Another tip for checking if your AIO pump is dead is that you put a load on your CPU then feel the temperature of both tubes an you should notice that one tube is hotter than the other which means the pump is in working order as the fluid is circulating the unit correctly. However If you feel that both tubes are getting equally as hot then there may be a pump problem. Thats what Ive used to determine dead AIOs in the past anyway.

Yeah man thats pretty balanced, however if you can get your hands on ryzen that would be better (how its looking like now however that will not be easy or maybe even possible). And yes definetly spend money on an SSD, also maybe change from 4 tb HDD to 2TB unless you really need the space straight away. The money you save can uppgrade you to a 1TB M.2 NVME instead and that will be a big difference. Then you have 3TB and can always buy another HDD down the line when you get the money.

About the warning when your pump failed. I've seen the option to turn on a pump failure warning inside the BIOS/UEFI when the board is equipped with a pump header. When the pump is not turning for whatever reason you'll either get a message on screen or a beep code (I've seen both). It's been a thing on ASUS, MSI and GIGABYTE but I'm not sure about the rest and I'm not sure if all the boards come with it.

One other thing, if it's an older system overheating and you're using a CPU fan, check the grills for dust and dirt. If there is too much dust inside of the fan grills, none of the air from the fan will make it down to actually cool the CPU.

I'm surprised you didn't talk about the fourth most common way CPUs can overheat: Because the user's a filthy animal who never cleans their PC. I ran into that problem about a month ago. I kept getting dangerously close to shutdown from overheating (i.e. breaking about 208F under load, but around 128F when idle) so I powered down to have a look. I had a handy tool to hook up 3/4-pin headers to a molex connector and from there to a power brick with a switch so I could test each fan individually without unmounting to verify it worked. Since obviously they were all working I decided that before I'd go tearing into the CPU I should perhaps look at the CPU fan and... that's when I saw it. A solid mat of dust completing covering the cooler just below my CPU fan. I hadn't cleaned it once since I built this case about 4 years ago. It took me a good half an hour of going at that with a vacuum, cotton swabs, canned air, and even paper towels to clean it out. I finished cleaning all the other fans and reassembled. It worked. I now average around 88F idle and maybe 116F under load. Lesson learned: dust is an EXCELLENT thermal insulator.

Just keep scanning your temps regularly, once a week, or once a month. If they allways ramp up you got an issue. I have my first AIO on my GPU, and this is very stressfull to wait when it goes boom. My plan is to upgrade the pump once a year maybe, still cheaper than replacing the actual GPU.

Why, when most of the decent quality thermal compounds include a spreader, is anyone still doing the glorp and squish method? Put the needed amount out, and spread it evenly over the cpu, then you know it's not going to have gaps or make a mess you'll be dealing with the next time you replace it (which you should once or twice a year). You miss the 4rd reason - Crappy PC Case!!! 2 days ago I've tested a PC with i5-3570 (non-K, just stock clock) and case Aqirys Bellatrix. Really nice looking small and cute PC case but it's terrable in fact :) The CPU reaches 105C during gaming and just turned off the PC. Then I move the same mobo+cpu+cooler in an other PC case and boom - max temp about 75C. OMG, 30 degrees difference just because of the case, this is insane.

Recently, my i7-4790 died. I was so sure it wasn't the cause since like you said when do CPUs ever die? I bought a new psu and motherboard and it still wasn't working. I have 4 sticks of 4GB RAM pretty unbelievable for all 4 to die at once. This made me doubt myself so much. I finally caved and bought a i5-4690. Switch it out, PC booted instantly. CPUs deaths are rare but not impossible. I really didn't want to accept that it died though :(

G'day Greg, 4:52 You mention having some way of knowing if your AIO Pump failed, Don't most BIOS have a CPU Fan Fail Alarm??? 🤔 maybe mine does because it is older, Unless I have a Pump Header I always plug the Pump into the CPUFan Header & then put the Fans on a Secondary Header, you need the Mobo Speaker for it to be Audible but doing it this way the PC will let you know if the AIO Pump fails

So today all of a sudden, my pc turned off and I didn't know what happened, but after I turned it back on and checked NZXT software I noticed that my CPU temp was about 95C. Until today everything was normal and no overheating ever happened. I have a R5 3600 and a NZXT AIO cooler. First thing I tried was removing the cooler, reapplying new fresh paste, giving the pc a proper clean (I always keep it clean anyway) and putting the AIO back on, but this didn't fix the issue. I've applied thermal paste and mounted coolers dozens of times so I know I can do it properly, also mounted multiple NZXT AIO coolers in the past years. The weird thing that is happening to me is that the PC is running at about 40C in bios and as soon as I turn windows on it jumps to about 90C in seconds. It could be the AIO but I can feel the liquid running through the tubes and the fan is working, so I can't see how it could actually be it. I can't keep my PC on more than about 1 min because of the safety shut down, but I won't even try it again to avoid permanent damage. So bios temp alright, but in 5-10 seconds it bursts from 40C to almost 100C (when loading windows), thermal paste applied properly, AIO mounted correctly, fan working, liquid flowing. What could it be? Also I run the same setup for more than an year now, and no progressive overheating happened. A few hours ago I could play 3 games at once, the next time I turn on the PC, it would only stay on for a few minutes at most. Can it still be the pump even if I can feel the liquid? What else could it be? Every other metrics looks perfect, Vcore voltage is good, every other hardware works within the parameters, all chassis fans are working... No ideas left...

Great vid as always Greg. “Fix or Flop” reminds me of Leo Laporte and “The Screensavers” from a very long time ago. You’ve got a “winner” with that segment. The move to RGB has led to manufacturers cheaping out on fan quality and prioritizing bling. I have some older non-rgb fans from yesteryear and they are outstanding in quality and performance compared to today’s mostly garbage fans. Not saying all fans are garbage today……….but if you got a great price…………more than likely poor quality. You’re better off buying higher priced fans. Sure……I like AIO’s also………but there needs to be a way to know the pump is gone. Also, the fluid tends to get “scummy” over time………..similar to that film that forms on stagnant water. That will also cause overheating issues. You should also push air through a rad rather then trying to pull air through the rad. In relation to PSU’s……….please……..please don’t use cables from another power supply. The pinouts are not always the same between PSU’s.

It was the cooling system, the pump failed and the display was saying 27 degrees so I thought everything was fine. Don't go by the pump display temp go by the BIOS temp and everything will be fine. The guy at the shop couldn't figure it out but guess what? after watching vids and reading you can troubleshoot your own rig too.

Weird thing my PC when running benchmarks and comparing with over 5k other people for the components I have. Scored above average… nothing wrong. But 1 time I was preloading game shaders for world war z and my PC shutoff. But it was after updating AMD GPU drivers lol. Never happened again. Maybe just bug with the new update. I’ve heard the last day AMD driver updates are having issues.

20 years ago I bought an athlon xp 1400 and improperly mounted the hsf. This is way before we had tjmax or any thermal detection at all and I turned it on just to see the magic smoke coming out from under the heatsink. So…I bought another one and then tried to mount the hsf…backwards. This was when they stopped putting heatspreaders on the chips for better cooling and I…crushed the edges of the die. Ever since then I’ve been extremely careful with heat sinks. Just pay attention because things can be screwy without realizing it very easily.

To this day I don't know what happened to my AIO, one day I took the PC to have a new SSD disk installed and when I brought it back it had overheating problems, I watched several videos about water cooling, and when I put my hand To feel the cables I felt the vibration, but even so the CPU overheated more and more, in the end I ended up changing to a fan, but I will never know if that AIO had its day or if the technician who installed the SSD messed up something.

So uh... what *else* can cause cpu overheating, because we've got a weird overheating issue right now and its not any of the usual suspects. Its not the thermal paste, fans are all working, pump is working. Airflow is good. Its not faulty temperature sensors on the motherboard because thats been replaced. Its not a faulty CPU because thats been replaced.
