I don't know why or how, but whenever someone introduces these kinds of questions to me (especially in an exam setting), my verbal intelligence regresses to that of a 2 year old. I have yet to receive my results and saying that I'm anxious would be a massive understatement. Fingers crossed!

@branislavjeremic49046 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree! I want to start crying every time a try to practice my verbal answers. I think of myself as a more-less intelligent person, who can at least create and verbally express a coherent thought on any topic. But those are not questions, those are...I don't even know how to call them...philosophical questions, but not even that. Philosophy is way stricter than this!

Both candidates are fluent in that they are comfortable discussing any topic andboth have a broad vocabulary to draw upon when in that situation. For a C2 level I expect a higher level than they display here. In particular there are a couple of elementary mistakes you should not make at the hightest level (in any language). The girl uses "we shared a lot of good experience". That has to be plural. And she repeats that mistake despite it being printed correctly on the prompt card. The girl uses simple English more akin to c1 level - the use of "very important" being a good example. She needs to work on her pronuncation of /v/ This is also part of the hightest level. The guy's English is at a slightly higher level but again also fairly simple. He also commits some elementary errors that are forgivable at c1 level perhaps, but not c2: "proud over" "shared accomplishes". At c2 level I expect more idioms and more appropriate vocabulary to the topic under discussion, for example they could have used "nurture friendship", "familiarity breeds contempt" "superficial friendships" "through thick and thin" "strengths and weaknesses" "set up company"

You're absolutely right.
@Noelito407 ай бұрын
Pity we don't have the examiners' feedback, because I too thought their language and delivery was a bit flat (C1-ish!). That said, maybe we are being overly critical, and less is expected of a C2 candidate than what we would think!?)

idioms and phrases, man, idioms and phrases.... that's one of the reasons why I hate Cambridge exams... well, the guy seems to be even more fluent and accurate with connected speech and stuff, however, there isn't much idiom use on both sides, which automatically fails them both. all these questions make up the themes from CPE preparation books, say destination, objective so on and so forth. If you don't get hold of one on your own or sign up for a language academy and pay for intensive courses (through the nose), you'll be completely in the dark, utterly clueless about the fact that this is a mafia system, let alone the fact that you have to pay about 200euros for the exam as well.... for ex, some of the expected idioms in use for that friendship topic is "two peas in a pod, a shoulder to cry on, close-knit, stands by ...... through thick and thin" while she was talking about her close life-long friends in the case of short-term friendships: "hit it off, get on famously, (studying abroad) builds bridges" etc. and the crazy part is some of these idioms are a bit out-of-use, and may not even be heard in a native speaker's discourse, but that's one of the way they can actually differentiate C2 candidates from C1 ones. did all the courses and took in all these weird lexemes? you're grand. congrats on your CPE certificate! don't have much to say about grammar though, ofc, they expect a more error-free discourse from you, deprived of silly ones pulled off by C1 speakers

Well, English for one. I probably aced the CPE papers (took them 4 days ago), I'll get my results next month but I'm pretty sure it's an A, or a B at worst. Also, I speak Dutch better than a native speaker, and I'm not even Dutch. My German is at C1 (which admittedly is not at the level of CPE, but close). So I have all the rights to talk. Nincompoop.

@Anonymous-bm8sv4 жыл бұрын
You forget the fact that speaking is a different skill from writing and reading for example. You don't have much time to rephrase your thoughts. I do agree that this is also part of your preparation. You do have to memorize certain linking expressions before you enter such a speaking exam so you'll able to vary in use of English and steer the conversation into different directions as well.
