay about my experience. And the resources I found along the way.

Depends on the Walmart. Some in Georgia harass people sleeping in the parking lot in vehicles and won't let people enter to use the restroom at night claiming the restrooms are being cleaned. I'm aspiring to this lifestyle. Blessings to you and Kelly, Emmie. You and Chrome are a sweet couple! My partner is a good man who likes adventures too. I truly aspire to live out the Vanlife in the Midwest and see a lot of neat cities and towns and parks and Walmart and truck stop parking lots, too. God bless you, lady! I searched what's it like living in a van where I found your channel! I am also in a toxic relationship so decided to buy an econoline van. I used to work at Walmart so I know the parkinglots are usually safe. I have had to leave in a hurry when toxic is acting out so I have stayed in WM parkinglot over night, leaving to a park during the day and returning as a practise lol. I drove across the USA once and slept in Loves truck stop travel centers and rest stops. I subscribed, nice video, thank you.🌹

I have a minivan and I’ve been sleeping in it for going on three months. Yesterday I got the scare of my life I’ve been sleeping in the mall parking lot in beside it is a Walmart well at night time I’m the only one around and a van pulled up behind me in a different space and I felt this uneasy feeling and I kept watching and then I finally fell asleep about 3:15 in the morning I woke up an hour later I looked out where he was and he was gone I had this relief did I looked at the other window and he was parked right beside me. I was so scared I went into the Walmart parking lot where I felt safe and I was able to go to sleep. So from here on out I’m gonna be sleeping at Walmarts and Cracker Barrel’s and occasionally a camp spot

Yeah, I used to sleep in my minivan. Once at a grocery store (there was no walmart available) and this guy pulled in right next to me. It really creeped me out because there was only like 2 or 3 cars in the whole lot, so why would someone pull right next to you? Well, it made me feel so uncomfortable, I moved to the other side of the lot. Went to sleep...woke up a couple of hours later to find this dude had pulled on over to where I was and again parked directly beside me! In a whole empty lot! It really scared me then, so I hopped into the driver's seat and drove off! That and one other incident taught me (especially if you're a woman), you'd darned well better have some type of minivan or van where you can hop from the back seat to the front of the vehicle to drive away WITHOUT getting out of your car!!!! God bless you, please watch your back if you're still doing this.

When I was still trucking OTR I’d park my big truck and trailer at Walmart, Home Depot or Lowe’s, etc…and, usually didn’t have any problems until just before I retired…more and more of these stores are clamping down on big truck parking. But, now that I’m retired and about to go full time RVing will be totally different for me though. New learnings! Common sense goes a long way when it comes to parking for the night. I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen RVers literally ‘camped out’ at Walmart with their lawn chairs, mat, and, awning extended…not to mention spending days on end there…really? I just couldn’t be like that! Great video as always, Emi! Stay safe! ~Jim~
