I’ve been going back and forth on what Sage 5 I should pick up next - REX 121 or SPY27. I currently have an S30V LW with linen micarta scales from ripp’s garage tech that I absolutely love. Sharpening isn’t an issue for me, I enjoy doing it and diamond will sharpen anything. I’ve had bad luck with Maxamet & REX 45 in that I’ve managed to chip and stain both steels. Neither was the fault of the steel, knocking a knife off a workbench on stone flooring isn’t going to make any knife happy and I tend to eat a lot of acidic fruits. This review is making me want to roll the dice again and see if I can break my streak of bad luck. But I also REALLY love SPY27. My Native 5 LW & Manix 2 LW have performed flawlessly. I really can’t get over how well SPY27 responds to a strop and 1 micron diamond paste. This is such a hard decision.

Had to really go after it as the factory grind was horrible. set it up with 13 degrees per side. It is so sharp that i accidentally barely touched the knive with my finger when doing the sharpening and it cut me pretty bad. It was the original BBB in the Manix. A lot of the "hard to sharpen" feedback I've heard, from people who I actually trust to know what they're doing, is that the edge tends to microchip easily when sharpening at low grit. A lot of people will have the instinct to finish on 300 or so with a high carbide steel and have been disappointed with the results. I've also heard reports of even diamond abrasives "skating," but I wonder if that isn't due to worn plates or load-up on resin-bonded stones and such. Rex 121, PM60, CPM 15V, Maxamet and other high-alloy steels, real monsters in terms of wear resistance, are all easy to sharpen, you just need diamond plates, they don't even have to be expensive (more expensive ones last longer and are more homogeneous in the grit). So use diamond plates or CBN plates and a strop with diamond paste. I use diamond plates from Atoma (I also have Naniwa Diamond Pro stones) and diamond paste from Stroppy Stuff. If you want, you can also use a hard ceramic whetstone for honing (not sharpening), I use my Shapton Pro 5000 ceramic stone, it is very hard, feels like the blade is gliding over glass, but it does its job.

I also discovered it absolutely will not take the usual 14.5-15° edge I put on everything (from 8cr13mov to Maxamet), it micro chips while sharpening. I was finally able able to get a decent chip free edge by going to 16.5°. If audio on the sharpening vid is scuffed, why not mute audio trqck of that vid and edit in your post commentary? That way you can scavenge the material.

How toothy is your new edge? Like the kind of toothy-ness that K390 is known for. If 121 sharpens up like Maxamet (a steel that's difficult to get toothy), I'm not sure it's the steel for me. But if it behaves like K390, I'm so getting one of these.
@ericasedc3 күн бұрын
@@meanderinoranges it reminds me more of Maxamet in use/the results off the stone. It felt like S60V during sharpening- but otherwise I can closest relate it to Maxamet!
@achimgeist51853 күн бұрын
K390 toothy-ness!? Only if you sharpen K390 up to 600 grit, but K390 can easily hold a mirror-polished edge, that is precisely the strength of K390. That is also one of the main reasons why K390 is one of my absolute favorite steels.

Great review! I was waiting for a review of this from someone who *actually* uses their shit and understands the purpose of this combo rather than a table-top review that is only going to review the Sage platform. I’ve got a G10 version on the way from a trade, and I’m now less concerned about sharpening. Thanks and feel better soon!

if you try to sharpen rex121 on aluminum oxide and then proceed to say that it's the steels fault, I'm sorry your parents didn't teach you basic reading comprehension. This steel honestly seems incredible. It just does not get dull from normal folding knife use. I'll eventually get one, but it'll have to a couple of years down the line. Got other things I want to try first.

I think Spyderco is required by law that every time they release a knife with great steel, they first have to give it the ugliest scales color, then make you wait for other nice colors. I'm still waiting for them to finally release the Para 3 Salt Magnacut in full black.

This is why you dont understand the steel. It is a high tungsten knife. 10% tungsten. The vanadium is not the impressive bit. The whole knife isnt hard. Just the tungsten. The other super steels wont do that. They will dull. At 70 hrc the other non tungsten "super steels" are trash. There are no sharpening stones built bellow diamond for sharpening tungesten. The moh hardness is too high for aluminum oxide. This knife would be compared to a sandrin knife which is full tungsten. The sandrin might actually be hard to sharpen if any knife is since its all hard instead of 10% hard.
