Cherry Audio's CR-78 accurately recreates the punchy analog sounds and 34 onboard preset rhythms of the first true classic drum machine and takes it much further. We've done away with the complex beat programming, replaced it with a familiar X0X-style button-per-step interface, and added an easy-to-use song mode for pattern chaining. Unlike sample-based emulations, Cherry Audio's CR-78 uses modeled synthesis to recreate the classic tones of the original and makes a quantum leap forward by making these sounds fully editable. This sounds GREAT. And, I must say, with much the drum VST arms race seemingly pointed toward bigger and louder drums, this range of gentler sounds and textures is like a breath of fresh air. A rich space that seems untapped. Thinking ahead, if Cherry Audio is going to do more in the drum space, a Cherry Audio-quality Linn Drum would be magnificent. I have not been pleased with any Linn emulator I've tried and would love one that I could trust the way I do everything else with your name on it.

Thank you for your kind words and support! We were really excited to do the CR-78, because no one's really done it thus far (besides sample-based instruments). There are already some very nice 808 and 909 emulations out there, so not sure if we'd do them, but anything is possible, and we have a few other drum-machine kind of ideas... :)

The only thing missing from this is having the option to blend two user rhythms, that would be heaven. You could have a button in the top row and bottom row before the "cancel" button with a tiny arrow where you could select user presets. It would just be a new way to break free from the traditional rhythms we are used to. I think that was the fun of combining the rhythms of the OG CR-78

If a sampled virtual instrument works for you, that's good. This is modeled synthesis, though, which gives it the flexibility to sound as close to -- or as far away from -- the original hardware.

Check out our Sines synthesizer, which uses phase modulation and ratio dials to allow the sine wave oscillators to be configured in a modulator/carrier arrangement like four-op DX/FM-style synthesis.
