TTGVP Presents...
The last latex sprayer on the CP before reaching Port sits East of Notch Hill on the Shuswap Sub. Watch as it does what it does best to this WB CP Coal train.
The latex creates a coat over the coal and keep the dust down while it travels to the port.

Changed ties under there a few years back..... Quite the mess, even with the pads covering the ties.

It sprays a mix of water and a small film of polymer to keep the coal dust from blowing out and help keep the quality of the coal during shipping. I don't know about you, but Southern Pacific used to have sprayers like that on routes like the Tehcachappi and what not.

That's a pretty neat device. I have to wonder about how costly all that latex would be over the long run, though. Nice video!

@PhantomDark21 Its actually a polymer foam sprayer not laytex. it keeps the coal dust down while it travels to port and as for your question to those 2 engines: they need to be in the middle so that they are not too far from the front end so that the tran can actually get up the 2.2% grade with al that loaded coal weighing hundreds of thousands of tons. Notch Hill is a beast lol It takes one of these trains close to an hour or less to get up through here

@RailFanJon As far as I know majority of US railway company have most of there DPU engine as its last engine. And CN & CP is the only company I seen with many DPU engine in midways between its load. But mention to the gradient of 2.2% I think in the US there is this location call the Cajon Pass which have the same gradient as Notch Hill as you mention, which BNSF and UP coal freight doesnt use DPU in the mid-section of there loads, instead they have there DPU engine as its last pusher.

@Skiier1000 Its actually not latex man its a polymer binding coal agent and it is used for dust contorl while it travels to the port in vancuover

Thats totally amazing, not only the sprayer but the size of that train. I guess if the sprayer got it wrong getting latex out of those radiator grills on top of the loco could be fun as well. Do they just roll up the latex at the other end or does it just get crushed with the coal. Thanks so much. Marty

That is nice. I've never seen something like that before. I wonder how it recognizes if its a car or engine? I see the infrared thingy off to the side.

yes, it's soul purpose is to keep the coal dust down, with the housing boom in BC, there have been a number of new homes built so close to the tracks that a number of people complain of the coal dust, NOW, I could put up with a little coal dust to be right next to tracks !!!! SaWeet

Yes why latex? Here in New Zealand we just let the rain do that job, it rains so often over at the coal mines it's almost that reliable! Surely it's quite expensive to use latex though? Is it due to some environmental regulation that forces CP to spray the latex?
